Dominions edition

Previous Pantokrator: >>140219380

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

Still at 4/10 teams. The schematics of the draft have been updated on the page.

If you're interested in the game, but are a friendless loner, you can always state your interest in the game on the thread so that others know you're interested in it to get in contact with you.

You can't spell slaughter without a way to counter Mass Regeneration, Army of Foo and similar turn 91 shenanigans.

Alas, dear Ulm.

And yes, those basically all did spam Magma Eruption. No, it wasn't very watchable.

>>
>>140788358
>>140789759
How did Ulm not have his own army of lead and other such spells by turn 91?

He has 120 mages, so research shouldn't be the problem, and his army should have won by sheer weight of numbers (and also not being mostly chaff) if it had similar buffs.
>>
>>140790372
I've seen worse.
>>
>>140790134
No clue. It was behind all of Jotun's other troops most of the battle, and disappeared at some point. I would assume it flew forward into melee and got itself killed but I couldn't find it anywhere.

>>140790424
I had Army of Lead/Will of the Fates, but Jotunheim had those and Mass Regen/Wind of Death/Curse of Stones/Fog Warriors/etc etc. Basically all the end-game spells. I didn't have much path diversity outside of my pretender because I am bad at this and my research wasn't that great because for most of the game my mages were driving off Arco/Agartha.

Seems to happen when you hit level 9 in a school. At a guess, the RP per turn is added, then on the next turn it corrects itself and removes the extra which was wasted from the graph.
>>
>>140791359
Yeah, same thing happened to me.

Literally couldn't watch the battle that opened with me walking into Master Enslave x2 in the first round. Mass regened, army of fooed, reliefed, fog warriors, demon knights do not kill each other very fucking fast at all.

Went to auto-route. I technically lost.

You are right, gloves is 2handed and 4 atts, swiftness is 1h and 2 atts. 2 gloves and 1 sword maybe?

The VGL6 qualifiers will be May 27th-29th, but we won't be participating in those. The draw will be after the qualifiers are over. The league proper will begin June 3rd.

Times you learned something new about Dominions mechanics.
>Mage sitting comfortably in the capital on a stack of 20 researchers cast blessing of Thetis
>Don't bother scripting her because lazy
>Army swarms Atlantis and lays siege to their forts
>RANDOM fucking Abysian assassin kills my Enchantment mage on the first try out of 20 possible people it could attack
>Entire army on that border drowns minus the commanders holding wavebreakers
>mfw
>>
>>140830467
Scripting doesn't work in assassinations
>>
>>140830467
Victims don't follow their scripting in assassination attempts anyway. Next time give your important mages a bottle of water or something.
>>
>>140830467
why the fuck would you bring your enchantment mage with you?

>>140830661
Oh well that makes me feel better, should have at least maybe thrown some body guards on he
>>140830684
I didn't my war on the other border with Abysia prompted them to send an assassin to my capital. It was the first attempt, the odds of them actually hitting her and not one of my bajillion enaries or soothsayers researching were like 1 in 25.

Another learning mechanics the hard way story here
>Figure out summon mechanic and decide to tap into huge pile of death gems
>Field massive wight army and decide to support it with some of my strongest mages
>Send it to attack Ulm and have it roll over their first few provinces
>Have entire mage cadre being guarded by wights
>Winter comes
>See combat report and and notice only my mages dying and no one else against an army of just 40 mercs
>Didn't realize cold could damage your own troops
>MFW checking the combat report
>>
>>140833969
You noticed your mistakes and learned from it
Good padawan, you are on track
>>
>>140833969
It's even more fun with Water Elementals.

They don't deal cold damage, but during winter they turn into Ice Elementals which do. I lost an entire army because of this once, because I equipped all mages and commanders with bottles of living water.

While the Melquarts are pretty strong and everything they still are so fucking expensive and I can't seem to get enough of them out since they are slow to recruit.
Also researching is so hard because everything is expensive in upkeep.
Should I just use a massive bless and beef up my melqs and giants in general even more to make the viable?
>>

>I find the music quaint.
It's annoying. At least make it so it doesn't autoplay, so the user can choose whether they want it or not.

>Whats the problem with iframes? They seem so versatile.
Lots of things. Most notably they tend to fuck with accessibility browsers, they make saving/printing pages a pain, they trip up search engine indexing, and they make it extremely annoying to bookmark pages.

There's literally nothing you can do with frames that you can't do with plain old HTML, with maybe some SSI or a bit of PHP if you want to be fancy. Especially if your only goal is to play some annoying music, there's literally no excuse to use frames.

step one is to stop using Raphael warriors if you were wasting time with that. I usually go very heavy scales and tailor my pretender to summon grigori if I survive that long. You can also go N9 for jewish giants or A4 to make your A2 amnis much more useful in combat

I suppose it serves its niche. Much like Flatus ensures no other map has to take the title 'least balanced', unit mod probably does the same for mods.

While things like domgmod/summod annoy me, at least they attempt (and arguably succeed) and increasing balance, instead of going lawl lets buff MA Ermor.

Awake expanders can't really handle mages to begin with.
>>
>>140859120
No, though I was the second highest by a sliver. 240 pearls is worlds more than I had available, and apparently worlds more than anyone else did either.

Only people who donated nothing are C'tis and Mictlan (and obviously R'yleh, but duh). In Mictlan's case, he's fighting the squids in the water, so he's doing his part. Not sure about C'tis . . .

Glad to see I'm sort of maintaining parity in research and gem income (I'd even be 2nd behind you if not for these gemgen globals), judging by the fact you have Lemuria's graphs I'm assuming this is from a site, and you didn't go through the trouble to askashic record literally everyone.
>>
>>140859451

>>
>>140857298
Mods have to buff Ermor. It's the law.

The spell is currently for MA Ermor and Lemuria and Ench8, 5D3S and 75 gems. I could make it Ench9, 5D5S and 100 gems. Or I could just make it Lemuria only like I originally planned.

>>140860185
Why not make it D5A3, which is harder for ermor to get by a lot, and closer to the underlying spell in path requirements.

Also, possibly Evo 9, which is (arguably) less helpful to ermor than ench 9, and is also in the same school as wailing winds.

(I'm going through national spells in mod inspector and taking notes right now).
>>
>>140861409
Be careful, the inspector doesn't like #copyspell and reports elements from the original spells that were overwritten. Check the mod commands to see the actual values.

Interesting ideas about the Global, like I said it was mainly included as a way for Lemuria to actually win fights and Ermor just got it as a byproduct. I could make the Ermor version a bitch to cast and the Lemuria version easier due to their stronger connection to disembodied souls. Plus them being shit and all.

I dunno man. I'd rather our war not be decided by lame bugs :(
>>
>>140869703
Oh, interesting. In the Turn Order section of the manual, Preaching happens very early in the turn, before any battles, but Dominion Spread (presumably other checks?) happen near the end. Sounds like that might've caused it.
>>
Hay guysss, new turn!
>>
>>140869703
the tart went . . . places. It was weird.

As for the immortal, the place had 6 candles. If it was 1 candle, yeah, I'd buy that for sure. Seems really unlikely though.
>>
Gonna go look the old turn up for science, just to save me some time, the reanimated kings cannot preach, correct? They can only reanimate?
>>
So the province had 4 candles the prior turn, which means H1s could preach it down. That would be what killed my immortal then. Guess I'll need to be more careful with my immortals then :(

As for the Tart, he's fine, he just somehow set his fly boots to turbo. He'll come back . . .eventually. (and no, I don't understand how that happened either).

Are you sure about that?

6. Preach Priests preach the word of their god, and dominion is adjusted accordingly
22. Other movement All other movement, including Break Siege, takes place.
23. Resolve battles All battle resolution from movement happens here.
38. Dominion spread All dominion spread (for whatever reason) is conducted now.

The only battles that happen after Dominion Spread are "leftover battles caused by previous events" whatever that exactly means.

Ulm, sweetie.

If you wanted to not look bad, maybe don't post a chart showing you behind in research compared to not just Pythium but also Man, while playing as LA Ulm, the supreme research nation, and having the largest nation with the most income.
>>
>>140893714
>tfw not toppest nation
>>
>>140891746
Check you can get at least 12 provinces in year 1 with the nation/pretender you're joining with. Apart from that, you should be fine.
>>
>>140893884
I'm going to note that you should be aiming for 12+ without an awake pretender. An awake pretender is for when you want to get past that, it's not a crutch to get to a mediocre expansion.
>>
>>140893884
Honestly, make that fifteen. Expanding one province/turn for all of year one is horribly, horribly slow. And while an experienced player might be able to use overwhelming late game to make up for that, I don't think a new player can.
>>
>>140893884
Also, about the races. Which one can you advice for the 1st time MP?
>>
>>140894394
The one you like best.
>>
>>140894394
There's a lot of good ones, depending on era and playstyle. Tell us a bit about what you enjoy doing so we can narrow it down for you?
>>
>>140893714
This just in

Shots fired.
>>
>>140894214
Yeah, with awake I'd estimate you should be aiming for at least 20. You could get nearly 12 provinces in a year with your awake expander on his own.

>>140894319
New players are also going to be worse at expansion though. Some of the nations with poor expansion can have trouble doing better than 12 provinces without an awake expander, though a new player probably shouldn't play them.

>>140894394
Hard to say. There's some races which are bad for first time players which we can warn you away from, but most will be fine. Tell us what nations look interesting to you and we can point out any which would be a bad choice.
>>
>>140895736
Yeah, the whole "nations with poor expansion thing" is the reason I'm advocating 15 desu. Bogarus, f'instance, is not a weak nation, but it's not something a new player ought to play. They won't make it to the late game, and they won't be able to leverage their magic well enough to overcome the enemy even if they do.
>>
>>140896430
Its one of the reasons EA/MA Pan gets recced to newbies so often. Between amazing W9 expansion, fantastic troops, and recoup, they're very forgiving.
>>
>>140894532
In the Early Era i liked C'This and Sauromatia, but i havent played other era's that much.

Ok, what nations should i NOT play as a newbie?
>>
>>140896931
Sauromatia is a fine nation. C'tis is a bit on the weak side. Nations you for sure oughtn't play I'd say include:

EA: Marverni, Abysia, Helheim, Kailasa, Ur, R'lyeh, Atlantis.
MA: Man, Eriu, Marignon, Mictlan, Shinuyama.
LA: Pythium.

I'd also include the popkill nations Therodos, MA Ermor, Asphodel and LA R'lyeh, just because they're a bit complicated to get the hang of.

>>
>>140897654
I take offense at such claims of us being a *bad* nation

We're a fucking horrible nation, unless Midgard derps around with a partial N bless, LA Atlantis forgets his magic weapons *somehow* and Caelum fucks off instead of even trying to fight.
>>
>>140897643
Helheim is fucking atrocious. Sure, Valkyries are sweet as heck, and my inner seithkona wishes they were good, but Helheim as a whole is just not really something you can win with. They run out of gold and research, and their mages just don't do enough.

>>140897672
Frequency: EA > MA > LA
Best: LA > MA > EA

>>140897692
I try to forget they exist.
>>
>>140897672
It honestly depends on what people are in the mood for, but in my experience EA>LA>MA.
>>
>>140897715
Shit, I didn't mean to write Atlantis, I meant to write Pelagia, because EA Pelagia cannot onto land.

I disagree with EA Machaka, though they are definitely on the weak / hard to play side, but you're right that I forgot MA Machaka. That nation just flat out shouldn't exist.

As you can see, New Person, nobody has a clue what they're doing. You'll fit in fine.
>>
>>140897672
Frequency EA > MA > LA
Best EA > LA > MA

>>140897643
Helheim is hard for the same reason Abysia is hard, they lack good recruits out of capital, and just kind of loose steam too much. Good on small maps with few (5-7) players though.
>>
>>140897987
EA Machaka requires a good understanding of magic to survive, because your troops are barely better than monkeys.

They do have good magic though, the Bouda basically has fucking Dai Oni pathing. On that note, I'd add Yomi. Good nation, but you really need to understand how to SC well to make use of it.
>>
>>140897351
Is Yomi a decent enough nation?
>>
>>140897987
Yeah, I see it. It's rather funny and I like it.

>>
>>140897351
If Eriu is on that list, a bunch of other MA nations deserve to be there as well

Like most of the UW ones, Xibalba, T'ien Chi, and Bandar Log.
>>
>>140898335
The best way I can describe Yomi is like this:

They have some of the most crippling weaknesses of any nation. Order disempowered units, an effective -14% cap income from lost admin bonus on a turmoil nation making you perpetually poor early, and generally underwhelming recruit units due to cost.

On the other hand they get Shikome on a 1 to 1 death gem basis, and Shikome are fantastic. They also get Dai Oni, who are one the best recruitable battle casters and the BEST recruitable SC in the game (soul vortex+phoenix pyre is vicious, and the auto summon wolves typically eat the initial round of anti-SC spells.
>>
>>140898226
Mhmm. They're in the "I'd urge you to maybe reconsider" category, but not in the "they're flat out bad, don't play them unless you want a challenge" category. Their troops aren't actually that atrocious; elephants make for super easy expansion, and if you're playing against someone of roughly equal skill, you can pretty easily roll over someone with flaming arrows before they get a counter (if they can get one at all), which then allows you to transition into skelespammers fucking everywhere.

Yomi's actually more of a nation to avoid than EA Machaka, I'd say. Yomi have absolutely nothing going for them aside from Dai Oni.

>>140898335
They're... on the weak side, and something of a one-trick demon overlord.

>>140898432
PBEM.

>>
Pretender gods. Should i delay their awakening in exchange for points?
>>
>>140898895
I mean, letting Hinnom recruit Grigori would be one way to make them good, I guess.

Thing with Dai Oni is the fully kitted, army soloing Dai Oni comes online MUCH earlier than Grigori do. If you don't know how to solo armies with Dai Oni, chances are you should be playing a different nation.

Don't underestimate Shikome though, those bitches make Yomi a solid *two* trick pony. Shikome have a tendency to blenderize everything.

>>140898860
I'd actually say Yomi is better than Machaka, but also harder to play. Maybe I'm still enjoying memories of watching 100s of enemy units die to a single guy though.
>>
>>140898742
>They also get Dai Oni, who are the BEST recruitable SC in the game
That's not saying much, since there's only a handful of nations with recruitable SC chassis (fomoria, niefel, yomi, EA atlantis, hinnom, probably a couple I forgot).

Out of those I'd put Fomorian Kings at least on par with Dai Oni, mainly because they have magic phase movement. In an actual fight Dai Oni will do better, but magic phase movement makes it much easier to get into a favorable fight with your SC.
>>
>>140899345
Depends on what you want to achieve!

If you're going for a big bless, for instance, you essentially have to make them imprisoned or at least dormant, especially if you want decent scales. There's even some nations that can justify just imprisoning something and going ALL the scales.

That said, awake pretenders are also very good, and I myself am particularly fond of them. I find that unless you truly need a good bless, the incredible economic advantage of getting like ten extra provinces in the first year is amazing.
>>
>>140899583
If you're a high roller you can stick an Winged Helmet on an A1 Dai Oni, and they can Cloud Trapeze in.

Sort of expensive though. Dai Oni do have the benefit of ALL being SCs though, whereas only roughly 1/3 of Jarls or Fomorian Kings can say the same (the others lack Soul Vortex).
>>
>>140899872
Depending on your bless, you can make a Jarl into an SC without soul vortex.
>>
>>140899583
Fomorian Kings don't get fucked by Air Eles though, unlike all other SCs who get trampled to death more often than not. Will give them that much.

Also Hangadrott > Basalt King for sure, and usually over Melquart unless fighting mindless. Soul Vortex too stronk.
>>
>>140899662
>>140899345
There's also the option of creating a pretender with a variety of paths, to boost your magical diversity, these typically use one off the small mage chassis and are usually taken awake or dormant to do site-searching.
>>
>>140899980
They'd be a really light SC.

Honestly I've found one needs massive amounts of reinvig gear (around 10-14 total from bless, e power, and gear is needed), Soul Vortex/Fire Shield (depending on if skelly spam is around) and Phoenix Pyre, plus the right gear types, to walk into mage supported armies and still win.

Even then its a toss up, and often relies on them not having whatever you didn't have room to script against.
>>
>>140900071
Before creating one of these (a rainbow pretender) however, run through this checklist:

Will you be in a position to benefit from the diversity? Would you be better off with a strong bless? Would you do better with ten more provinces?
>>
>>140899872
>Winged Helmet on an A1 Dai Oni
Helmets are expensive though, and Yomi doesn't have an easy way to get access to A4 for them.

>Dai Oni do have the benefit of ALL being SCs though, whereas only roughly 1/3 of Jarls or Fomorian Kings can say the same (the others lack Soul Vortex).
Just give the D2 ones a handful of death gems. 1 gem per fight is negligible compared to the equipment cost.

>>140900045
>Hangadrott > Basalt King for sure, and usually over Melquart unless fighting mindless. Soul Vortex too stronk.
Hangadrott has too few hp to act as a SC. One good hit will kill it.
>>
>>140898742
What makes Shikome that good? I don't really see it. They're sacred yes but wouldn't benefit too much from bless that's good for Dai Oni, and their stats make them look like revelers (a tad better stats, a tad worse weapons) that costs gems (revelers are cheaper even if we price the gems based on transmutation), mage turns and belong to a nation that can't buff them as much. As I see it, the big difference is them having magic weapons which I suppose is a big deal in endgame battles with Fog Warriors and such like, but I can't see how you'd field enough Shikome to truly make a difference in the game (while you can recruit revelers, a similar and more easily buffed unit, by the hundreds).

Granted, revelers are insane in their own right.
>>
>>140902290
If revelers were sacred, they would be OP as shit.

There's an asymmetry between availability of death gems and availability of pearls, given the capital income of nations like Ermor and Lemuria, and the fact that nobody will have had time to site-search at that point. Assuming an awake D9 from the popkill nation (and by the way, awake immortal spellcasters will likely be supreme), it'll be several turns before anyone can dispel it. Between gimped in order, being larger than the rest of troops in their army (larger than wolves so target large works), being demons and lacking magic phase movement dai oni are pretty mediocre starting with midgame.
Antidemon weapons specifically rip them apart.

Fomorian kings ith W random get quicken self and liquid body and make fantastic antithugs and competent SCs. They are the best fomorian kings to use as an SC in general because Soul vortex just needs a few extra gems and D3/A4 ones have some great magic to cast.

I don't really get when you'd want fomorian kings over druid thugs / armies. They can't beat armies with mage support and things that you're hitting that don't have mage support can be beaten for cheaper. The only thing I can think of is cloud trapezing anti thug stuff, but that's mostly tied to equipment which you'd understandably want to put on the best chassis you have, so IDK
>>
>>140911158
>They can't beat armies with mage support
Fomorian Kings can definitely beat armies with mage support, though it obviously depends on how much support and what type of mages.
>>
>>140911386
I guess I should have rephrased that as "armies with mage support can easily be made to kill Fomorian kings consistently," but of course it depends
>>
>>140912098
Scripting armies with anti-SC measures generally makes them pretty useless against other armies, so they can't just do it with all their armies.

Just drop kings on armies which aren't scripted for fighting SCs.
>>
>>140912331
Stellar Cascades and Leech Spam are used against both.
>>
Has anyone ever written a guide to positioning that goes beyond the expansion phase? I always find myself positioning well in the early game, and then as it goes into late, I just sorta put down a blob in front and then a slightly shootier blob a bit further back and then maybe some flying blobs.
>>
>>140912331
There are a lot of spells that casually kill SCs that the AI will spam if the king is in range, leech and astral spells being famous among them
>>
>>140903829
I'd like a dom4 mod that removed research and balanced the costs of magic around their path and gem requirement instead of so many spells in the game existing literally just as "use this because you don't have the token spell yet" like raise skeletons vs horde of skeletons or shadow bolt vs shadow blast.
>>
>>140912521
I'd like a proper statistic on correct positioning for tramplers. My elephants always seem to stop immediately in front of the enemy troops and then promptly get their shit kicked in.
>>
>>140912771
Look up how AP works and then look at the battle map. There is always a correct position, but it also always depends on where the enemy starts and how fast they move.
>>
>>140912479
>>140912583
Sitting your SC at the back for the first 5 turns of combat is likely to cause mages scripted with either of those spells to go offscript. S2 is probably going to spam paralyze (countered with MR, and being paralyzed isn't a massive issue to most SCs so long as their buffs have been cast), and B1 will create imps (which just wastes their blood slaves).

After 5 turns the enemy mages will be running at 100+ fatigue, and your SC will be facing sporadic spellcasting at best once he starts attacking.

It's also fairly likely that after 5 turns the enemy troops will have moved up and are now in melee with your SC. In that case, the entire fight occurs outside of the effective range of your enemy's mages.

There are spells which don't have these issues, and you can work around the issues with clever scripting (e.g. troops set to guard commander so the SC fights on your side of the field) but most of these things are a very bad idea in a fight against an enemy army.
>>
>>140829483

Not Cirno. Anyway, part of the reason I like LA is that it has greater diversity, particularly with the paths I enjoy. EA feels like everyone has Air and Earth, and the numbers back it up. On the other hand, LA has much more Astral, Death and Blood, which I find to be more interesting to play with.

Also, the human nations play very different from one another, unless you mean to suggest that you'd play Man or Pythium the same way you'd play T'ien Ch'i.

That only goes for the nations that have sacreds worth recruiting, same as any other age. If anything, LA is less prone to bless rushing strats than any other age.

>recruit xbows
Only like 5 nations in LA make heavy use of crossbows, and some of those (like Pan, for example) can't even rely on crossbows as their main unit.

>leverage your communion or blood based magic
You're a retard for even implying all communions are the same. If anything, LA has greater magic diversity than any other age, and communions help you leverage that diversity even further.

>rush anti crossbow strats
Unless you're up against someone like Agartha, there's no need at all to specifically rush for a crossbow counter.

>get more money then anyone else
>leverage huge economy might
As opposed to every other age where you never need any income and you can win wihout recruiting anything?

>>140924285
I agree with you about LA (I was the one he was quoting, after all), but...

>Only like 5 nations in LA make heavy use of crossbows.
>There's no need for a crossbow counter.
This is wrong. If you can find a cheap crossbow province to fort up early, you do so. It's stupid not to. A competent player -will- do it. On the other hand, a competent player will also have good research and will have some way of countering it, so it stops being a viable strategy before too long.

>>
>>140922664
The problem isn't that they're all the same, the problem is they're a lot less different than EA or MA.

The majority of nations in LA primarily use an armored human unit, supplemented by crossbows (indie if they don't have national ones).

Mages add variety to the nations, but EA and MA have interesting unit variety on top of that.

Of course there's interesting nations in LA and boring nations in EA/MA, but LA has a much higher proportion of them as many nonhuman nations get human troops and/or lose their nonhumans.

Well, there's Abysians (very offensively focused troops with heat auras), elves (glamour), pale ones (high HP, poor combat stats), all of which cease to exist completely in LA.

Pangaea goes from stealthy low-armor troops that do very well with buffs to basically humans with a slightly better statline in the transition from MA to LA as well.

Jotun Giants and Jew Giants get human frontline troops in LA, which they lacked before it.

Probably more, but I think what I've provided is a decent amount of evidence.

I wish there was more national magic in general, in all ages.

I mean some nations get a wealth of cool stuff, while others get nothing at all. Even worse, many of the nations that are most boding to begin with don't get any unique magic to make up for it, while nations that are already different/unique get national magic on top of it. I don't even care that some national magic is rather weak or overpriced, it's just cool to have some unique shit to cast that nobody else has.
>>
>>140933149
lets not forget nations getting spells they have no native access too as well! (ashdod, gath, i'm looking at you again!)
>>
>>140933508
>nations getting spells they have no native access too as well!
I don't really mind that, at least when they're inherited from previous incarnations of the nation. Like Hinnom -> Ashdod, Lanka -> Bandar, EA Mictlan -> MA Mictlan, etc. It's a neat way to emphasise that a certain type of magic has fallen out of favor, but the knowledge is still there. And if you break into the right paths, it still gives you all the benefits. Like breaking into Blood as Bandar is a pretty big deal, because it gives them access to all of Lanka's toys.
>>
>>140933508

To be fair, Asdod/Gath get national magic from a lore perspective as well.

>>
>>140932869
The problem is that while blood magic may have returned, the Avvim are dead and the Nephilim long gone. So too, as far as I can understand it, is the cult that worshipped them: While Gath has indeed revived blood sacrifice, it seems more to be a component in a continuation of the faith of Ashdod, replacing the old banquets. That idea is supported by the fact that Iassacharite sages are merely rediscovering "the forbidden lore of the Grigori",

I think most of the nation winrates can be modeled by considering blood nations, and national summons. You'd get a semi-accurate statistic and you could solve 90% of the balance in the game just by evening out power scaling so magic gems can be produced/acquired at the same rate as blood, and by giving all nations late game national summons.

>Mfw domg prefers eating weaker nations than forming coalitions against the strongest.
I'd like some form of impromptu alliances, like becoming someone's discipline midgame. Then being able to break away on your own again. Fighting stronger nations out of choice is just a bad idea. You risk putting yourself in serious danger and you help the people who are bound to be your enemies. You're always just better off eating the weak nations around you until it's down to three super nations and a bunch of AI. At which point it's mostly just who spawned next to the most T3/T2 thrones.

>Have an amphibious commander
With amphibious troops, he could cross this river no problem.

>Have flying troops
With a flying commander, they could cross this river no problem.

Why, exactly, can an amphibious commander not lead flying troops over a river? Does he get underwater and make all the troops confused by the lack of a commander because they can't see him? Have Dominions troops not developed object permanence?
>>
>>140939578
>if you win you're now the strong nation
Do you suddenly get their mages and summons because they took their cap? Their sacreds? Any of the things that actually make them strong? No you just get their land. Farms are gr8 but xibalba doesn't win games because they turn plains into farms when they take the provinces. Big != strong. Most of the land will get vultured anyway if you are thinking big = strong, so you wont even make that much.
>strong nation does the same and does it faster than you
So you both attacked the same dude at the same time. It happens. Take the provinces you can and then move on to the next target. Take provinces that look crucial to him and give you a foot up when he attacks you/he becomes the weakest nation through elimination.

>>
>>140940239
>Big != strong.
Economic strength translates into military strength. If a nation is strong but small, you can usually overwhelm them easily.

> Take the provinces you can and then move on to the next target.
Again, a strong nation will do the same and do it faster than you. Assuming players of more or less equal skill and he doesn't get fucked by the map layout, you're not going to out-expand a stronger nation. So what happens is that you get bigger, he gets bigger faster than you, and you end up in a worse situation that you're already in.

Ignoring a strong nation is never a good idea, because with only a few exceptions that strength is only going to get magnified as the game goes on. You used Xibalba as an example, but it's the perfect example of why you're wrong. An early game EA Xibalba can get overwhelmed easily as long as you can blitz his production centers. However, if you ignore him and let him grow large and hit his research goals, you reach a point where he simply can't be stopped anymore. It doesn't matter that you ate two weak nations in the mean time, because he's not just going to stale until you're bigger than him.
>>
>>140940239
Size isn't everything, but it is by far the most important thing.

Xibalba might have crazy summons and blood magic, but if they're fighting someone twice their size (who isn't retarded) they're going to lose to weight of numbers.

>>140940590
First do all beneficial battlefield spells. Check them before every fight too, they're really important. Toss up any battlefield enchantments which you think will hurt the enemy more than you as well.

Next, set a few spellcasters from each path on anti-SC duty. Stuff like Incinerate, Frozen Heart, Soul Slay, Drain Life, Disintegrate, Charm, etc. The more varied you can make the countermeasures, the better.

After that separate out the remaining mages by paths (A2, F2, D2, etc). For each group decide on a useful spell they can cast, and copy that script to the whole group. Assume your enemy will also have every buff in the game active, so things which aren't negated by resistances/protection/MR/etc are best.
>>
>i'll never be able to play this game

I usually dump a decent amount of chaff at the front so they tank enemy spells in place of actually useful units, then place the useful units starting with the strongest somewhere around the middle of the field and moving down to the weakest non-chaff at the back.

I would suggest you not rely on your troops being exactly where you placed them in large battles, since you're bound to have overlapping formations and where your units actually end up depends which order the formations are placed on the field (it's probably deterministic, but too much work to figure out).

I don't worry too much about formations or orders because it's hard to do anything precisely, and because there's just too many troops on the field to do anything fancy. Both sides' mages are going to be buried somewhere in the middle of their troop blobs, and the two troop blobs will meet in the center and very slowly whittle each other down. Set a few troops to guard your mages in case of Howl, and the rest can be on attack or hold and attack.

Because by having Well of Misery + GoH you literally force, in the mind of all, 2 options

Invade you immediately, as you have a game winning global combo.
Or have there own disgusting combo. From you saying there are two other big players, unless they have an Nexus/Wish powerplant, or are about to cast Astral Corruption, they're not really that big in comparison.

I suppose the third option is to just hand the game to you, but w/e. Or dispel it ofc. That's always an option too.

See, you claim to be familiar with modding, and then do something like question the point of a content-expansion mod, when they make up a very significant amount of all modding efforts in all games, and tend to be pretty popular.

Not only this, but one of the joys of modding is sharing your work with others, even if it doesn't wind up as a community standard or whatever.

Finally, Red_Rob is getting a pretty positive response to this creation, and several people have already grabbed it to try out. I'd say that his expectation that people would "actually use it" is entirely justified.

I'm not questioning the point of a content expansion mod, I'm questioning the point of a content exapansion mod where no actual plan seems to be behind the content added, other than MORE=BETTER.

Positive response is no argument. I'm sure My Little Pony mods for Skyrim also get pages and pages of positive response. That doesn't make them appropriate or even good.

Lambert decided 25 simultaneous games of Dominions weren't enough and decided to host a Dominions-themed D&D game.

Crux thought it would be a good idea to document the game.

https://cruxador.wordpress.com/2016/04/25/dungeons-dragons-and-dominions/
>>
>>140974630
You explicitly posted that your invasion was leaving you stretched out, and that you were bordering a megablessed TC. Somebody (me, who isn't in the game) ironically falseflagged TC as about to invade you to point out that you had just described your own point of weakness.

But yeah, going AI as soon as he got invaded by somebody bigger definitely showed how salty berry was. Oh, right. That wasn't berry, that was you.

>>140974760
So, your criticism is that you don't see a coherent theme?
>>
>>140975794
I'm not going AI because I got invaded, I'm going AI because I lost. The image that was posted in berry's misconstrued 'losses' was me losing 350 or so men to Ti'en Chi's megablessed army that was sieging my capital, to which he lost maybe fifty troops out of maybe four hundred?

Regen, quickened, death weapons summon armies for a rush are really not something an unprepared Ulm can deal with. With my fort under siege, I'm making about 300 income a turn, and Berry's remaining armies are trying to come back to take the scraps. It's not late enough in the game to be able to bane venom and fuck around with middle fingers like that, so there's really no point to my sticking around.

Also, link to where I posted that, or show a screenshot. Because I don't think I've missed a thread since and have no memory whatsoever of that. Maybe it was just stupid and I forgot it immediately, I dunno. My name's not password protected or anything though.
>>
>>140975794
Not necessarily a clear theme, but some kind of unifying vision or design at least. Adding stuff is cool, but with a game like Dominions which already has a shitload of spells, simply adding more ironically doesn't necessarily actually add anything to the game. I haven't gone thtough all of the spells added and I doubt I'll ever take the effort to, but to me it seems like very little actual thought went into the design of the spells and what they would or wouldn't add to the game. It's just a simple-minded "add more stuff" mentality that doesn't seem to care one bit for the game itself.

As far as I can see, the biggest change the mod makes to the game is cluttering the spell list with a load of trivial bullshit. In a game where there are already a lot of spells that are niche at best, that's not a good thing by any measure.
>>
>>140976397
The unifying theme is "there are lots of mid game generic spells, but not many end-game rituals and globals, and not many national spells. There should be more of those."
>>

Whether or not you see the need for a mod is a terrible standard for whether or not it should be made.

Also, reading through the desura thread makes it clear that a substantial amount of thought went into making this. That you don't think much did after what you've admitted is a cursor inspection is your problem, and not a meaningful criticism.

also, that's not how you use the word ironically.
>>
>>140976893
You certainly win points for persistence. You haven't been able to recruit much of anything for a while, your cap has been taken for several turns and yet you're still holding on with a big doomblob of sacreds. If I can manage to be only half as much trouble to take down as you when that inevitably happens I'll be content.

Right, the theme is "let's add more," if you choose to call that a theme. That's what I'm saying. That's not a design philosophy I think is worth entertaining.

Adding more endgame diversity and national spells would have been a decent theme if the overall design of the mod actually supported that theme. But adding 600 random spells isn't supporting any kind of theme, that's just cramming in loads of shit because you like big numbers.

>>
>>140979781
Not me. I'm not in any other games.

I really can't think of a time more appropriate to go AI than having near zero gem income, less than 200 gold in normal income, your capital under huge siege by a triplebless nation, and your standing armies eaten by bless.

>>
>>140977980
While there may be something to the accusation that I fell into the "let's add more" trap, the guiding theme was actually "make playing each nation feel more unique". Each nation having it's own spells is one more way playing Berytos feels different to playing T'ien Ch'i.

The final release will include a stripped down version with just the national spells and nothing else, and even then any spells that cause balance problems will also be removed. This version might be more to some people's taste. Or not, you'll never please all of the people all of the time and all that.

I'm not expecting any mod to be perfect, but I'm definitely more interested in the stripped down version than the current beta version.

Elite Army? This is EA Berytos were are talking about, right? Where my main infantry unit is in linen armor? Combat Pretender? Your F4E6 Pretender would've done just as good. You were bragging about your military superiority when you can't even get a decisive victory against a army 2/3's the size of yours, whose lineblocker are guys in freaking linen armor, with army that has guys with steel in their name all over the damn place.

Your took a forest, a cave, and wastelands and proclaimed easy victory. You were so sure that you were massively out producing me when I have more forts that you. You freaking sent an army into a massive stack of super sacreds without proper mage support.

Please don't focus too hard on that, I'd like to see a mod which doesn't try to keep the same old nations strong.

It's not like current national spells are well-balanced anyway, look at tlahuelpuchi and ozelotl. It'd be nice to have something comparably strong on other nations, or even just as a generic spell.

Berytos has better armor than EA Ulm, actually.

You have 10g troops with 10 protection and shields (not sure why you'd be using linen as your frontline instead of those guys), compared to Ulm's 10g troops with 10 protection and no shields.

If you're looking at more expensive troops you still win, having 12g troops with 14 protection and shields compared to Ulm's 13g troops with 11 protection and shields, or Ulm's 12g troops with 13 protection and no shields.
>>
>>141006123
Yeah, I'll grant that bullyberry is off the mark as to why, but lets not pretend that ulm's army is at an early game disadvantage vs. Berry's
>>
>>141006123
You're right. The main advantage of the linen guys is that they also benefit from flaming arrows, which was I was using them. I really can't use the more expensive troops in that situation though, due to MM1. That said, Ulm has much more killy troops with dual wielding.

>>
>>141015543
What's wrong with MUlm?
>>
>>141015589
It's just such an extreme nation where all the usual rules don't apply.

Your infantry's invulnerable to archer fire so you don't bother with arrow catchers, your forging is almost free so you don't stop to evaluate efficiency enough and you don't value a high gem income, your magic diversity is utter trash so you don't consider the majority of the game's magic, you have no sacreds aside from your three priests so a good bless doesn't even begin to be a consideration. It's just so... weird and different from most of Dominions. It may be easy to play, but it's not representative of the general experience.
>>
>>141015943
You mean they got all their bases covered. EA Agartha is sorta similar but with crappier troops.
>>
>>141016075
>You mean they got all their bases covered
If that was what I meant, I'd've said that. What I mean is that there's virtually no area of the game where Ulm isn't at some extreme or another, and that means that someone who gets used to thinking of them as the default - as you tend to do if you start out with something and then play it a lot - will have a really skewed view of the game.
>>
>>141017003
I mean they're a good nation for beginners. They're easy to understand and while they have a limited toolset, are really, really good with what they have. They're supposed to be very straightforward without any big gimmicks like flying or glamour.
>>
What's a good EA Agartha early expansion army? Earth reader, 6 olms and 20 paleone soldiers?
>>
>>141017724
Olms and pale ones pretty much murder everything with average to low MR.
>>
>>141017330
I just think you learn too many bad habits. I'd much rather people recommend e.g. the nation I started MP with, MA T'ien Ch'i. They have a wide range of troops which are basic enough to understand but varied enough to teach the new player about the pros and cons of various types of soldiers, they have massable mages that can be deployed in a manner that is both easy and effective, and they also have huge diversity via their cap-only recruits. I learned more from losing with MA T'ien Ch'i than I would have from winning as Ulm.

which might have worked if there was only one group of enemies. Unfortunately, there were two. One of which was diced up by my warriors and the other engaged my archers completely unmolested until they were routed by the loss of the first group.

>>141030250
Then post a full fucking turn file so I can shove your face into your obvious miscalculation, faget.
>>
>>141030314
I'm not about to send you my turn file. The situation was as follows:

14 diabolists - F1B1, encumbrance 3, with 1 fire gem each - were reinforcing some PD against a small army. They were standing far back, scripted to cast Phoenix Power and then subsequently Pillar of Fire.

Upon watching the battle report, I find that it is raining. Not as a spell, not because of any global, but simply as a visual effect.

Turn 1, my diabolists cast Phoenix Power. They all go to 43 fatigue. The enemy then spends some time fucking around with Stellar Cascading the PD. No cascades hit the diabolists, who are out of range. Turn 2, the diabolists cast Pillar of Fire, all going to 86 fatigue. The enemy does the same again. Turn 3, the diabolists cast Pillar of Fire, and they go to 129. This is the last cast of the battle, as they're now at 129 fatigue rather than the 69 they ought to be.

With my diabolists only casting half as many pillars as they should, the enemy fails to rout, and I lose the battle.

Where was my mistake?

>>
>>141032163
I'm not Rejakor, and look. There is barely any math to be fucked. There is barely any math, and it is so not fucked that if it were not for its near-nonexistence, it could double as a shadow vestal and an entire blood economy.

Fact 1: I have F1B1 mages with encumbrance 3.

Fact 2: Phoenix Power is an F2 spell costing 20 fatigue.

Fact 3: Pillar of Fire is an F2 spell costing 20 fatigue.

Fact 4: Immediately after casting Phoenix Power (using 1 gem), the F1B1 mage has accrued 43 fatigue. Its encumbrance remains 3. This is the case for all mages in the army.

Fact 5: The PD accrues no encumbrance for merely moving; it is hence not a static +encumbrance effect on the battlefield.

Fact 6: After casting Pillar of Fire, the mage (who is now F2B1 due to Phoenix Power) is at 86 fatigue. This is, again, the case for all mages in the army.

Every fire spell cast by my mages are costing 20 more fatigue than they should, which translates to a doubling of the base fatigue cost of the spells. The only effect of which I know that can cause a doubling of the cost of a fire spell is Rain. It is raining on the battlefield, not due to any spell, be it battlefield or global, nor has any event occured in the province that turn. The rain is, by all accounts, mundane.

So what other explanation exists than the doubling of the fatigue cost being due to the mundane rain?
>>

>>
>>141033716
That does look suspicious.

Still, I'd swear that Rain never messed with my fire casting unless it was magical rain. I'd go test it out but it's kind of a pain to make it rain without casting Rain...
>>
>>141033716
maybe it's a site that autocasts rain
maybe some mod fucks it up

We're only playing with Worthy Heroes 5.5, and I checked the turn file for when I originally conquered the province; there was no rain during that battle.

Looks like Illwinter is still alive at least, CoE4 got an update: http://steamcommunity.com/games/403950/announcements/detail/853807257471254949
>>
>>141020527
Is that it, then? What did AI Agartha have in that fort of theirs?
>>
>>141035146
Not much, but enough to make me into enemy territory. Oh well. You would have stopped me from taking Ulm's forts anyway.
>>
>>141035385
AI Agartha has been really annoying this game because of all the masses of summons they've accumulated. Where is the level 3 throne, is it underwater?
>>
>>141035612
No, that's the level 2. All the others are above ground.

But yeah, idk. This game shouldn't have had this high a throne requirement, at least not when there are level 3s and 2s. If I'd wanted to win, I'd've had to take literally all but the throne of knowledge.
>>
>>141035969
Well, I'm not complaining :^)
It's going to take a while to get all the thrones though.
>>
>>141018263
This "bad habits" thing is overwrought. Dominions isn't a reflexive game. You have time to deliberate. Habits aren't a thing.
>>
60 archers can't shoot when they're in a formation with ten non-archers, even when set to fire?
God damn it illwinter.
>>
>>141037621
The best I've been able to figure out how mixing archers with non-archers works it's that it's unreliable and inconsistent.

I once played a natgen game with sacred archers that turned into metal men on death. Sometimes it'd work just fine, occasionally one of them would die, turn into a robutt and drag the entire formation into melee with him.
>>
It's almost over now.

This game was a wild ride, but the last 40 turns were the most boring I've ever played on /domg/. Which is in large part my own fault, but fuck it, I had a shot at winning a game by domkilling the entire world and I'll be damned if I wasn't going to take it.

Better to use an indie commander and spend the difference in gold on more olms and pale ones. The more olms you have, the bigger an indie army you can take down. The more pale ones, the longer you can go before needing to replenish.

What should you do if you don't yet have a province with indie commanders?

>>141101221
Bogarus has a cool mage line up. For what it's worth, I think Jotunheim is pretty cool heh to play as since they have ridiculously strong communions if you use N9 shrouded skratti in werewolf form, and they have a very good lategame with blood, nature, death and astral access. They're cap dependent for their gygja's, but they're pretty beefy so they should only die if you lose a battle hard. Skratti also make for good thugs.
>>
>>141101221
Vanarus or Midgard, they both have Elf thugs, decent line mages, and strong units.
,
>>
>>141101221
That's entirely subjective. If you just want to smash face, EA Vanheim or niefelheim. Later on, MA Vanarus, LA Bogarus, MA Jotunheim, and LA Midgard are all "fun" in different ways.

Noob who offered to start a Let's Play series, just did a trial video and it wasn't completely terrible (outside of the big water mark for using trial software) I'm pretty far in to my current game but I think I'll start recording and posting for the next game I join. Also if anyone knows a good cheap screen capping software let me know (think I might buy the full version on the one I'm using when my tax return gets in)

The endgame graphs, in case anyone is interested.

This was definitely an interesting game for me, even if the last third of it was dreadfully boring. I literally had the worst start position on the map, wedged between water and mountains with only one viable expansion route, which was blocked by cavalry. With a little help of a neighbour I managed to get rolling, and when that same neighbour got invaded I helped him out which bought me a good chunk of land. After that it was mostly a matter of blocking off my neighbour to the east and being a shameless opportunist towards all the weak nations to the west. By the time I started to get serious I was already big enough that nobody wanted to mess with me, and I had a decent research lead as well at least part of the time. As a result I just snowballed against nations that were either too weak or too passive to stop me. At this point a few of the remaining players started going AI or chainstaling instead of trying to stop me, which meant it was game over for everyone remaining. Qurgya made one valiant attempt at a throne rush near the end of the game, but when I cockblocked that and his only option was to siege a fort he could never take, he started chainstaling as well. Then, there was nothing left but to pass every turn as quickly as possible and watch my white candles slowly cover the entire map.
>>
>>141144217
>I got big and everyone else gave up or started chain-staling
Story of /domg/
>>
>>141146767
Pretty much.

Even after I started getting big, there were a couple of nations that could have stopped me. Cherakuse and Qurgya being the most obvious ones. In fact, Cherakuse was on a peninsula and I controlled the only way off of it, so if he had any intention of winning the game he would have HAD to crush me. But he never even tried, instead trying to expand through the sea and going AI when that didn't work out. I'm not sure if Qurgya was at war with someone else all the time or if he just never felt like stopping me until it was already too late, but he could have completely wrecked me if he had only done so early enough.
>>
ded
>>
EdgyRoleplayGame C'tis, are you going to start chainstalling? Come on. The damage hasn't yet been done (your forces are still intact) so you could at least have the decency of playing a few turns to send those armies against your enemies properly scripted and then go AI if you lose those decisive battles.

Shouting across the sky and water?

They are 2 different forms of locomotion, it makes sense they aren´t interchangeable

Nothing you say will make a good enough point to make things change.
>>
>>141165987
It's not about making things change, it's about your argument being really stupid.
>>
>>141166086
It is not stupid.
Have you ever seem military movements?

It is not just walk forward. The troops need their commander in order to walk around. If the commander is in the sky how can he order the troops down on the water swimming.

And the size of the river is big enough so units that can´t breath underwater can´t cross.

The counter-arguments were just worse then mine.
>>
>>141166290
>my arguments are good because I say so
I guess soldiers are just too stupid to walk in a straight line for a mile or so.

Besides, you know that the only reason it works the way it does is because the game can only assign a movement type to an army if every single unit in the army has that movement type, so a mixed army of flying and amphibious units ends up having neither.
>>
>>141166290
>>141166086

>>
>arguments about realism in Dom4
Rejakor, is that you?

That's my exactly point. It's about game mechanics interacting in certain ways. It has nothing to do with what is or isn't realistic.

I tired watching this, but my comp couldn't handle the craziness after like Round 4.

What happened: C'tis used Undead Mastery on my stuff, and put Army of Lead on it. I put Army of Lead on my own ghosts. Lemurian Ghosts with Army of Lead have issues killing other Lemurian Ghosts with army of lead, who'd have thought it.

Also Rigor Mortis+Grip of Winter in C3 killing all his shit with fatigue before the auto-route.

We also had a minor skirmish here, just me pushing a tiny army off on of my forts.

Oh good, you can't watch it either. Guess I'll try tanking my visual settings later to see what went on.

And time to find a solution to Grip of Winter. Shouldn't be too hard, just wish I could cast Warriors of Musephelm over Army of Lead.

I'm confused, you can't cast muspelheim warriors why exactly?

You had like an F9 there iirc
>>
>>141171665

From what I remember, it over-writes Army of Lead. All the "your troops skin becomes like xyz" spells dispel each other.

You are dum.
>>
>>141172603

Just tested this in SP. Army of lead and Warriors totally stack.

Since when?

Similar effects overwrite eachother, like multiple Protection buffs (like how Mass Protection doesn't stack with Army of Lead), but any other effects do.

Army of Lead is Protection and MR, Warriors of Muspelheim is Cold Resist. They're different effects, so they totally stack.

So if air shield doesnt stop rain of stones what does?

actual protection buffs
>>
>>141174459
High protection, whether naturally or though buffs (assuming you can get the buffs off before RoS is cast) nullifies it. Fog Warriors works. Luck helps a lot as well, but isn't as reliable and doesn't do much against repeated casts.

The best counter is simply having high HP and protection, but of course that's not always an option.

Sorry guys, I've been mostly bedridden with the flu since yesterday. I even took my turn from bed, such is my dedication.

He took the bait I assume?
>>
>>141181603

I don't recall any bait. If you mean storm any forts, no, I didn't do that either.

Worry not, badmans, for we shall redouble our efforts and return with a vengeance.

so ctis is attacking both bats and ghost? ballsy

Less him taking the bait, more fighting in Cold 3 without cold resist because he didn't understand how some spells worked.

He did storm into RoS, but that's less bait, and more just standard fare at this point. Now excuse me while I reload the old turn file to figure out what happened to one of my Grand Lemurs who just poofed off the face of Flatus for some fucking reason.
>>
>>141183306

You should have said "not yet he didn't" and left him wondering "what bait exactly?" just to piss him off.
