120mm plate was only intitial production. You can consider it test batch. Change of armor is small thing, supposely there has been nearly 1500 changes to project, before tank was accepted to serial production.
As for question. Serial production T-54 had 100mm thick RHA plate angled at 60 degree from vertical, so in straight line that's 200mm of armor. Strong angle also strongly reduced effectivness of HVAP ammunition aganist it.
Steel was softer than used in T-34 (290 BHN vs 350 BHN), to make it less prone to catastrophic failure of plate after taking multiple hits.
As proved by Yugo tests, it was unpenetrable to any 50's tanks and anti-tank guns except if they were using HEAT.
Turret was much weaker. Middle of turret was much less sloped, not to mention it was casted steel. 88mm Pak-43 and 90mm M3 could pierce it at ranges from 350 to 750m depending on AP round used.

Nothing's free though. Small tank has little space inside. It means it's harder for crew to move around (especially for loader who HAS to move around), and they get worn out faster. This affects fire rate. T-55 crew was expeced to shot 5-6 shots in minute, Patton's loader would not qualify if he could not load 10 rounds in a minute. Low placed gun kicks plenty of dust when firing, making it hard for crew to observe target and results of fire. There's little space for ammunition: doesn't sound like issue in War Thunder, but in reality 2/3rd of your racks would be occupied by HE for infantry support. Finally, low volume inside means there's higher chance for crew to be knocked out by overpressure when penetrated by HEAT shell of RPG.

Im not defending the implementation of the Panther II in the game ,it's simply the the proposed design , a Panteher F with the Panther II engine settings would have been fine it it's place as well.
