I finally finished 03 after dropping the trial back when it first came out because the VA choices triggered me. I definitely had my fun with it, but it really doesn't come close to the other large scale RPGs of the series, namely R6 and R9.
The battle system is simply baffling, why would they give so many characters only to limit you so much with skill slots? There are many interesting skills you never use, because the space for them is so limited and you're better off just using 0-T cooldown attacks with maximum coverage spells. In effect, all combat amounts to holding CTRL and mindlessly choosing the same reliable skills in every encounter. Actually I would rate what little I remember of the system of 01 higher since there was more strategy involved in these chips, also the final boss in that game gave me at least some trouble (speaking of final bosses, I really can't remember what 03's final boss theme sounded like and I just heard it two hours ago, it was that forgettable).
The re-used ADV presentation of 01 fits this game badly, having only one actual sprite on the screen was alright for 01 where most dialogues were 1-on-1, but in 03 they try to simulate R9-style battles with this scheme and the result is laughable. The narration can be as dramatic at it wants, at no point does it feel like a huge battle or something of the like is taking place with these sprites shifting all over. I sorely missed variations of the main sprites, and the complete lack of animation in that regard is no plus point. There are very few non-H CGs, I thought the one from the original with Sill and Rance looking at the castle near the end of the game was a bit iconic for it, but since it didn't make it into the remake, I must have been mistaken.
As for the story and characters, I assume enough has been said on here (btw I don't see why they felt the need to practically copy two characters from R6 here, i. e. the green bug girl and the sleeping one).

I didn't get over some of the VAs though, and worst of all by far is Sills'. At this point I don't even care that the voice should fit the character, just give her a voice that isn't a pain in the ears, especially if you consider how many lines she gets as a major character. Fuck, just give the role to Kawarino or something. Or don't instruct her VA to imitate a pre-schooler, that would probably also do it. I seriously hope enough people complained about this, so we don't have to suffer through the same thing in R10.

I think it's especially bad that all characters have practically the same posture and expression for all events. How hard can it be to draw like in R9 one angry sprite, one sad sprite, etc., at least for the major characters? The sprites twitching around like bizarre marionettes does not compensate this lack.
Also, I'm listening to final boss BGM again now, and it sounds like some badly imitated Eushully track. I really wonder what the hell went wrong here.

I listened a few times to this track now, and my impression remains unchanged. 0:22-0:42 and 1:06-1:32 sound like mediocre rip-offs of Shade's style for the final boss tracks of R8. The first eight, nine seconds of the track sound promising and remind me of the excellent track "覇道" from Verita, but this intro is not followed up upon here. 0:45-1:05 is pretty standard "hyping" with a choral background that's been done better elsewhere.
I could use some advice about Kichikuou.
What are the best uses for my money? Should I be increasing troop size or buying items from the shop first?
If I should be increasing troop sizes, which units are the best candidates for this? Are Barres, Leila, Rick, or Rance good choices?
Is there any strategy to being able to beat the Helman garrisons at Log A/B by attacking via the mountain pass beyond attacking over and over again until they are out of troops? I know you can obviously use Shangri-La to bypass that whole shitshow, but I was wondering if there was something I was missing. When Lelyukof alone hits my best units for 300 troops per attack, it would seem to be nearly impossible to win via that method.

Possible that they changed plans after the reception of 03, who knows. Nowadays it really is the absolute norm for every eroge though, and it shouldn't be a too much of a strain for a company of Alicesoft's standing. As for too much text preventing the inclusion of VA, other ero-RPGs often get around this by keeping minor side quests unvoiced, which is a fair compromise and does not detract from the overall picture of the game.

Actually 03 and IX difference regarding the ADV is just a question of POV. In both you have only two characters on the screen at the same time, but in IX you're seeing it from outside, while in 03 you're seeing it through one character POV. In IX in scenes where 3 or more characters are interacting you also need to change the sprites all the time to convey it. 03 being in a character POV means you're generally fixed on one for some time, but fortunately it actually have many scenes that change to others POV, which worked well IMO.
The combat not needing strategy happens if you're overleveled, and that is something all Alicesoft RPGs have, be it 01, VI, Quest, IX or Evenicle. I would agree it's easier to grind in 03 than your usual game (you grind a lot just by trying to revisit places after an story event or fully exploring and mapping every dungeon).

The reason the sprites are the same is likely because they are instead more dynamic in posture meaning you would need to make a completely new one to fit a different expression. IX, for example, has neutral body postures so you can fit many expressions on them just by changing the face without making it look weird.

My biggest problem with voices in 03 is the fact that Rance isn't voiced. I know it's standard to leave the hero unvoiced, but Rance is a character with too much personality to do something like that. It just looks awkward to me and it's the only reason why I turned the voices off.

Yes, but instead of two sprites as in R9, in 03 you see one sprite with no variations and one mono-coloured "shadow" from the back, which is simply lazy. The other extreme is R6's presentation where you have several sprites piling up on the screen, which isn't ideal either. In R9 at least you could see the parties conversing and the expressions they were making, and more importantly, there were more non-H CGs to vary the presentation, though even in that game not as much as I would have liked. Also, neutral body postures are arguably the most reasonable choices for the standing sprites, since you will see them more often in normal conversations instead of readying for battle,
As for the combat, I only remember grinding a bit in the very beginning because the levels went up so fast, but else I mostly rushed through the devil road, the Hyper building, the forest, and I also used the short-cut in that one tower, so I didn't feel very overleveled. My main party was in the end around level 40, and I never found it necessary to grind as in R6 for example.
