It's polarising for several reasons. Some feel that Sonic hit the polygon ceiling when he made the jump to 3D. Not that the game was bad per say, just no-where near as great as it was on the Genesis. Which, as always on the internet, gets aggrandised into people saying that Adventure was a terrible game.
Then you have those who love it, whom truth be told from what I've seen, are those who grew up with it and hold it in fond memory.
Of course, on both sides people feel that any slight/praise of the game is tantamount to saying the game was perfect/terribad. As such, people get bitchy about it.
