Hello everyone.
I hate to be writing this post but it has to be done.
We were not prepared for approximately 18000 attempts at accessing the login servers simultaneously, concurrently with fighting off ongoing DDOS attacks we've been experiencing this week.
The server's hardware was not capable of so many connections at once and went down shortly after launch.
We have been taking steps to upgrade the hardware and restore the servers as quickly as possible.
Additionally, we are not providing any detailed information as to when the project will be up. As soon we are satisfied with the upgrades we will bring it online again. We expect this take at the very most, 1-2 days.
Our goal for gradual increase in population on launch day was short sited as many players were willing to wait however long it took. Hopefully this time around having a vague and large window will alleviate some strain and let players start experiencing the project gradually.
We now ask of you all, the players and community:
Have patience!
Go about your lives, please don't sit there and refresh all day. Checking back once in a while will save you frustration and unwanted stress that would occur otherwise. There is plenty of that going around already.

Leveling is nice, almost perfect questing up to northrend. The population is huge so if you play during EU times you'll see quite many people on leveling zones.

5-6 GMs were sitting around in Discord with no info on them about the release time, and the Twitch countdown went down for streaming 13 hours of nothing but youtube videos with no real content, so one of the admins decided to hop on his channel and start streaming a "countdown" of sorts for a few hours. GMs had no idea this was gonna happen, but nothing happened for a while until about an hour before release, the admin started logging on and playing his GM characters and showing off character creation on the server, so more people got amped up.
15 minutes till release he puts up a countdown, and then says "by the way, even though twitter and the forums have all been saying 'the realmlist is staying what it is/was on the website' I'm gonna give you guys an IP address for the realmlist instead."
So suddenly the GMs are scrambling in Discord to figure out what the fuck he's talking about and why they aren't already online to be ready to keep things from spiraling out of control and take reports, they have no prior knowledge of the change in plan, NONE of the admins will message them back about anything going on, and the 15 minutes goes by.
Admin posts the IP, and things went to hell. People logged in and managed to make some characters, reserve a few names, but other than that no one got any play time outside of talking to a few of the first NPCs, because the server kept crashing over and over and over and dc'ing everyone and rebooting. I'm pretty sure it was 20 minutes into the release that the admin on stream said "yeah I can't get back in either". Why? Because their HOST cut them off because of the massive DDoS coming down the pipes. They're reporting 18k people accessing the server. There was only around 7k accounts at last check.
So now we're being told the server is staying down and will go back up in 1 or 2 days.
tl;dr: they said "oh it'll be a gradual population increase" and were surprised when an overly hyped stream got the servers to crash.

I was in a top horde guild on my server for 3 years and the best players went with the group 1 raid in both tbc and wotlk, simple as that. You just can't accept not being in g1 simply because the GM is there so it's automatically viewed as the superior group when they're pretty even. I have no problem being in g2 because we clear it slightly slower and I still have fun. I really don't care about loot, I would expect the better players to get the good loot first just like it should work in every self respecting raiding guild.

Yeah, that's the big issue for me, is there are SO many servers and quite a few of them aren't worth the time depending on what someone wants out of it. It's difficult to have to go register/logon to each one to figure things out, and just as difficult to rely on shilling - well intentioned or not.

It reminds me a little of trying to find decent UO shards, or even different MUD games, and you'd invest a few weeks and have fun then find out a particular group is being aided by GMs and you're bummed for wasting your time. Tho I guess maybe that's just how life is.
