They're great for two-tier castles. slap em on the second wall and watch samurai drop just as they climb the first.

Single tier castles are pretty good as well, if you remember to rotate them out before the enemy finishes climbing.

It's good and bad

On the one hand the slow regeneration makes things a lot easier, but if you get in a big fight and one gets wiped out you can't send one from your homeland recruitment province because of the general system. Either hire a new general and army to bring them all the way over and then merge, or run all the way back

Because the limited building plots mean you have to be pretty specific with the direction you take a province in. Why would I recruit shitter levies from the very edge of a giant empire instead of elites from the closest province with all the recruitment support buildings I was able to make?

In Rome, Medieval, Empire, and Shogun 2 for example I would have a few provinces with super high tier army buildings and all their supports, from there I'd send reinforcements to the front or small armies (like 4 units) to tail the main armies as reserves to get it back up to strength immediately or garrison newly conquered cities to let the boys keep going

Why the hell Generals were made mandatory makes no sense to me, it just made nearly every battle the same 20v20 and generals worthless because there's an infinite amount of them.

That's the /twg/ consensus on Hellenika so far?

The premises look good but I think they focus on historicity too much and the new mechanics make the game needlessly overcomplicated. My campaign lasted for 10 minutes, until I discovered that sieging units get +100% to upkeep, making it impossible to siege a town for a turn without getting into negative income. And I don't get their combat mechanics, with osthimos and shit.

I can't speak to Europa Perdita. For FOTE I didn't want to mess with the startpos mercenary placement, we will in the future so for now it was trying to jerry-rig stuff onto CA's. Unfortunately for this period you really would have a preponderance of Germanic mercenaries, while in the East I tried to go with the most broad categorization since CA had the same mercs in Anatolia as in the Iranian plateau.
