I made a battle theme

https://soundcloud.com/iwilldevouryourkittens/miscreant-menace

I'm hoping it'll work for a tense and climactic battle. Thoughts?

You can do it anon!

Just curious, but in the summer I would have a ton of free time and would like to help people with their games, I really just want experience so you don't have to pay me or anything, just give credit IF I do any meaningful work for you. I don't want to contribute ideas, or try to change your game. I just want to work as though I was an employee of the guy.

Would anyone be interested in this?

I'm trying to replicate the first few steps of this http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/AAdonaac/20150903/252889/Procedural_Dungeon_Generation_Algorithm.php?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

and unity's damn collision boxes always get stuck if they're too close to one another. They only spread like the tutorial if they are close but not overlapping a lot.

Is there a fix for this?

At the time of summer I would be done with all computer science classes I would need to graduate, finishing a business minor over the summer.

So I'm decent at coding at the video game level, having taken classes like artificial intelligence, and graphics. I can't say I'm much of a composer but I do have a midi keyboard I've been messing. And have been teaching myself how to draw but I don't have a tablet or anything like that yet.
>>
Post ideas you'd like to see tried out in MMOs. Anything that would help mix up the formula that they all seem to follow nowadays.

Personally I'd like to know if a video game economy could survive if there was a more or less fixed amount of gold in the world. The supply would slowly inflate from, I dunno, characters mining it or something, but there'd be no random gold on monster corpses unless the monster had killed something and picked it up.

>>

Well how would you account for NPCs who have to be paid for stuff, like traveling, repairing, vendor like stuff? Does that money just go away? Also how do you stop a player from hoarding money then just quitting the game with their character intact.

No worries, we all feel the same way. Nothing better than having someone tell you they like something you put time into.

Now that Im done ranting about my personal feelings I will give some feedback on your song.

The melodies were pretty catchy and I like the intrumentation. The song works as a battle theme. I have to say that Im not fond of the key change by the end of the loop. Key changes might work better in pop songs and songs that arent meant to be listened to on a loop and cause you hear the key change so often it kind of cheapens it a bit.

Also when making music that is supposed to be looped the rule of thumb is usually that you want the end of the loop and the start of the loop to be as close in dynamics as possible. If the loop ends with a bang and it starts again with a fizzle its super easy to hear the loop point and the music will get tedious more quickly.

Maybe Im just preaching to the choir but there you go
>>
>>138112803
The awareness of looping is definitely something that separates great game music from good/ok game music. When composing you have to assume infinite repeats and compose that way.

How does the first note sound? How does it sound second time through? Third? ... How does it sound after time has passed and another battle comes up?

I love the fuck out of Pillars of Eternity, and for the most part the music is fantastic, but some of the battle music is almost a little too... intense? Battley? So on its own it's a great piece of music, but on repeat it starts to wear on me.
>>
>>138112597
I dunno, thats why I want to test it out. Maybe have it structured so that there's simulated cashflow between vendors. Like a potion seller would have to buy his materials from the same vendor that the players buy their potion crafting materials from. That'd also have the effect of making some areas poorer then others naturally, instead of by developer interference, and giving the players the ability to do some jewing themselves, both of which people seem to like. As far as players quitting with fat stacks in their inventory, I'd have to talk to my buddy in economics. He'd probably start talking about tensors and shit.

I have an "action input" object that handles timed hits. During the attack animation it creates the "action input" object and sets the input time window, position of the 'visualization' (i.e. the shrinking circle that lets you know when to press the button) and a script to run that handles the result of the action input.

The "action input" object then counts down the input time window (e.g. if a 1 second time window @ 60 FPS would mean it counts down from 60 over 60 steps). If you press the input key during this time, it stores the current countdown as your "last input time" and ignores any input for a while (e.g. until the countdown - lastInputTime > n).

Once the countdown reaches 0 it checks your last input time and compares it to the timed hit thresholds (e.g. "nice" is 6 steps or 1/10 of a sec, "good" is 12 steps or 1/5 of a sec). It then displays the "NICE"/"GOOD"/"BAD" text, plays a sound, etc. and finally runs the script that you originally passed in (and passes an argument to the script for whether it was nice/good/bad/etc). The script handles the action itself (e.g. if it's an attack it deals damage, if it's the 'identify monster' move it identifies, etc).

I think that its important to have "rests" in your songs too where your ears can "recover" cause in a lot of battle themes the music has to be fast and intense to set the mood and after a while that will get pretty annoying to listen to.

The only example I could think of right now at the top of my head is this song

https://youtu.be/ooZyHLLQ5e8

Even though its very intense its still has a few low dynamic moments so that its not just 100% at all times. Plus the breaks makes the intense parts even more effective.

Its all about keeping the ear interested for a long time. If your melodies are catchy too than that is of course a giant plus.
>>
Does anyone know how much it costs to have your game ported by a third party to a different platform?

I guess it depends on the length of the code, the similarity of the languages and the renown of the studio among other things, but with those variables in mind, how much can it be?

Like how much per line for a nobodies studio?

The whole point of setting up a model is so that you can test your system, see the "steady state solution" (at time = inf), see what happens when you add a periodic "force" (maybe production up in summer season, etc).

Even if you have some random players who happen to keep their attention on your game, that's a bad way to test the system because if it's broken, they leave. Sorry but that seems like you're setting yourself up for failure.
>>
>>138113801
your game needs to have cute girls or lewds to get any response here

if you insist here is a little tip, don't actually post progress. post stuff like "how does this weapon look?" or "how is this juice?". the average IQ in here is grade school level so you need to frame your posts as basic questions people can instantly respond to, no one wants to actually think and give constructive criticism
>>
>>138111194
This is really good. The other anon was right about the beginning being weak (I get what you were trying to do with the "start slow" thing but there's something off about it).

Also the main instrument sounds muffled somehow? Might be intentional but maybe try experimenting with different instruments/samples/whatever. It sounds fine in the main part of the song but when it's solo at the beginning it sticks out.
>>
>>138115843
Reddit is also quite literally worthless. Tried posting my stuff on /r/gamedev a few times and the respones I got can be boiled down to

>>
>>138115634
Im more interested in what will happen when I just leave it alone and dont exert my godlike power over the game. Im not too interested in how the NPC world would fare, because an easy sim could tell me that. The whole point was to what the players as a group would do with it.

It sounds like you have a bad case of tittybabyism. I suggest you stop being a tittybaby.

Adjust your progress posting if it's not working for you. Like someone else said, ask direct questions, use it partly as a short devdiary "today I blahblah, check it out", etc.

Also adjust your replies to progress, because apparently you feel that doing so entitles you to feedback of your own. This appears to be a symptom of your tittybabyism, so clearing that up should help here too.

Aha! Okay, let me explain.

The blue numbers indicate that all the panels with that number are a part of the same sequence. So both of these enemies have two different attacks each. I wrote down SFX to indicate that in sequence 2 for each enemy, their attack would include a feint, which is basically the enemy trying to bait you into blocking too early, which leaves you open to their more powerful attack.

To make that more clear, I have removed the blue numbers and instead drew lines connecting related panels together.

I don't know how you guys do it. I love art, but I hate any career that has to do with art.

I find it really hard, for example, to work with the completely banal video game industry. So many games these days are complete dogshit.

Even if you "make it", whether you're an artist or game designer, you'll likely work on AAA trash like Battleborn, League of Legends, Call of Duty, Far Cry, Assassin's Creed instead of tasteful titles like Witcher, Dark Souls, The Division, Battlefleet Gothic, Dishonored etc.

I'd really think about loopability. Good composition of a song is not the same as good composition in game music. I love the little melody in the first one, but I'd quickly get tired of it. Second is nice and atmospheric, but also that's the easiest sort of thing to loop. Third is fun and has a good kind of "structure" for game music (bweep-bweeps of various kinds, with occasional pauses and additional stuff). I dunno about the 4th one, not sure what kind of game it would go with.

You weren't asking for feedback but I gave it anyhow HA. From a song-music standpoint I like your style.

I'm interested in techniques for videogame music that are more complicated than playing an mp3 in the background, I like thinking about that stuff. Like if song is A->B->C->A->B->C->A... in structure, having like a probability that instead of B it'll go to B' which is a variation on B, that sort of thing.

Dark souls was sloppy as fuck, even the first one. It's one of the most ideaguyish games I've ever played. I'm not saying I disliked it, but it certainly wasn't developed with care for anything other than "I THOUGHT UP THIS COOL GUY WITH A GIANT SWORD AND-" etc.

>The Division
Also, don't shit on Battleborn. It's one of the few modern games that earns its pricepoint. Full single-player campaign with optional co-op, loads of content, no microtransactions, plenty of gamemodes, huge cast of unique characters and abilities, competitive multiplayer, geniuninely fun, it's got it all. Where as Overwatch has even less content but it's Blizzard and heavily marketed. Just because Randy Pitchford exists doesn't mean everyone else should get shat on at Gearbox.

And not every game needs to be a work of art, just like how not every movie is an award winning film. It's ok to watch Direct to DVD movies, they aren't stopping people from making artsy films, they have their own audience. AAA games can have great art direction, not sure why you're shitting on LoL, they're art style is constantly improving and they're updating the old amature-looking garbage from when they first started out. All the games you listed as garbage look great and have tight, responsive controls for the most part.

And the answer?

For this particular variation of source.png he's posted it over 20 times.

https://boards.fireden.net/_/search/image/MQpnOFT8-UhB-vO1PzJLGg/

For another, 11 times!

https://boards.fireden.net/_/search/image/l-oDay5PjUvxqlt_1d6faw/

Imagine the mental state of someone who bullies their own work with false flag shitposting over 31 times. If we were to look up all the other variations he's posted, we'd see that he's been at this for over 7 months and has posted the same image over 67 times in order to bully himself and shitpost agdg.

Truly amazing to watch this level of psychosis in a person who actually thought he had the right to bully other gamedevs.

Let's watch as the freakshow continues!

>>138128714
I don't need anything right now, I'm a useless nodev who can't get started on his game, so I just try to give feedback when I'm around.

But if you just want a random idea, how about some weather-channel style light jazz muzak?

If you like the idea of the A->B->C->... but randomly going to B' or B'' or C' instead thing, I'm interested in thinking about how that would work. I guess one thing for sure is that A, A', A'', ... would have to mix nicely with whatever comes before and after, and same with the B's and C's of course.

http://setosa.io/ev/markov-chains/ this is kind of the idea. I'm sure markov chains have been used in music before, but I just have no experience with any of it.

So like, for these purposes, some middle node has say 50% chance of going to M and 50% chance going to M'. And at M, say 1/3 chance N, 1/3 N', and 1/3 N'', stuff like that. So to do that, you'd have to have M and M' which mix well with N, N', and N''.

Maybe this is an interesting way to get variation, or maybe it will sound like shit, who knows.
