I can smell 200mil in Deathsmiles. Just need to improve scoring on Forest stage.
I've been thinking about dpad vs arcade stick for shmups. I've never played on stick but I assume dpad is pretty suitable for horizontals and stick really shines in verticals. Is this true?
>>
>>137851028
As long as the method of control isn't literally broken, it does not matter in the least. I almost solely use a dpad because I can make quicker direction changes like I'm accustomed to with a keyboard.

How would the scrolling direction make any difference?
And it's pretty widely accepted that dpad/thumbstick is the worst input method, but that doesn't mean it can't work for you.

Just be aware there will be a fairly long transition period if you pick up stick

Bullshit. Three fingers covering the same area lets you do diagonals and change directions a lot faster and more precisely.

>Just means you're more used to it, not a valid argument
No, it means that it is more intuitve if I just have to press right/up on the thumbstick or d-pad, instead of having to press two keys simultaneously.

>Three fingers covering the same area lets you do diagonals and change directions a lot faster and more precisely.
I thought it was exactly the same? Are you fucking retarded? First you say keyboard is better than pad, then you say they are the same, now you say keyboard is better again... You are obviously fucking retarded...
>>
>>137861148

Yeah, the huge difference is you have less control and precision, which is my point. Are you suddenly agreeing with me now?

>No, it means that it is more intuitve if I just have to press right/up on the thumbstick or d-pad, instead of having to press two keys simultaneously.
When I want to go up right on a keyboard, I press up/right on the arrow keys. Same shit. Are you stupid? The only reason you'd see that as any less intuitive is if you're just more used to dpad, which is not an argument for its general viability.
>>
>>137861341
>the huge difference is you have less control and precision, which is my point.
You don't make any points, fucktard. You constantly change your opinion and just talk retarded nonsense.

>I press up/right on the arrow keys. Same shit. Are you stupid?
It's not the same at all if you have to press two keys simultaneously with two fingers instead of just having to press a single direction with only one finger. You are obviously fucking stupid, since you can't even comprehend simple logic.

On dpad you're pressing two buttons with one finger, on keyboard you're pressing two buttons with two fingers. Same thing but more control.

You fucking retard first said pad is worse than keyboard. Then you said it would be the same, then you said it would be worse again, etc etc. You are completely fucking retarded.

It's not more control at all, in contrary, doing diagonals is much more difficult if you have to press two keys simultaneously with two fingers than just pressing in a direction with one finger.

Thanks for proving you still can't read, because the answer to that is clearly right there in the post you just responded to.

>It's not more control at all, in contrary, doing diagonals is much more difficult if you have to press two keys simultaneously with two fingers than just pressing in a direction with one finger.
Are you only playing the first few stages of games? Because being able to instantly transition from direction to direction with perfect precision is mandatory for these games. When you have to physically move your single thumb around to do so, that's objectively less control than being able to cover multiple directions at the same time.

Try doing a pattern where you need to rapidly tap left and right with frame perfect precision, go ahead and tell me it's easier to rattle your thumb left and right than to press two separate keys with individually moving fingers.

There's no point in arguing with retards who refuse to read or take in basic logic.

B-But I just like the stick out of personal preference... plus it might be nice to be used to controlling with a stick in case I get the chance to play in an actual arcade. Not that there are any around.

Really though, I think this argument is kinda pointless. People should use what they like and not care if other people use different controllers. It's certainly not worth fighting over.

It feels like we have this argument a lot, but I guess that's the price to keep the thread alive sometimes...
>>
>>137862943

I play JRPGs like this, since holding the controller is too much of a chore for those games and there's so little to press you usually only need one hand on the controller.

I can do such patterns perfectly fine with a pad. I fail to see your problem with this.
Why don't you try to do a fast transition from pressing left/down direction to pressing right/up direction for a change?
Doing this with a pad is simple as fuck, but with a keyboard it is much difficult.

If you still don't know what the word "except" means, then no, you can't read.

>I can do such patterns perfectly fine with a pad.
And you could do it a lot better on a real input method.

>Why don't you try to do a fast transition from pressing left/down direction to pressing right/up direction for a change?
>Doing this with a pad is simple as fuck, but with a keyboard it is much difficult.
In that example they're the same thing, you're moving one finger between two states.
So what you're telling me is in your best case example they're equal, in my typical example keyboard is better. So why even reply?

I don't care what method you use and prefer, but trying to pitch an objectively inferior control scheme with less rapid precision as the best is always going to be stupid.
>>
>>137866092
>If you still don't know what the word "except" means, then no, you can't read.
You fucking retard didn't even write "except", you wrote "expect". And apart from this were you acting as if it was the same.
>It's literally the exact same thing
>It's exactly the same.
You were acting as if using one or three fingers wouldn't matter, you fucking retard.
>And you could do it a lot better on a real input method.
So now pads are not "real input methods" anymore? You are trying to troll on the lowest levels now.
>In that example they're the same thing, you're moving one finger between two states.
You do not move one finger on keyboard there, you have to move three fingers.
>So what you're telling me is in your best case example they're equal
No, they are not equal at all. Pad is obviously better for these games. The best is still arcade stick, but keyboard is just complete crap for these games, except you only play simple shit like touhou or whatever.
>>
>>137867739
>You fucking retard didn't even write "except", you wrote "expect". And apart from this were you acting as if it was the same.
I don't even have words for how stupid you are if you can't read through a blatant typo.
Ignoring context and arguing semantics instead of the actual point only weakens your argument.

>You were acting as if using one or three fingers wouldn't matter, you fucking retard.
Even more proof you can't read.

>You do not move one finger on keyboard there, you have to move three fingers.
No, you move one. Left and right fingers stay exactly where they are.

>No, they are not equal at all. Pad is obviously better for these games.
"I'm right because I say so" is not an argument, anon.

Intuitiveness has nothing to do at all with hoe effective an input method is. Hitboxes for fighters are unintuitive as fuck but lots of tournaments ban them because the amount of control and precision they give you is practically cheating.

Meanwhile your only argument for pad is "hurr it's more intuitive"
Fuck off retard, you lose. Play whatever you want, but don't run around trying to convince yourself the shitty method you're used to is better.
>>
>>137868329
>Left and right fingers stay exactly where they are.
If you do this you won't move at all, you fucking retard. All you will do is just moving upwards when pressing up.

But whatever, I'm done arguing with retards like you.
>>
>>137868814
Pressing a button is not moving a finger, it's already in place. Moving a finger from place to place weakens precision, having fingers already on multiple spots so you don't have to move before pressing increases precision.
On keyboard you just have to press for everything but up/down, on pad you always need to move and press. I don't understand what there is to not get about this.

>But whatever, I'm done arguing with retards like you.

It means you can change directions faster and more precisely, since those two directions are both covered at once.

Your own lack of skill with a control scheme doesn't mean it's bad.

I can change directions perfectly fine with pad or stick. Also if you have to move left-down and right-up for example, keyboard becomes complete crap.

This has nothing to do with skill, fucktard. Just because some people also can play fighting games with their mouth, doesn't mean it's an acceptable input method.
>>
>>137888069

This has everything to do with skill. You suck eggs with one control scheme and so assume it's the input method's fault, and when presented with people that perform just fine with a keyboard you bunker down and shitpost about it.

Oh the irony.
It's funny how the amount of skill you have on your control scheme of choice does count but the amount of skill you have on the one you don't like doesn't.

Shmups rarely even have you moving in 360s, which is keyboard's weakest point, but shmups have you CONSTANTLY tapping left and right with a high amount of precision necessary which is pad's weakest point.
You're right, skill level has nothing to do with this, the baseline control capabilities of each method when played at optimal experience does, and that's where pad falls short.
>>
>>137888251
I don't even ever played with keyboard seriously, fucktard, because I know that it's crap. It's just common sense that pad and stick is better, because you don't have to press keys simultaneously to do fucking simple diagonals.

There is a reason why arcade machines have sticks on them, and not fucking keyboard layouts, dumbass. Because playing arcade games with a keyboard fucking sucks.

Either point out a controller where this is actually necessary, because without an example this is just a stupid argument to absurdity.
>>
>>137891549
You still have to move the stick though, just like you have to move an analogue stick or dpad or whatever.

The argument was about keyboard would be better because you have to move your finger manipulate the dpad, instead of having 2 or 3 fingers rested. On a stick you also have to move your fingers instead of having them rested, but this doesn't mean shit.

Also where did anyone ever come up with that keyboard would be better than pad? In general people prefer pad much more keyboard. Keyboard is something which people will laugh at you for, if you say you use it.

There's a big difference between manipulating the controls themselves and moving YOURSELF to the controls before you manipulate them. It's another layer of interaction that needs to take place before your intended input is read by the game.
On stick you don't have to do it at all, on keyboard you need to do it for up and down, on dpad you have to do it for everything.

>In general people prefer pad much more keyboard. Keyboard is something which people will laugh at you for, if you say you use it.

You have to find what makes you your best. Some people concentrate, others try to enter a sort of zen state. This is the most general rule.

For specifics: learn when to use bombs. Don't let them sit stockpiled if you need to use them to save your life, that's what they're there for.

Crimzon Clover is a great starting point for the more traditional side of the genre, so good choice.

The Japanese players stop counting at 10 million, but you could theoretically loop it forever. When you reach 100 million the score resets back to 0.

I'm curious about the record for a single loop though. I know if you do all the scoring tricks you can get around 500,000 per loop.
>>
>>137948342
I figured as much. Unfortunate, but getting to that point is a feat in itself anyway.
>>
>>137950656
Yeah it takes about 6 hours of playing to get to 10 million. I guess they were limited by how long the arcades are open for.

Has anyone ever turned off the sound while playing and listening to your own music while playing? Oddly enough it helps me way too well while playing though a game.
>>
>>137968992
Of course. I can't stand listening to a game's soundtrack for several hundred hours or more. Some games you have to keep on the sfx though, since you might need it for timing cues.

Well the shmup I was playing was Deathsmiles, as Casper. I was off to a fine start, I got 32m from the Forest and was at about 97m after the Volcano. Lake Shore was satisfactory, but then the trouble started at Graveyard when I got hit very early into the power up. It must've shaken me up or something because after that I got hit twice on Port Town and twice on Swamp Wastes, and by that point I just quit.

I want to try again soon though, maybe in an hour or so. If I can just get everything to go right, I'm certain I can far surpass 200m without Death Mode, maybe even setting a new PB in general.

>>137974478
You hit and hold auto C before holding A and continue to hold them together. The timing is different for every enemy and is based on doing C to A+C the right amount of frames before the enemy dies. The empty lock itself also varies on how many chips you get based on how well you get the timing. It makes Ketsui a fucking nightmare game to play for wr i'd imagine.

>>137973082

>>
>>138052087
I did, but like always on 4chan, he just keeps on twisting things however he wants and keeps disagreeing.

According to /v/s logic RPGs are hardcore games, and arcade games are complete casual games, because arcade games are meant to be playe din small sessions, while RPGs are meant for longer sessions.
>>
>>138052227
>because arcade games are meant to be playe din small sessions
haha, even that isn't true. Everybody knows that you have to go all the way with arcade games.
>>
>>138052227
People nowadays seem to confuse difficulty with time spent playing. A game being short or long says nothing about said game's difficult.
>>
>>138052138
Modern "gamers" have this weird attitude that games should be completable on first play through and if anything requires to be memorized ie learnt then it is "artificial" difficulty and cheap. A generation so literally retarded they don't even know what learning entails anymore. I wonder if they'd call learning an instrument in the same vein.

>>138052227
They can't dispute facts and the fact is Rpgs are just time eaters nothing more and your skill level within them will peak quickly whilst ANY shmup to attain a decent score will take years of structured practice and hard work at a much more draining intense demanding pace on the player. The reason rpgs can be played all day is precisely because they are not taxing on the individual and therefore by definition are casual whilst a 3-4 hr grinding session for score will demand so much more concentration, frustration and will power. So correct him on his silly simplified definition of hardcore which apparently in his mind equates to "time spent = hardcore". Getting a WR in a 20/30 min shmup will potentially take you years if even possible within your maximum skill level potential.
>>
>>138052369
Well, according to /v/ they are casual, because most people who played them in arcades obviously just played them casually, and only a very small amount actually tries to go for 1ccs.

For them credit feeding through a shmup means that you finished it basically.

You can also get WRs in other genres by speedrunning them. Does that mean that basically every game is a hardcore game?
I think not. I think what really defines a hardcore game is how difficult it is to play through it, not what kind of self-imposed goals you set yourself in it.

In the same sense a hardcore player is someone who plays difficult to play through games.

>>
>>138067476
Why do they get such weird score numbers in this game? Does the game stop counting your score at that point or what is this? If I wouldn't know better, they would look like hackers to me.
>>
>>138067983
try to think about the meaning of the word "counterstop"
>>
>>138067470
That's one way to look at it, but I posit that, in contrast to exploiting the game for speedruns, the scoring system in shooters, if the game's any good, is planned, often with little tweaks that show deep care put in by the developers, so I don't see it as extraneous to the process of playing the game properly. Still I suppose the distinction is blurred as the scoring tricks in some games are essentially exploitation.
>>
>>138067476
>not even #1
what a fucking casual!
>>
>>138068108
So it really does stop counting score at that point? What kind of shit design is this?
I always thought counterstopping in this game means something like some weird bulletcancel technic or whatever. Like countering an enemy attack or whatever.
>>
>>138068391
yeah it's pretty shitty, which is why some people hope for counterstopless futari ultra on steam (I think you don't reach the counterstop on lower difficulties, not sure though)
>>
>>138068151
Actually I have to correct myself. What really defines a hardcore game is what kind of people the developer of it target with it.

Shmups for example specifically target people who really want to improve in a game, to be able to reach a good score or at least a 1cc. That's they are hardcore to me, because they target people who play for skillfull gameplay.
>>
>>138068723
It's still there but it's only possible to reach it in Ultra. The WR for Maniac is just over a billion, and the WR for Original is just over half that.

I doubt anyone really cares but apparently in the Deathsmiles 360 port, the achievement for getting Sakura's co-op third ending wasn't in the Japanese version, and only added during localization. So that might explain why it's not present in the Steam version.
>>
I read that the counterstop is nowhere near the max possible score you can get in ULTRA

Shit's easy
>>
>>138068821
Okay, I have no problem with that view.
>>
>>138069105

>>
>>138069105
The theoretical max is about 6 billion iirc, but you'd have to do some crazy shit to get that.
Like milking the st2 boss for all 7 cycles without bombing or dying.
>>
>>138067470
This is dumb as fuck and simplifying for the sake of it though. Some speedruns are genuinely hard as fuck in games that would be easy to play casually just because the player has created his own challenge that doesn't make it less hardcore. You don't call Ketsui casual or non hardcore because you can get a 1-all with relative ease you judge it by it's maximum potential or simply differentiate because we are not autistic robots (ok i know dont say it).
>>
>>138067476
Fair enough, it's a shame that replay didnt get revisited on a STG weekly like they said they would.
>>
>>138070684

A Ketsui 1-all is still harder than mind numbingly grinding through Dark Souls or playing through 99% of any other game.

Also I already said that I corrected myself >>138068821

>>
>>138071187
You just think your subjective opinion is fact though and keep sperging it like a proper cunt. You are forgetting many variables and desu i dont believe a ketsui 1-all is harder than dark souls but it depends on the player and what they are used to etc even still you should consider the maximum potential in said games and not just the default.

Sakura's leaving ending is pretty shitty for her.

So is Casper's if you interpret it a certain way. Like that her parents were killed by her kidnappers and now she'll be stuck in the real world with no family to go home to. Doesn't even look like their familiars return to the real world with them either, so she's all alone.

Huh. Len'en 4 did this actually. Thing is, there's bullets that still 1-hit kill you due to random generated stages. They also added upgrades for noobs to have fun I guess? The lower your number of upgrades, the better you are. That being said, the game's unfair as it is so...
>>
>>138078706
Something like this could work I think, or at least be made. There could be like a "story mode" with the cutscenes and dialogues and whatnot, and an "arcade mode" for when you just want to play the game, with the story-related scenes removed. Like how RozenkreuzStilette has, though not a shmup. Actually I think Trouble Witches Neo had something like this, too.

>>138078594
Deathsmiles iOS had an RPG-like equipment system with an HP bar instead of lives. You can increase your stats to lower the amount of damage you take from getting hit, and increase the power of your shots. I thought it was kinda interesting, though I'm not big on how almost all the equipment depends on RNG drops.
>>
>>138067476
Why does it stop at 3?
>>
>>138080501
Because CAVE didn't expect anyone to score that high.
>>
>>138080743
Why would they go out of their way to make it stop at 3 though? I can understand the counter stopping when the most significant digit hits 9, but not 3
>>

Because FFFF FFFF
>>
>>138081061

>>
If I remember my numbers correctly, that's a little short of an unsigned long integer, so I assume they stopped it so it wouldn't overflow or something. My question is why they stopped it there when other games they made use much bigger values than an unsigned long int can hold.
>>
>>138081415
Yeah an 32 bit unsigned integer can go up to 4294967295
>>
>>138081415
Most of their previous games haven't reached 4 bil. Donpachi counterstopped at 99mil, Dodonpachi 760mil, DOJBL 3.5 bil, Mushi 2.3 bil.
The silly scores into the trillions only came about with DFK.
>>

>>

>>
>>138078429
By making good games? Why do you think Gradius or R-Type were so popular back then? Because they were top notch games for their time.

However, shmups never really can become popular. It's in their nature to be niche because they are not casual.

>>

It didn't remove lives though. It just made lives have health, so taking a hit doesn't equal death depending on the shot's strength. It also has regenerating barriers, but they take so freaking long to recharge, you might aswell forget them.
>>
>>138078429
Make them appeal to the lowest common denominator. Turn it into something that the people who actually give a fuck about the genre hate.

>>

>>
>>138083397
So you mean the most popular shmups like Gradius, R-Type, or Ikaruga are actually only known because they crap and shmuppers hate them? I think not.

I think a good start to make shmups more popular would be to get a bit away from this otaku pandering for example and go back to common sci-fi shit, because that would speak to more people, I guess.
>>
>>138083657
here is your (You)
>>
>>138083786
Trends come and go, the people who remain today are the ones who really care and aren't just following a trend.
>>
>>138083657
Touhou does well because the games are basically free and have an absurd fan following. The games themselves play well enough for a one-man development team, but it's obviously not why they're popular. The question asked is how to get the games popular; there's a reason that /jp/ would cry secondary about stupid bullshit until it became a secondary haven itself.

I'd bet the real reason shmups aren't popular anymore is because to the layman they're all the same. Someone going full shmup will notice the intricacies between Futari and Garegga and Gunbird 2 but at the casual level the only thing differentiating them is music and graphics. Also other things, like fighters getting incredibly popular and arcades all but dying (at least in Burgerland).
>>
>>138082739
There are many very good games in the genre, none of them are meme status like Ikaruga is. Plus it's not like the quality even matters, most of the game's "fans" barely even play it.
>>
>>138084373
I a lot of people who play shmups today are also only in it for the otaku stuff. Basically the same like back then probably a lot of people were also just in it because Sci-fi was popular and they got a HR Giger boner from R-Type.

>>138084385
Have you ever even met any of its fans? Most Ikaruga fans are Japanese anyway, so I doubt you have any idea if they actually play it or not.

And no matter if you like it or not, Ikaruga is not a just another good shmup. It may not be your taste, but the game has extraordinary high quality in everything. Similar to why Mushihimesama is popular, because it is of high quality. Not everyone finds otaku anime stuff interesting though, that's probably why it is not as popular as Ikaruga or Gradius.

It's not any actual players taste because aside from production values it's a shit game when you actually play it. Heres what the top chinese player says about it from skykids eurogamer article on the chinese scene....
>>
>>138072543
>I already have 200 hours in Battle Garegga and still get fucking wrecked by Black Heart II.
That's because BH2 has a lot of rng involved and various overlapping pattern combinations.
>>
>>138088146
Oh wow, a single Cave fan hates on Ikaruga. Big surprise!
This article doesn't prove anything.

>There is not a lot of actual shooting going
Ironically Ikaruga is the STG which requires the most precise shooting skills in the whole genre if played on a high level. The person who said this has no idea what he is talking about. Ikaruga is about shooting like no other STG.

Also
>Eurogamer
>>
>>138088517
Not really. The execution also takes a huge part. BH2 is difficult for a lot of reasons.
>>
>>138088783
Haha look at the ikaruga faggot who can't take it. Listen dickhead no one gives a cows cunt about that abysmally overated meme shit game. You will at best find MAYBE 2 or 3 decent Ikaruga players who don't think it's total shit and why the fuck would eurogamer mean shit when the article was by Skykid and features the chinese players who are all top tier including the striker 45 wr holder WC. The guy who said that would fucking destroy you in every game he plays i guarantee it so off you pop back to farm with your faggy loli/pony avatar to post your obnoxious fanboy defense pieces.
>>
>>138088783
Well it's actually possible to pacifist Ikaruga, unlike CAVE games.
>>
>>138089010
I know because i've done it and the rng plays a part for sure as can be seen in high level plays also. The only difference is top players can utilize those deaths as they would be suiciding anyway for the bomb milk on BH2s frag spam.
>>
>>138089208
I'm not read through this retard gibberish. Keep on hating because noone plays your games, you fucking hipster.

>>138089219
It's also possible to be pacifist in Giga Wings 2 or whatever. Go and look up VTF-INos Giga Wing 2 zero score run. This doesn't say anything about if the game is about shooting or not though. It is just a refreshing different way to play the game.
>>
>>138089494
I know it too, because I also did it. RNG is not everything which can make a game difficult.
BH2 is also difficult simply because his patterns are very hard to dodge. Take the vulcan for example... I know how to dodge this, but it's very difficult to execute, even for high level players. The same also goes for his other patterns where he basically just sprays the whole screen full with bullets.
>>
>>138090064
>Keep on hating because noone plays your games, you fucking hipster.
You daft fuck it's your game nobody fucking plays lmfao. Ikarugas popularity is based solely on a easy to grasp gimmick pushed by the gaming media to tards and hardly anyone actually plays it worth a piss. Might aswell sell that squeaky clean sanwa you pretend to use and go eat your mums tampons instead.
>>
>>138090482
>even for high level players.
Nah, it's only difficult if it spawns whilst you're in an awkward position. If the rngs nice i tend to dodge it altogether and sit above him with the options switched to reverse to kill him.
>>
>>138090862
>Nah
Depends on what you consider a high level player. Of course, if you only consider WR players, then they probably can always dodge it, but even people who get usually 10 mill in this game still can't dodge BH2s vulcan properly.
>>
>>138091053
Yeah that's fair enough.
>>
>>138091817
Also, why don't post your score instead of just acting so tough at the game? Considering how you sound you must be really good at this (if you are not just acting).
>>
>>138092510
Who's acting tough? It was a simple discussion about a game so I have no idea where you get that idea from... Christ you spergs really are ridiculous, drowning in insecurities. You're not that Kraut cunt by any chance are you? the satazius guy? If yes you are one sad human being.
>>
>>138093019
>Who's acting tough?
I was saying that BH2s vulcan is difficult, except you are a WR player perhaps, and you agreed with this and said you find it easy to dodge. If that is not acting tough then I don't know, because you basically said you play on a WR level.

It's a weak entry in a mostly good series, the music isn't as good as earlier entries, game just looks funky, you practically have to do that bullet cancelling trick for the entire game, the slowdown is atrocious even by Cave standards, and my personal beef with it is the stupid anime babe mechs.

You fucktard do not realize that even Cave themselve already admitted that Ikaruga is genius and way beyond any game they ever made.

Ikaruga has a myriad of flaws I can't understand why people seem to ignore. Scoring system is frankly crap. Granted, it's not as bad as RSG's scoring where you could only kill 1/3rd of the enemy type per section, and at least it doesn't tie into your ship's power like RSG did (though playing Ikaruga for survival is extremely dull). But its chaining means you have to perfectly shoot in the order Treasure wants you to, unless you want to break your chain by shooting whatever you feel like (or the even lamer option of having to let enemies pass you by since you're afraid of getting a chain broken). So prepare to play like a robot if you ever want to score well in Ikaruga, where routes are even more strict and less free than Dodonpachi. It also has the infamy of being called super difficult because the game gives you absolutely no items once, so the only way to get extends is first learning the ins/outs of the game in order to score well. But by that point you should be able to no-miss Ikaruga, so what was the point then? Now the polarity mechanics are awful because swapping color invalidates practically all bullet patterns in the game, since you can just absorb everything in your way rendering whatever looks impossible meaningless. This seems neat at first until it becomes a chore to soak up all bullets on screen to raise your score, after you cope with it making survival play a boring cakewalk. Boss designs are rubbish save for the first and last guys. Mooks have no life to them; most don't even shoot at you and simply drift away. This plus the chaining has it feeling more like playing a puzzle game instead of an actual shump. Not to mention how it's grossly overrated due to its OST and graphics (if you dig sepia tones making backgrounds look like dogshit) by people who hardly even play shumps. Ikaruga is just a terrible game that for some reason has a cult following that loves to bitch at you if you dare to question the quality of their beloved masterpiece.

Still probably going to scrap this run because I fucked up big time on Graveyard and ended up 20-some million points short of what I should've had. Getting kind of tired now though, so I'll probably try again this weekend. Thanks for the motivation to put in some work tonight though. Getting this screenshot. Do you need more of a reason to dislike Ikaruga than the bullet absorption gimmick, the garbage 3x chaining system, the painfully mindless bullet patterns, and level structuring so insipid that it would make R-Type blush? Like I would rather there be no static level designs at all if it meant I didn't have to weave through and blow up slow, ugly boxes. Once you get past the pretentious overtones you have a boring, poorly designed STG.

>>138146550
My favorite rank system is in Gradius V.

Every upgrade adds some rank, and there's no way to lower it, and since it's an infinite looper, shit will get real crazy. And whenever you die and get the same upgrades again, that also adds more rank to the overall rank.
>>
>>138146550
On paper it sounds like a pretty cool take on the YGW rank system. You can't reverse the rank, all you can do is slow it down by playing in a certain way. I haven't played much PS so I don't know if it works out as well as that in practice, but I'm guessing not.

The best rank system is in the European version of Battle Garegga.
Almost everything you do adds to the rank, and there is a way to lower it (by suiciding), but the game doesn't give you any extends, except for 1 (so 3 in total), which means the game is basically not beatable except perhaps you are a god at it.
>>

credit feeding gaijin do not need extend

Honestly, I personally even find this version better. The suiciding is really the thing which annoys me the most about Garegga.

>>138147318
Of course they don't, because they don't have to, they have to play for score, but idk... if one really practices this, it might be possible with 3 extends?

2 Loops, the loop is brutal especially 2-5. Great game btw far better than the original and probably the most underated game in the Gradius franchise.

A top chinese player who has no reason for bias whatsoever who plays both and draws a personal conclusion one that is btw mirrored by many decent players is biased? Shoot down the red UFOs, it cancels bullets and destroys any invaders that get caught in the explosion. Or cheese it by not shooting at all if you're not playing for survival to make the enemies shoot way less bullets and just use the shield for extra safety.

Delet hiscore.dat. You don't need it anyway. It's annoying especially also because it saves scores when watching replays.

Try actually playing for score next time. Stage 4 is the hardest stage to score decently in.

Also, any decent player knows Ikaruga is not that hard to play for survival. At least not in normal mode. But Cave games are also not that hard in normal modes.

Just because there is a female in the story (which you hardly even see in the game) doesn't mean it's waifushit.

My Ikaruga score could be better, but I don't want to focus too much on only a single game. I'm still a beginner. It's over 25 mill atm though.

(You) can ignore the females in Cave games as well, they don't have an effect on gameplay.

Why aren't you scoring on Hard since you act like normal is too easy like Cave games ITT?

That's not true for a majority of Cave games. Also, nice moving the goalpost when someone posted an Ikaruga waifu.

>Because playing for score is totally different than playing for survival?
Not really. Even survivalfags do a bit of chaining when they play. Ikaruga was designed around its contrived scoring system, all the way down to its robotic and monotonous enemies.
