If you can, I'd suggest getting MGS1, although settling for the MGS HD collection which has MGS2, 3, PW and the MSX metal gears would suffice.
Starting with TPP for Metal Gear to me would be like starting the Terminator Series with Genysis. It might have the best graphics and action sequences, but it's a horrible introduction and won't have you seeing what other people saw when they fell in love with the series.

The entire drama of Metal Gear started with a deliberate miscommunication on the part of the US government and The Boss. That domino'd into a misinterpretation of her will by Snake and Zero, etc etc.

The individual characters of this series don't matter as much as they do when they interact. Venom probably has the most internalized and singular struggle with identity (along with Solidus and Raiden), but otherwise characters are predominately used and defined by their interactions with others, specifically when those interactions involve a misunderstanding of intention or goal.
