>harder than anything
Unless you let him get out those drones then yeah, I agree with you. But normally the only thing you have to watch out for is those blue lines during the first phase.

Stage 3 boss is a cunt though. Those random bullets on the first phase get me from time to time. And those lasers during the second phase can be hard to predict sometimes. Best advice I can give you is that those giant bullets the boss spews out after it unfolds are always static. The safe spots are pretty generous when you learn them.

>>
If you die in Gradius is it best to just start again from Stage 1?
>>
>>137727317
Well I have that shmupmame pack from the OP and most of the notable shmups from steam.

As of late I tried Gradius, R-Type, Battle Garegga and Strikers 1945.

I'm thinking of mostly sticking with Strikers, I'm not used to horis at all and Garegga's ranking is alien to me.
>>
>>137727745
No, in Gradius 1 it's always possible to recover after dying. In later stages you need to have a pretty good plan in order to do it though.
>>
>>137727784
Try out Darius Gaiden or 19XX. Neither of them are too tough. Darius Gaiden is one of the games that got me into the genre.
>>
>>137727994
Yeah I'm sure it's possible, but crusing through everything with 4 options + laser is so much easier
>>
>>137728037

Hey there's a good idea. I remember playing a bit of that and loving it. Only got to that Angler shit on the easy route though, those rings of bullets and lasers were crazy.

That's the US version, localized as Nemesis.
I'd recommend getting the Japanese version, the rank in Nemesis gets pretty dumb.

Here's the first one, luckily I made it to the next checkpoint before dying.

The next checkpoint is definitely the hardest recovery in loop 1, it took a lot of tries.
>>

Here's the second, the hardest part to get through.
I die at the end, but once you make it to the 4 hatches, you hit another checkpoint and going from there to the end is much easier.
>>
>>137732998
Nicely done. This probably could help me to finally get through that part myself.
>>
>>137733535

I think my version of the game is harder. Is this perhaps the Gradius Nemesis version?
When I tried to recover there, the enemies where constantly aiming at me
>>
>>137740676
Either that or you have the difficulty dipswitch set higher than default.

Nemesis's rank is just a more extreme version of Gradius' rank. When the rank is low the bullets are almost comically slow, when the rank starts to get high it's like the whole game is on crack.
>>
>>137740867
I was not talking about my game, but about your game. And I also wasn't talking about nemesis, but Gradius Nemesis (there is also an other Nemesis).
However, no matter what I do, I just can't recover in this part. And it's always exactly where I die in this game.
>>
>>137742763
I'm playing 'Japan, ROM version', all default settings
>>
There's another version of Nemesis, called nemesisuk in MAME. It doesn't have the changes and is just a nameswap as far as I can tell.
Option is also called Multiple on the powerup bar.
>>
>>137743140
Do you recommend going through the last stage with laser or with double?
I also never know if I have to stay at the front or at the back of the screen there, since so many enemies come from the back.

I tried to doing the trick with the laser otpion placement, but I just can't get this t work.
>>
>>137743495
The laser trick is actually pretty hard. I'd just take double and try to kill everything as fast as possible. Replacing your shields can get tricky with so much going on so it's best to have a plan for that. Letting your old shield touch the walls to get rid of it is more reliable than getting bullets to hit it.

If you really want to play the game, you will credit feed no matter if you get continues or not.
But I find it good that not everyone is allowed to see the whole game, although they completely suck at it.
>>
The problem with checkpoints is that checkpoints completely kill the momentum of the game. Respawns throw you back in the action, which can be very overwhelming but I prefer it because it feels less tedious to at least continue making progress, as opposed to having to redo sections until I do it perfectly AND with fewer resources at my disposal then when I fucked up initially.

It's not like I won't be playing the game for dozens of hours anyway, making me replay a small section because I suck is just insulting.
>>
I feel like games with health bars should have checkpoints (like Megaman) while one-hit-death games should not have them (like Contra).
>>
>>137794348
Continues get more coins out of people. They want to keep seeing more and the timer pushes them to make a quick decision and put in another credit.
>>
>>137794575
Why is it insulting? Doing recovering in Gradius or R-Type is actually pretty fun. If you manage to survive a difficult part although you actually died like 3 times, it just feels as if you cheated your way through, but if you recovered 3 times, and then finally bĀ“beat it, it just feels good.

The thing with more modern shmups is just that they often throw way too much shit at the player, that's why a checkpoint system wouldn't work anymore, but back then games were actually still well balanced and fair.

>Why is it insulting?
It feels less like I'm playing a game and more like I'm being disciplined for not doing well on a test. "You didn't get it right, do it again and this time you'd better get 100%!" I'll admit fully that it's because I'm a whiny, casual babby who should just get good, but it completely saps my will to keep playing when one mistake can potentially end my run even from a survival perspective.

The game is good, the PC port is kinda mediocre. My biggest issue is that I can't get it to run when I'm offline, and apparently it has issues with sticks also.

From a business standpoint it actually might be better to implement continues, but from a gameplay standpoint, I find checkpoints better. And that's what counts to me.

You responded specifically to the business aspect of it.
And if you're not the same person, why would you reply?

I've almost got the 1cc, and now I can stop stressing about the score.

To make clear that I don't care about if the game makes more money or not. I care about the gameplay, not how popular it is.

Also, it's not even clear if punishing checkpoints make less money. Arcade players like it if the game is challenging, why else would they play arcade games. It's only in the western versions that the games have no checkpoints mostly, because in there it's just full of casuals even in arcades.

Wow, I actually feel really good right now and I didn't even clear http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=35036

Yea, that actually describes why I like it. Shmups are not just games for entertainment, they are a discipline to master at, and checkpoints fit to to this, imo.

Wow, great mechanic guys!

Someone can just as easily strawman games with checkpoints, anons.
>>
>>137799347
That's not a strawman though, it's a clear fault with the system.

The MOSS Raidens are shit since they got rid of infinite loops.

Raiden DX is where it's at.

People who deny the existence of talent also happen to be the best players. I know why: it's because they have it, so they don't know what it's like not to have talent.

I know that it's in my genes to be better than you.
>>
>>137799819
No it isn't. Games have power ups that bounce off the edges of the screen.

I've lately started thinking that at least regarding gameover/continue, checkpoints make much more sense at home consoles than the arcade, where you're not putting in more money to see the rest of the content. Continuing from the spot you were at may be better for practice, but for more casual play, it's more like "skip the challenge" button.
