Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

So Agartha.
Did you remove the nostart tag from all caves or just one of them?

I mean more of them makes your starting position less predictable, but on the other hand I sure hope I don't start in one of them.
>>
>>137612217
Starting in a cave doesn't matter much, other than the darkvision thing if you happen to wind up defending your capital (in which case there are bigger issues) As long as they have a sufficient amount of adjacencies, they're perfectly fine.

Supposedly they get a 10% income bonus.
>>
>>137612927
But don't caves have shitty income to begin with, which means that bonus might just be cancelling it out?
>>
>>137613280
Capital base income is independent of terrain.
>>
>>137613280
Income is based on population, which is based on terrain - except for capitals, which is always close to 30k pop.
>>
>>137612927
For agartha it also lets them cast a slew of cave only spells which they are intended to be able to cast from their cap. AY Agartha can testify to how useful that was.
>>
>>137612217

The only province that I removed nostart from was 100, as the location seemed decently far from other caves, had decent connections that I feel are balanced (Some other spots linked to 2 or 3 farm provinces which I think would generate perhaps a bit too much income to be balanced) and I wanted 5 spots so it was at least a little unpredictable. All the other ones I specifically selected provinces for that did not have the nostart tag. Those are provinces that anyone could have started at regardless.

I also believe that most nations do not start in caves unless specifically set to do so, like Agartha and perhaps Xibalba.

The more you know. I'm gonna get rammed in this game aren't I?
>>
>>137614993

One thing I am not sure of, is if cave+mountain tags give a significant resource bonus. I left the mountain tags on as they also have the penalty of hindering movement, and the map seems to have some design for that as it also employs border mountains (which don't hinder) in strategic places.
>>
>>137614993
If it's alright with everybody I'll use it and start the game.

>>137615161
Oh wow I guess that means you can recruit more dudes with shortswords that can't damage anything with half-decent armour.

It's not like Agartha lacks resources with your national mages giving resource bonus.
>>
>>137614249
Its really just the cave grubs for early expansion, which only EA Agartha truly needs (because your only other option for EA Agartha as a frontline is Pale Ones . . . ). The +10% income is for all Agartha though, and it certainly helps.

For EA Agartha a vibrant cave network is what helps the most. Making Olms effectively rec anywhere is really dumb.
>>
>>137616197

True, with critical mass of Reanimators I never have to worry about resources anyway.

Thanks for using the map, I'm glad I get some money and in the event things go south, I can at least take advantage of my poor-eyesight darkvision dudes to defend.

I'll post the link for it here again, for convenience:

>Its really just the cave grubs for early expansion, which only EA Agartha truly needs (because your only other option for EA Agartha as a frontline is Pale Ones . . . ).
I expanded just fine with pale ones and a couple of mindblasters thrown in. If you rush earth meld (which you should) then you can add earth earth readers to your armies very quickly as well.

Ended up being one of the bigger nations last game.
>>
>>137617136
This depends a lot on the level of indies you encounter. In All Yesterdays I needed Mind Blaster support on an awake Dom 9 Erf Snek just to break out of my cap ring (my province choices were 60 Cavemen, around 100 Heavy Cav, Heavy Infantry, and Knights, 50 Abysian Infantry with several fire mage support, and 50ish light+heavy infantry with multiple cloud mages and wind masters)

>>
Can someone give me some insight into the mind of a chain-staler? If you're so done with a game that you just don't give a fuck then why not just go AI? The only reason to keep staling I can think of is if you get stabbed or because you actually want the turns to take the full 24 hours.
>>
>>137620296
Real life shit or they just stop giving a fuck because they're shitters.
>>
>>137620014
If it's not going to disappoint everyone else, that'd probably be for the best.
>>
>>137620763
I think everyone who's still in this game is pretty used to it by now, unfortunately.
>>
>>137620296
First the game goes south. You get demoralized, you don't want to think about it. So you stall one turn because you forget or because you just can't get yourself to do it. The next turn is harder still. A couple of turns pass, and by then, you're too embarrassed and ashamed of yourself to go back and look at it and think about it even for long enough to set yourself to AI. You just push it away and try to forget any of it ever happened.

Totally not speaking from experience there. But that was like a year ago and I've gotten better about it since then.
>>
Game is started.
48 hour limit for the first turn so that word can get around that it started. Afterwards 24 hours until scripting kicks in.

Remember, game was supposed to be a slow one, so I don't mind increasing the turn timer. early if needed.

I'll be busy until for the next 24 hours, so I might already need a 1-3 hour extension if the turn moves along quickly.

I have no idea how this happened. I have not even touched those provinces, but it must be something I did.

I'm really sorry everyone, shows how much I know about editing a fucking map.

Just to avoid any issues, maybe just use the original Orania. I'll make do without caves.
>>
Unstarted, fixed the map, restarted.
Lef me know if you encounter any more oddities.
>>
So does this version of the map still have the special sites and if so how do I look them up in the file.
>>
>>137627428

Thanks admin. Sorry for my fuckup. I am at a loss how it happened. The only steps I made were to load Orania in the map editor, select only those 5 provinces that I looked at in a singleplayer game and check the "caves" box, and unchecked "nostart" on province 100. Then I saved it as Orania_Caves, edited the file in notepad and simply changed the name and description so it wouldn't be called "Orania" in the map list.

Maybe it redrew borders for some reason or I messed up in notepad.

>>137628027
I believe the admin is using the original, default, Orania map now without any edits since I fucked that version up with weird province connections somehow. But yes both versions still have the special sites. I don't know how to look them up, though the majority of sites are in provinces named after them (Skull Temple is on the 209 island province called Skull Temple, etc.) That's one way of finding them.

After playing against and with jotunheim for a bit, I think they're a pretty damn solid nation. Their only real weaknesses is that your main battle mage is cap only and their troops aren't amazing. But you can just replace that with skelespam and you super regenerating communion slaves that can support pretty big communions without issue. Also, fairly good access to most of the stronger magic paths in the game.

Indeed, but you can get pretty good mileage out of them once you stick them into communions.

Also, in some roles you can substitute an N or D random Skratti to a Gygja.

I guess it would become a huge problem if you lose a big battle, as you can't replenish mage losses very quickly.

A bunch of A1s to B1 to spread out your searching and eventually upgrade to Storm Demon summoning?

I may also have access to Lamias depending on booster trading and empowering, so I could use those for searching and put my blood empowers on the E caster especially, though that's not the most efficient use of N gems. Not that I have more effective uses of all this spare Nature so it's probably worth it anyway.

If it's a very large meme game you might as well go for vampires since you'll probably end up with dozens of vampire lords by the time anything happens. Vampires on their own might not do too much to super lategame demon armies but at least it'll be extremely annoying trying to take anything in your dominion.
>>
Which era C'tis is best C'tis?
>>
>>137658007

Depends entirely on what nation you play. But in a completely general sense, unless the map is riddled with rivers I'd go for vampires, as getting just one Lord means you are ensured of more, and you can use them to bloodhunt and to do suicide runs on anyone in your dominion.

Gotta admit, this is the first memegame where so many nations could potentially contend for victory. Stalewarriors had only bats and jews in the endgame, and All Yesterdays was stomped on by Agartha. LA Ctis has a pretty big money problem. Their forts need temples on top of labs. And their mages are bloody expensive for how many of them you need to be effective.

Skellies versus B9 sacreds. Who wins? Find out tomorrow morning!

Sure, you'll occasionally kill one when you get hit, but they're so weak individually that it won't make a difference to the outcome.

Okay okay what if instead of just horde of skeletons.
There was AD crosspath for horde of flying skeletons, and horde of skeletal archers (maybe take away the banefire bow)
An ED crosspath for horde of triarus/skeletons with shields and just heaps of skeletons.
A WD crosspath for horde of ambidextrous skeletons,
An FD crosspath for horde of skeletons with baneburst attack.
An SD crosspath for horde of ethereal skeletons.
A BD crosspath for horde of damage reversal skeletons.
An ND crosspath for horde of 10% regen skeletons

I want more variety in skeleton summons.
>>
>>137689884

>>
>>137689884

>>137690348

>>137690547
>cool but they're so shit nobody uses them
MRN evocations are a bit of a niche. And the niche is already covered perfectly well by shadow blast. I don't know how you'd fix that.

Death could do with getting more variety out of death spells but I wanted specifically midgame and early-late game crosspaths that don't get eclipsed by horde of skeletons. Since when I see people play all the nations with D2 access it sort of looks the same, regardless of the crosspaths they have.

Yeah, I could probably admin a few more games, if there's interest in any new ones (summod, maybe?). Though I'm not sure why should it be me, I don't think I'm doing anything unusual. Are admins in /domg/ games so bad lately?
>>
>>137690984
>MRN evocations are a bit of a niche. And the niche is already covered perfectly well by shadow blast. I don't know how you'd fix that.
Shadow blast is the only evocation people use because it's the only one which has a decent effect. Just buff the other death evocations and that issue will vanish.
>>
>>137692709
How would you buff them? Their goal is to do damage not create more undead so if you made them better than shadow blast at that then nobody would use shadow blast.
I guess if you made them a cheap alternative to shadow blast ie not needing a bajillion gems.
>>
>>137691432
Oh, and thanks for volunteering as an AI setter. Would you mind posting an e-mail address so I can send you the turn if we can't find a sub in, say, 24 hours?

I feel like an idiot because I forgot to write it down, but who was it that ordered the Rune Breaker?

I'll figure it out once you send in the gems, but I hate not having my records straight.
>>
>>137693027
Well, for one example, you could change blast of unlife to D2, increase fatigue to 30, and remove MRN. That would be a decent evocation, but the uses wouldn't overlap with shadow blast much.

Shadow Bolt and Bolt of Unlife could probably be made D1 (MRN, single target, not great precision - compare to frozen heart or stellar cascades). D1 can't even cast shadow blast, so that wouldn't overlap either.

It's AN and MRN right now. We're talking about a free, D2 unresistable AOE evoblast if you remove the MR check. I love it.

>>137694415
