To that one guy last thread who couldn't decide what game to play, I'm actually having plenty of fun playing R2 vanilla after 600 hours in Attila.
It's a fine game, and even after months (well, a year by now) of only experiencing the game as the target of derision on /twg/, I haven't had my enjoyment of the game significantly harmed.
Sure, I miss some basic features from vanilla Attila, but it's fine enough.

To be fair to Mannfred, Nagash absolutely threw him under the fucking bus. In a conciliatory gesture, Nagash offered the one who killed the Everchild to resurrect him to the other Incarnates. Archaon's the typical chaos undivided/Black Legion option. The quintessential chaos leader, like Abaddon the Armless. Can't go wrong with him and I'm fairly sure 9 out of 10 people will pick him first.
Kholek's a bit surprising, since I've always kinda thought dragon ogres were kinda silly, but having a monster of a lord could be fun.
Sigvald's another surprise for me, since Slaanesh has always had a fairly minor presence in Fantasy Battles. If you can build a Slaanesh-themed army of glamorous hedonists to go with him, it could be pretty cool.

I play the game because it's exactly that: a game. I enjoy the mixture of turn based campaign and real time battles but I don't give the slightest fuck about history or historical figures.
The only TW game where I really cared about the persons involved was Shogun 2 because of Sengoku Basara/Samurai Warriors.

Here's my advice:
Kill off the Suebi. Try getting rid of the African tribes or befriend them if their traits make them stable neighbors. Abandon some provinces in Gaul if you may but don't lose that gold. Keep one stack patrolling in Spain until things quiet down. Keep a stack in Salona. Keep a stack in North Italy as well. Build your territories up until they have firstly: food>sanitation>happiness, and then you can focus on income. Research for better spearmen, use the basic spearmen for anything, they soak up arrows like they're nothing in testudo formation.

Think of a simplified version of something like Civ or Europa Universalis, a turn based campaign map in which you manage your faction, settlements and characters.
The primary difference is that the battles in Total War are played as real-time battles in which you manually control every units and they generally act as a real unit of soldiers would on a real infantry.
If you wanna get started I'd say that the best place in the franchise to start off is Shogun 2 as the way it plays is very 'rock-paper-scissors-y' and it is really polished and generally without some of the frustrating elements that some other entries in the franchise have.
If you don't like Feudal Japan you could try out Rome 2, it works pretty well for beginners too.
The newest entry is Attila but that one is a bit complicated and hard and I wouldn't recommend it for newer players.
