god forbid people not hang around 24/7 to talk about an obscure genre of pc games. maybe wait until the people who actually sleep at night have a chance to drink their morning coffee?

I honestly quite like the speed of this general, as you can carry on an actual conversation without being lambasted by a metric shitton of embarrassing lewd fanart.
>>
>>136884697
Couldn't agree more. People are too prone to cry "ded" when a general is slow even for a short while. /rlg/ has been through lulls like this before where we were almost going past page 10 regularly. Until the last few weeks, we were actually moving incredibly quickly, so that might be why the difference is so shocking to some people.

Usually when we say a game is shit, we've either A. haven't played it at all and decided it was stupid for some inane reason (I think most of us never really gave Dredmor a try for example) or B. played it to death, from older version to new and cannot comprehend looking at it without seeing its flaws. People in this category might powergame the fuck out of it, ruining even further. (this is where cata falls, and you'll see people STILL playing with 12 str/dex. People who played Dredmor will rightfully bitch about the UI and what not here too.)

I like DDA a lot and play it almost every day, I might be the only person in this thread to play it that much but here's my input.

Most roguelikes have the problem where the more you learn to play the game the less fun it gets after a while but dda takes that to the extreme.

Once you learn to survive the first week, you can start a new character with any handicap and never die. The game just becomes a roguelike walking simulator where you explore different areas. DDA is far more of sandbox than other roguelikes which would be nice but there's nothing to fucking do in it.

Get katana, level up melee a little, have a backup shotgun for hulks/shockers, now unkillable god. What are your options?

>make a super death vehicle, doesn't mean anything because you're already an unkillable god
>get tons of bionics, doesn't mean anything because you're already an unkillable god
>mutate yourself to hell, doesn't mean anything because you're already an unkillable god
>farm artifacts, doesn't mean anything because you're already an unkillable god

It's only real longevity is if you like roleplaying a LOT like I do
>>
>>136893631
>DDA is far more of sandbox than other roguelikes which would be nice but there's nothing to fucking do in it.
Dwarf Fortress is pretty much the same shit.
>>
>>136893791
Yeah, but DDA doesn't even have nearly the same complexity of dorf fort.
The real problem of dorf fort is still, like DDA, the fact that you can get a fortress running anywhere after you git gud and that people often mod or try to have fun in other ways.

Dwarf fortress is an objectively better game though, since it's got a shitton more stuff to do.
>>
>>136893791
If we're talking about adventure mode, it's sandboxy like DDA but plays nothing like it.

>>136894247
They both have that problem. WIthout a real objective you don't feel the reward of getting good, you don't have anything to put it towards.

>Dwarf fortress is an objectively better game though, since it's got a shitton more stuff to do.
From a technical standpoint it's definitely better but they're completely different. Cataclysm is modern day, the vehicle and crafting systems are absolutely incredible and no other roguelike offers anything like it.

1. Once you've played for 4 seasons, you don't know what to do anymore.
You have plenty of food, water is easy to get and the enemies aren't threatening.
At day 100, you keep killing the same zombies that you've beaten at day 1, it's boring.
In other words, cataclysm is lacking end game content.
Yes, I know we have Mine or Ancient Temple, but the possibility of you to see one in your playthrough is almost 0, oh and the enemies there are joke too.

2. NPC
Do the developers actually play Cataclysm-DDA ?
Dynamic NPC either rob you of your posessions or shoot you in the face with shotgun / flamethrower.
They're annoying to the point you'll play better if you turn them off in the option.

3. Bloat
There are too many items, ex : you can find 1000+ different kind of guns with barely different stats.

Nice. You can probably do without the rioter mask/dust mask unless you're in winter. I imagine your dude takes forever to get his stamina back after killing just 1 or 2 zombies. Try to make a toolbelt soon. They let you store a hammer, so you can always have a hammer/screwdriver without taking up more than 1 volume. Nice kit though.

>>
>>136914837
Bone armour helmet covers eyes/head/mouth for some amount of encumbrance. I think 15, if I remember right. Its a really great piece of gear, but you really can't stack a lot of mouth protection with it since you'll run out of stamina really quickly and get swarmed.
>>

>>

>Made it from 48 tainted bones
That irks my autism. The lore states that zombie bones are spongy and brittle.
What's the recipe? Do you just duct tape the whole thing together and call it a helmet?
>>
>>136915650

>>
>>136916604
I imagine it with a thick bandana covering the mouth, with the two horns meeting at either side of the jaw and going down towards the chin. Bone covers the nose, but leaves the mouth relatively uncovered because its already hard to breath through a thick bandana. I also imagine plastic being adhered to the eye sockets, and some sort of brow ridge to keep light out of your eyes. I'm just shit at paint. I'd draw it with a pencil for you guys if I could, but I don't have a scanner.
>>
>>136916891
I suggest playing a vine stalker monk if you really want to start out, they're pretty easy for a new guy. Magic is really not that easy to master early on. It's better to hit the dudes.
Run away from orc priests (they are really strong for their depth and can cast a spell that will kill you quickly if you're in line of sight) and orc priests are really bad too. Just generally run away if you see them until you've got at least 7 levels in unarmed. Put points in fighting so that you don't die to a single orc priest.

Strong tabber with flavor, lets him experiment with gods rather than "MASH DAT TAB BUTTON IF YOU LIKE DIS TROGLODYTE. WHERE MY BROS AT?" Low HP puts the proper fear in him and the bite/regen with shield wombo combo lets him deal with a lot of situations where a MiBe might run out of gas. Apples and Oranges, only the apple is an overripe Red Delicious and the orange is a perfect blood orange.

>>136917895
Yo, make sure your little Vs learns how to use shields. Its an integral part to becoming FUCKING INVINCIBLE, because it lets you draw combat out longer than it should. Longer combat = More HP regen'd and more bite procs which means MORE MP for spirit shield. Once you get it going, you have a lot more endurance than even a MiBe might have.

ahhhh, now this is much better

I should save some ommel urine and such for the next time I find a wand of mirroring

actually, if I break a wand of mirroring, does it work like a wand of polymorph, effecting a 3x3 square of tiles around me?

I only intend to kill people that deserve it, I'm not a sociopath.

The thieve's girdle increases Agi and Dex at the same time, and I tend to take really negligible damage from mines (usually none) with cloak+2 rings of fire res. So I decided on the thieve's girdle. All my valuables are safely tucked away in chests too, so it's usually fine. I just have to search a bit before I pick up wands and scrolls and potions, which is a minor inconvenience at the worst.

The crazy thing is that I'm doing this well without having found any wishes. That's the main reason I'm still stuck with amulet of vanity.

Okay so last night in the previous thread, someone told me that on DDA you could do a reach attack by using the (f)ire command with a spear, but I couldn't get that shit to work and had to resort to using my sling to slowly kill the pair of zombies I aggro'd thinking that I could easily kill them using the spear with minimal risk.

What am I doing wrong that the reach attack isn't working? I have a knife spear equipped, and I tried both (f) AND (F), both of which didn't appear to do a damn thing.

O-oh... I assume I can transfer my world/save if I download a newer version. Would just copy-pasting the save folder into the newer version's location be all I need to do? Seems like that would work for the world at the very least, but is the character attached to the world save as well?

Just copy the new version into the old folder.

From my understanding that's sort of how it works. A successful guardian build is usually either part wizard or part stealth build.

I've seem posts in past /rlg/ threads mention the build and the invisibility charm build.

I have no idea. It was mentioned here recently that if you enchant the charm enough, you can have the guardian out all the time, but even then you can't actually kill anything without a lot of effort and still need to deal with ranged attackers.

I guess you hope for conjuration or obstruction or something.

That looks like a disaster waiting to happen. A disaster called Sherarax. You know that high stats attract uniques and make monsters tougher.
Those stats definitely like golden eagle feather to me anyway, not ommel hair. You definitely don't want high-level prosthetics, because they spike your danger level worse than anything.
The real problem of prostethics is that they don't heal, so that limb you worked so hard to get is gonna get cut off or worse, become unusable (grey) and make you unable to use it, without the "perk" of being able to regrow another, as you'd do if it had been removed.

hey guys, remind me again why we can't just remove magic points, and, get this, cast spells with satiation?

no lets go a step further, why not remove satiation, and just change experience into "Essence" and use that for casting and fighting and regenerating damage.

In fact lets get rid of strength, dexterity, and intelligence too, because Essence can cover those.

All we need is HP, Essence, and Skills.

we can call the game "Demon's Essence" and make it a not-a-roguelike even (not a roguelike if it's not free)

Possible while following the spirit of the challenge, if you maintain solid play throughout all of midgame to conserve resources.

Alternately possible while violating the spirit of the challenge, if you go full degenerate and scum abyss or pan for resources.

Most importantly, though, going for 15 runes on a MuMo would likely end up becoming so tedious that just trying for it would flagrantly violate the purpose of having fun with the challenge. You might be able to do it and have fun with it, but keeping it contained to 6 runes was a good idea to begin with as it prevents people from becoming bored out of their minds from the sustained tedium that would be necessary to abuse the broken combat systems for long enough to actually finish all 15 runes.

Honestly, it was a bad idea to go for 7 in the first place as it setup a falsely implied difference between future wins. 6 is enough.

Pretty much.

Throwing nets are always fucking tight to have, and the starting throwing skill also works when you get a blowgun, which means that big targets with low EV become much less of a problem. Just curare, net, and needle. Cheese those hill giants like a true rogue.

A shield is...okay.
>>
>>136958013
How useful are blowguns to any char this isn't a stabber?
>>
>>136956957
>at what point would I want to start learning spells
On a Fighter? Possibly never, if you can manage to get a wand of haste early enough.

More typically though, you want to train your weapon offense first, then some defenses, only last working on utility spells. If you find a book with low level utility spells like swiftness or regen early, it can be worth getting them online immediately. If you're just going for castable haste so that you can spam haste through mid and lategame instead of relying on wand charges, then you probably want to aim for getting Haste castable somewhere between Lair:6 to D:15 to Lairbranch1:$, depending on species aptitude and your choice of body armour.

>I know stuff like blink, apport and haste are all useful, but what else?
The thing about spells in DCSS is that they're pretty much all useful. They're also pretty much all powerful enough that you can sink as much experience into them as you wish and still remain a viable character.

Some staples of meleedudes would be the defensive enchantment buffs like swiftness haste regen, but also things like apportation and blink and even stuff like conjure flame or low level summons if you want to use them.

Generally I wholeheartedly recommend the purity of unarmed combat, but whatever floats your boat.

>>
>>136958291
>How useful are blowguns to any char this isn't a stabber?
Poison needles are enough to kite ogres and giants and gastronoks and the majority of early uniques and any other speed 10 monster to death. Poison needles also let you take the spider rune for free, with lots of ammo collecting tedium.

Curare is enough to flat out murder uniques and other nasties that you really shouldn't engage.

Both poison and curare needles require zero skill investment to work.

Blowguns are absurdly broken, and if you're playing to win you should always be picking one up along with any poison and curare you find.

You can use swiftness to make free space between your dude and a dangerous pack without bothering with energyscumming. As long as Crawl allows stairdancing, that one space is enough to freely escape by the nearest < (or > in a pinch).

Swiftness isn't strictly necessary if you know how to energyscum or cornerstealthbreak or sizeabuse to make space for escapes, but it makes things easier with minimal skill investment and can enable resource-free escapes against things above speed 10.

It's not exactly rare to find poison needles in groups of 20 or more, and that's just from the floor, not counting blowgun kobolds who usually carry 10 or more. You barely notice their mulching if you have decent melee and don't rely purely on blowguns, and Trolls have some of the strongest melee in the game. It's already possible and common to use blowguns with no training or enchantments as a crutch and let them carry you through lair or more, nevermind fucking buffed blowguns whose effect scales with skill over 8 and enchantments.

Making a roguelike, what do you think about brogue-esque mouse movement vs. numpad vs. vi keys? I feel like mouse is far more efficient for selecting targets at least.
>>
oh yeah also because crawl doesn't have enough swingy RNG the poison needle "duration" (whatever that means) was changed from 6+(1d8-1) to 1d(3+skill*2+enchant)-1

literally everything in crawl is 1d(number) except for high-level conjurations, for some retarded reason

vi keys always and forever

no one uses the mouse unless you're planning to have your audience mainly be 19 year old gamergrills on twitch

Numpad master race.
>>
>>136965109
mouse is secondary at best.

it can be ok for shit like aiming at or fast-moving to specific far-away tiles but having the mouse as the primary/only way to move is incredibly shitty

vikeys is masterrace, but if you're already implementing vikeys then adding numpad to appease the untermenschen isn't any extra work

Mouse is only more efficient for aiming if you don't add options like "Target next monster", which a lot of roguelikes have

Most people who've played traditional roguelikes for long are used to and are quicker while using the keyboard. If you want a more casual audience you pretty much need some amount of mouse control, though.

OK, next question, is pure ascii really important to anyone, or are you happy with minimalist symbolic tiles? I don't trust myself to make anything but garbage as far as normal tiles go, and characters alone feels limiting.
>>
mouse in Brogue is useful for aiming around corners like this:

@.....
####d

but really they should fix that buy giving it DCSS-style aiming that does that sort of shit automatically

If it does not use ASCII it is not a roguelike.

Also, I'm afraid of how they'll adress that once they realize how OP they've made trolls

If they nerf their throwing apt, then trolls will become the o-tab race, where you can do absolutely nothing except o-tabbing if you're interested in optimal gameplay, with throwing only an option if you plan on doing extended

If they nerf blowguns, people will just stop using them and they'll just do their usual "our horrible and clueless approach to game design and tendency to put our many different, shortsighted and ephimeral current "visions" for the game above all else has made this previously fun and useful feature useless and boring so we'll remove it" act

If they, god forbid, nerf actual POISON or rework it from the ground up so there's room for some special snowflake feature they'll stop caring about next week, there's no telling what the future will have in store for Crawl

Minimalistic tiles are far less efficient at conveying information than ASCII, and most roguelike players tend to not care all that much for graphics, else they would play a different genre. If you are not going to make good tiles, they'll be a waste of time.

The best would be really good ASCII, like Brogue's.

Dwarf Fortress ascii is best ascii.

Wut?

Brogue has the best ASCII, Cogmind looks very nice aswell but I haven't played it because I'm not gonna pay 30$ for a roguelike.
>>
>>136968417
brogue isn't ascii, it uses unicode symbols

it isn't even console-based
>>

Then use unicode
