I really dislike shmups that have no sense of rhythm, they feel so hollow.

Play chorensha or gigawing or JSS at a high skill level though, and you feel your heart beating harder and harder in time to the beat, pupils dilating as your focus reaches the razor's edge

For what purpose, I'd only get to hear the full length if I paused the game.
>>
>>136525319
Now it makes sense... Sigh...

>>136528573
This. I don't hear it from many artists, but both ZUN and JynX usually have problems with their composition due to how long a stage or boss actually is. Most of the times, if a song is too long, they'll just scrap it.
>>
>>136529063
>in JSS the speed of enemy spawns creates a percussion line with their explosions as you shoot them down

why can't everyone else just do it right
>>
>>136529457
As someone who has a lot of musical knowledge, I assume most people need the stages to be done before composing for them in order to do that, most shmups don't. Even if you compose after everything's done, getting a fast tempo song that fits the whole stage in terms of rhytmn and feel is very very hard, though possible if you're experienced enough. All in all, depends on how good a musician is.
>>
>>136525638
thx mate

>>136526823
You fucking dumb cunt none of the games you mentioned come anywhere near to the bone shaking nerve racking intensity of point blanking precision dodges against lightening speed bullets in 1.5 max. Try playing it it's extremely addictive and full of "rhythm" or whatever vague nonsense you are talking about.

no, you're making unnecessary movements and you're not keeping a bead on the core. you also need to to learn how to move in more of a fluid, arcing trajectory in order to better control the distances you move by using diagonals. start by moving in figure 8s when the screen is free of projectiles, and always play with analog or a joystick. Nothing else is acceptable.

>>
>>136547352
What's giving you troubles anon? I remember that walking mech being a pain in the ass.
>>
>>136547840
I'm an idiot trying to milk for the final score achievement on my first 1cc. I'm also not consistent at all with the stage 3 boss (the walking mech you're talking about, I believe).
>>
>>136548026
Well there's your problem anon, bosses in Kamui become much harder if you try to milk all their destroyable parts. And I cant even remember if you get extends in that game, so it's pretty much all risk no reward.

And yup, the Augumo if I remember his name correctly is pretty much the first difficulty spike of the game. Once you get him down only Stage 5 should stand i the way of your 1cc. Really you should just abuse that lighting gun for defense, makes things much easier.
>>
Are the shield power-ups random in Kamui? Could never find a pattern for them.
Number of kills maybe?

>>
>>136540620
You'd have to not choose level 3 on the fifth and sixth stages. Suicide bullets would trigger if you choose it five times, not six.

The best route the getting the two extends ASAP is generally anything stage 1 -> Volcano stage 2 (Level 3) starting with 1000 item counter. I'm pretty sure you can at least get the first extend easily through Volcano. After that it's just scrounging up the remaining points however you can elsewhere. I find Graveyard is a pretty decent place for points because there's always ground for point items to break apart on in power up mode. Otherwise try downloading a replay on the leaderboard for the character you're using and see what kind of things they do for points.
>>
>>136559607
Yeah I can get pretty close to the 2nd extend on Volcano so I don't know if getting them both is possible
>>
>>136552737
As far as I can tell it's based on the number of item drops you've picked up.
>>
>>136560117
You can use the recharge in Volcano to get a lot more points out of it, unless you're using Casper in which case that's not necessary. But if you're that close to the second extend then it's probably easier just to get the points elsewhere rather than trying to learn the recharge.
>>
>>136560372
Recharges are a bit complex if you're not planning to play for score.

>>
>>136562802
Oh I know, that's why I said it'd be easier not to, and if he's close to the second extend then it's not necessary anyway.

Both extends are very much possible without worrying about recharges at all, as long as you understand letting point items break apart during power up mode.

Not him
I just recently 1cc'd Kamui. Great game.

I'm not 100% sure if you get extends, but I think you do. One thing that I think is good to do is to use the huge laser thing even if I didn't need to: the damage it does is really good, so even if you aren't having trouble with a pattern and your meter is full, you should use it(provided there is nothing below you to shoot at).

I've also 1cc'd Alltynex Second, another great game. I have to say, though, I'm not impressed by the second ship you unlock. Obviously, the sword is very valuable in this game, and not being able to use it to home onto enemies is such a huge deal breaker that I just can't use the shot type. Also, the laser not homing is a bummer as well.

I was planning on donig RefleX, but I'm working on the MoF extra stage now.

desu the Type B aircraft feels more like a challenge mode. Maybe its because I havent gotten gud with it but whenever I use it it feels like I have to fight the controls on top of dodging bullets. Its a painful experience but I do like how its abilities are kinda the opposite of the normal craft.

Are you asking for "good games for a beginner" or "best of the best"?

For the former, I'd suggest M.U.S.H.A. Aleste, Darius Gaiden, or Touhou's 7, 8, or 10. Those are the three I started out with. Of them, Darius is probably the toughest, but none of them off too much complexity for someone just starting out, and I still heavily enjoy them after playing them off and on for years.

For the latter, there's Battle Garegga, Ketsui and Dragon Blaze. Garegga's music is great, the scoring is very deep by design, and the rank system will keep you on your toes every second. Ketsui offers a scoring system that, while obtuse, let's you go about your own path and still get decent scores, as well as two different 2nd loops each with their own scoring mechanics and difficulty. Dragon Blaze is just a culmination of all things Psikyo; challenging first loop, punishing second loop, and the randomized stages keep the game feeling fresh.
>>
>>136671373
>the scoring is very deep by design
I love Garegga, but the scoring system in it is actually pretty retarded. It's basically just simple medal collecting and dumb milking.
>>
>>136672029
Plus this arbitrary score reward for destroying stuff with certain shot types is way too random.
>>
>>136672029
>>136672969
I said it was deep, and designed that way. Not necessarily that it was well-made. Personally, the fact that just about everything gives different point values based on shot type and whether you bombed it or not is stupid, but it's depth.
>>
>>136673551
Yea, it definitely has depth, that's true. You really must read a guide to score decently in it.
One thing I like about it though is how you use your bombs to score by destroying background stuff. It's fun being able to blow so much shit up and even get huge points for it.
Also the way the medals fall make the game always a new challenge in a different way which is also cool.

I played it a bit and it's pretty damn cool. As an overall CAVE game, it's very good. Not to mention looks and music. Overall it's just a game we can't play on PC yet and it would actually be awesome.
>>
>>136700971
Muchi Muchi Pork would also be good. I can only give plebeian report on SDOJ because I don't have it on 360 and it's unplayable in MAME, but the music is great, the stages look fun enough, and the chaining seems friendlier to people that can't keep on top of it in the other DDP games.
>>
>>136700971
I think it's more that the game is less accessible than a lot of the others, it's very new so it's not emulatable and I think 360 copies are still a little pricey.

I'm looking forward to it because I love the DDP series but I'm a casual who hates chaining

Is there any way a shmup with randomized stage layouts would work? I like casually credit feeding random shmups I've either never played or barely touched so I'm always sightreading and facing different stuff, so if it was done well I feel like a game designed like that could be fun here and there.

Are there indie/doujin shooters out there that work like that?

>>
>>136712206
The closes I can think of are Psikyo shmups, but that isn't a random stage layout so much as randomly choosing between a pool of stages for which comes first, second and so on.

I think I know the answer! It's because Japanese arcade players and developers evolved the genre, same with fighting games and rhythm games. Gameplay has always been the number 1 priority for them but that doesn't mean that other non-play features can't be polished to perfection. What you get in the end is a beautiful full package which just feels amazing to play.
>>
>>136713406
DFK BL Arrange is basically Ketsui. It has re-arranged Ketsui music, the stages and bosses are kinda like DFK and Ketsui smashed together, and the shot types have the Ketsui homing.

In other words you are fucking casual who never played a game for score, since you probably can't even finish them. One of the good things about shmups is that they are about self improvement. It's like playing sports or learning an instrument, and not just silly entertainment crap for dumbfucks like you.

>Nice shit opinion you have, fampie.
It's not an opinon, it's a fact that your movement is very limited in run & gun games compared to shmups. You are just walking around on a 2d plane the whole time, sometimes crouching or jumping, instead of having a gameplay where you have to move around the whole screen the whole time.
>>
>>136725196
Not him but I'd say the limited mobility adds to the challenge. If you could move around the whole screen at will it would be much easier.
>>
>>136725196
alien soldier has some nice movement tho
i wonder if theres any run n guns that have implemented a rank system or something, that could probably give them some more depth
>>
>>136725483
No, the limited mobility makes the genre just boring. The enemy patterns get basic as fuck because of this, much in contrary to shmups where the threats can get much more complex due the fact that you also have more mobility.
>>
>>136725592
I love Alien Soldier like the next guy, but these games simply can't compare to shmups. Shmups have wayyy more replayability, except you want to do speedruns perhaps, but speedruns are just garbage.
