Ded but not defeated.

>What is this?
A general for all strategic, operational, and tactical war games that can't generate enough traffic to sustain their own generals. ARMA need not apply.

I love Battle for Wesnoth but the Tolkien theme annoys me. Is there another free wargame with random that does not use Tolkien lore?
>>
>>136415321
Wrong.

The tank is equipped with TC remote NSVT, all T-72s, even prototypes, did not feature this.

Also early T-72 did not have T-64A turret, albeit it had one very similar. The "new" turret was required due the autoloader of the T-64A not being adopted.

Only the T-80 original production model had a copy of the T-64A turret but also lacked remote NSVT.

Regarding the AARs. My last mission of mini-campaign isn't over yet, here's the situation so far.

In the south enemy tried rushing his armor through my road block, didn't work as well, he even started bypassing it in the south right through the river. Remnants of my armored forces are gathered around the southern mission objective, but they'll be all dead as this thread once enemy Leo 2A4 turns its frontal armor in their direction.

turn-10-2.png
3MB, 1756x931px
In the middle I've transfered BMP-2 platoon and recon elements with ATGMs from the northern side (which is ignored by the enemy) and preparing to fight yet another Leo 2A4 platoon. Once again, I can rely on side and rear hits only, so this is pretty much a game of chance.
>>
>>136421145
On the fucking official site, just open up Google (for retard like you: type google.com in the big white bar in your browser and press Enter), search for WinSPMBT and the first or one of the first links would be it.

turn-11.png

Next turn started fairly good - our old friend Leutnant Rossbach has yet another enemy kill, this time it's Leo 2A4.
In the middle another Leo 2A4 is caught into crossfire and got it's side projection penetrated twice by T-72, resulting in a kill.
And finally in th middle RPG-7V team gets it's shit together and manages to hit another Leo 2A4 from 200 meters right in its shiny metal butt.
>>
>>136421993
Someone even plays campaigns, I tried once, playing with Russian airborne company against Japan and got my shit handled to me by Type 90s and reservists spam.

Also, I'd love to code some shit like FPRS or WinSPMBT but in real time, like Armored Brigade, but on a higher level of command and with more strict OOBs

Meawhile in the south roadblock finally gets overrun once the jaegers catch up with the tanks.

And enemy effectively counters my artillery with his FASCAM. Luckly only two tubes are lost, others are about to reposition.

>>136422772
Basically something like FCRS, but in real time?

As for campaign - I've only managed to win one battle out of four so far, others were a draw. And all of them resulted in mutual destruction, so its pretty tough out here too.

Enemy is approaching mission objective in what looks like a combined arms force. For some weird reason Gepards are leading the way. Well, happend to me in Eugene's Wargame too.

Meanwhile I pop a couple of 2A4 in the north and lose a T-55, which I decided to reposition a bit closer, to enemy Milan

Leutnant Rossbach scores his tenth kill, it was Leopard 2A4. Me and enemy are in opposite situations now - I've lost almost all my infantry, bar mech company HQ and some ATGM and AAA. And he's out of armor, while his infantry finally starts creeping at my mission objectives. Unfortunately for me he has some Milan II which could be a disaster for me.

Woo-hoo, it's finally over and looks like are in for a major victory! Also it's 5th time both me and enemy have very little to fight with in the end. This time my artillery was a game-saver - not sure I'd stand my ground if those waves of enemy Jagers and PzGrens made it to my positions in time and in full numbers

Nope, just a marginal victory. And the campaign is finally over, all in all it was quite interesting to play. Fun fact - the only modern enemy MBT I've knocked out with frontal penetration was a M1A1 in one of the first mission. If this resembles real life, then Cold war gone hot would be a world of hurt for NVA, CSLA and Wojsko Polskie. In SPMBT only Soviets possess tank ammunition that can somewhat reliably penetrate contemporary enemy MBTs. And even then tons of ATGMs they have on pretty much anything are good only against older MBTs or IFVs

I'd still like a system where tanks aren't allowed to shit out 4 rounds before receiving return fire.

The 2.0.11 version of FCRS plans to have this bullshit too, which will make it marginally worse.

The NSVT is just rotated forwards that's all (duh), it's not remote controlled. If you look well enough you'd see flaps on hull sides, no T-64 model ever had them. As for the turret, I forgot to write "T-64A styled turret", yea it wasn't straight from T-64A.
Tank in the picture is just early T-72. Pic related.

the T-72 NSVT's magazine is different from the T-64, (50 rnds vs. 150 rnds)
the T-72 NSVT has a collimator sight just above it, which the T-64 lacks
the T-64 has the TC IR always aligned immediately left of the NSVT

T-64bm is probably the best cost effective medium tank as of now, better than the k1 and mexas.
T-72bu is a requirement for superheavy spearhead tactics as it will only be stopped by a m1a2, atgm plane, lucky or plentiful tow-2, longbow and infantry nests such as woods and cities.
Best (and only) option for a fighter is a pair of veteran mig-25pd.

But in any case, you should play men of war instead as it is a massively better game.
>>
>>136473887
T-64BM is the current meta medium tank for USSR
T-72BU is one of the higher end tanks that can compete with higher tier Abrams

Ignore the memeposters. Having a naval tab is fine, you'll regret it if you'll accidentally join a land/naval game.
Just a tip, the minimum should be:
>2 Jianghu
>3 Hujian

Jianghu is mainly for coastal bombardment and sector capturing, Hujian is the real deal and you will never want to lose them. If possible, bring your FOB as close as possible to the coast, otherwise just hope one of your teammates has a supply ship.

The other 3 slots can be whatever you want. I personally suggest naval infantry, so as USSR, it would be:

>BTR-** Morskaya Pekhota
>BTR-** Spetznaz GRU
>Afghanskii
Afghanskii for immediate air support on landing and as a cheap (20+5) transport for land CV. Just dump one next to a spare CV and ship it around.

For strategy Wargame titles there's not that much under the 'real time' category other than Graviteam Tactics: Mius front and maybe Combat Mission which is really better played its turn-based mode. There's a lot of hex titles like Flashpoint Campaigns but they are all turn-based.

For Arma there are no public 'milsim servers', just a lot of groups that have events every week or two. I'd recommend Broma and Murshun which are 4chan affiliated groups which have no barriers to entry and if after trying them they aren't realistic enough you can move on to other groups.

Making a game from scratch is a huge time sink. Honestly its better to check what engines are available and see if there's one that fits your needs; the result might be less bloated or less prone to bugs. If you're trying to make something super niche you might be out of luck though.

FPS, there's Project Reality, which is a free standalone mod of BF2. It's got a shitload of content from factions, weapons, maps and so on. There's even Nam maps, and Falklands is coming soon. There's also a WWII beta.

Squad is the same idea, except it's early access, and you need to buy it. There's no content for it at the moment, so skip it for now.

Insurgency is okay, it's more of a tac-shooter. Lots of mods for it.

RTS there's Graviteam Tactics and Combat Mission, both have a fairly steep learning curve. If you want something simpler, Wargame and Men of War exist. There's plenty of hexshit to find. Older games like WinSPMBT an Close Combat are also really good. If you're looking for RTS, check the welcome games in the OP.

Maps are standart 100x80 size.

That >>136437765 guys is quite right. Use 'z'-key indirect fire, it doesn't require full LOS, for instance it can fire through smoke and trees. MG-teams are great at it.

Other than that - it really depends on the situation. In any way try to suppress enemy artillery first (if they're on-map, you can spot them by smoked zones in the enemy rear, if they're offmap it's more complicated - you need to have an offmap arty yourself, if it's not ordered to fire it will do counter-battery at the enemy firing arty. I don't remember full details, check the manual.

If you have TIs you can abuse smoke and be able to fire at enemy units that hasn't got it. Smoke generally can be a game changer here - you could smoke out a part of enemy defence and concentrate your fire on the rest so you could pick out defenders one by one. Remember that tank platoon leaders usually have some smoke shell. And another thing - usually you'd like to manually turn off automatic AI smoke screening when your armor comes under fire, it usually rather annoying during attack since you could lose LOS at unwanted time. It's done inside unit's stats view, select your unit and press spacebar.

Also, don't forget to set Target Reference Points - you'll be able to fire arty much quicker if have these. It's done at artillery page during the setup phase.

And a more 'gamey' advice.
When it comes to random attack/assault missions AI's deployment of troops is ofter rather silly - it generally fails to cover whole map height, so you can find a safe passage to enemy rear with your scouts and exploit it. When you cap some mission objectives AI generally tries to recapture them, so it's entirely possible that you'll be the one defending after that. And it becomes much easier then.

Some points that I could come up with quickly.

So i've been jerking around a little bit with GTOS just to see the differences from GTMF and i think the interface and graphic is actually better on the older title for some reason.
It just seems much more polished, the only things i don't like so far is that the unit status bar is cut in two at the bottom of the screen (instead of the vertical left side bar) and that the squads icons have no indicator to show if the units has viable AT weaponry or smoke.
And the enviroment appears to be more credible, Mius has that strange gloomy atmosphere with summer-like grass paired and cloudy weather that just don't cut it.
Also, is there a way to remove the horrible blue boxes surrounding units when selected in squad name mode?

This time I play CENTAG 78 revisited campaing as US Army vs horde of godless comunist subhumans.

First mission was a turkey shot, nothing to write home about.

Second one was a turkey shot on an epic scale, having huge amounts of ATGM assets and ability to replenish their supplies plus AI inability to smoke my shit properly and bring AA to the party warranted an easy win.

Points taken - Strela-2 can't hit shit, 5% CTH after flares, 1% CTH after evasive action. Stinger on the other hand hits almost always, but sometimes it isn't enough to bring enemy gunship down or at least force it to retreat. Actually plain old ATGMs (TOWs in my case) were much better at downing enemy helos.

I had to replay it twice since I've fucked up force composition in the third mission. Went really smooth, though I have sinned and savescummed a couple of times. Losing both your Gunships to artillery barrage is a thing you're used to in Wargame, but here I was infuriated. Ended up as major victory eventually.

3rd mission is an attack agains enemy VDV troops. Poor sobs knew what they were up to, feel little regret for them.

As a support for this mission I recieve an airmobile squad. Also I've ordered a mech inf company and a rifle company in trucks.

Scenario is tiny, both in length (9 turns) and map size. Plan's simple - steamroll down to the last objective clearing any resistance in progress. I have to be quick this time, no time to prepare a complex assault schema.

Succesfull landed my airbornes in the middle point. Thats the good news. The bad news - both bridges leading to further points are mined, so I have to either clear them (unknown amount of time) or try and cross the rivers (high chance of stucking down). Also, enemy has some armor, already destroyed one BMD-1.

Not sure if the mines are even being cleared, will have to cross the river on foot since trucks with definitely get stuck. Not sure if my boys will even get to the mission objectives in time - I have only 5 turns left. Damn, it's the second game in which I use inf in trucks and they disappoint me once again. Probably not a best thing to get.

Enemy tries to recap middle point which I was about to leave. I guess I'll have to leave at least a couple of squads behind to hold them until my foot inf catches up. 4 turns left, most of the points are already mine. Also enemy Para Snipers are armed with PKP Pecheneg for some weird obsole OOB reason.

You're a patch too early. F-4F KWS will be godlike after the air overhaul hits, for now stick with elite RDIs. Even in an environment where everyone is spamming F&F, an elite RDI will have way more chance to hit with the same survivability and much deadlier if you do get close. If you must stick to F&F, at least make your fighter elite, even if it's only 140pts.

Too much AA. Dump the supply helo and an AA piece and get one more fighter or AT plane or recon thingy or even a leclerc.

Dump either keiler or leo 2 (I'd dump leo 2), dump leo2a4, get leclerc and use the free points on maxing plane or recon tabs.

Otherwise pretty good. I'd rework the infantry tab to fit in more fighting inf, by ditching the marder 2, ditching either manpad or ATGM, and maybe even downgrading jaeger to pzgren, but if you do fine with your current numbers then that's cool I guess. Downvet the jaeger.

4th mission of CENTAG 78 campaign.
This time I'm at relative disadvantage - the only thing that can reliably destroy enemy T-64B are my TOW and Milan ATGMs. And they won't be as effective as before since visibility is relatively low - 28 hexes. On the other hand enemy has probably forgot to take AA again, at least in the first line of attack, so my Cobras will be really effective and hopefully will be able to get rid of enemy MBTs early..

So basically I'm playing the defence against superior enemy armor yet again. Enemy T-64s are staying in the back for some reason, my Cobra's are out of ATGMs and retreating to FARP for refill.

I have a Minelets ammo this time, which is awesome, but I fear that I won't be able to use them properly - they have a 2 turns delay, hard to where the enemy tanks will be by then. I only hope that they'll wait in the rear a little longer.

Now this is some bad news - Enemy has an battle group attempting some sort of a flanking maneuver. Looks like I'll have to fall back in the south, unless Cobra's will be able to handle it.

Generally my plan for this mission wasn't really good - most of ground-based ATGMs are in the open ground in the north, where, as it seems, only a couple of BMP-2 platoons are against them. BMP's are not the problem for TOWs, enemy infantry is.

Nyet, I am no ded yet.

The turn is 10, half of the battle is over. Main complication this time is unpredictability of enemy actions - they didn't go the way I expected, so I have to fill the gaps on the go.

Main point of interest is this little village near the center of the map, Fearing the T-64s I had to reinforce it with armor and infantry alike. Looks like it wasn't that necessary, initial group is doing just fine, tanks are destroyed or stopped and enemy infantry that's late to party is getting pounded by lots of arty.

My minelets weren't that effective - 2 tanks got caught, others decided to go other way. Once I get rid of T-64Bs with mah choppaz this approach lane is considered fairly safe - I'll fill the gap (next pic) by my Leos 1A3 by the time T-62s get there, and they + Marders with Milan are more than enough to deal with them.

In other news - first core unit is lost, M60A1 RISE didn't notice sneaky scout. I'm launching a couterattack in the middle and in the north attempting to recap some Soviet points.

Last battle felt like a little too easy. Enemy had no AA at all - Strela-2 doesn't count as it has more chances to hit my helos with AK than with it's missile. He had no artillery bar some 82mm Vasileks. And he attacked my positions with piecemeal groups that were easily dealt with.

I agree, at least so far. ATGMs just rape the fuck out of poor Russians AI who can't use smoke and for some reason has no useful AA.

Although next mission looks hardcore, judging simply by the amount of assistance I get. Two FRG mech inf companies, two tank platoons, some ATGMs with HOT and lots of F-104 starfighters with some Alpha Jets. Didn't use jets lately, not sure I'll be able to use them effectively.
I've already started taking losses here and there, this isn't looking that bright. Best moment so far - ATGM duel between Cobra and Mi-2, Cobra won.

Map has large height again, so tranfering reinforcements isn't that easy. Good thing I've save some points on repairs - last two missions I had almost no casualties - and got me a mech inf company, so I have a layered defence of some sort - Germans in the front line, Murricans in the second line.

Really intense mission. Lost a recon heli to enemy arty barrage. Enemy Mi-24 got hit by arty too, retreated to its base. Just like in good ol' Wargame.

Redeyes and Stingers are mostly ineffective against enemy planes - even if they hit, the don't bring them down immideately. Gepard and Chapparal on the other hand are rather good - MiG-23 and Su-25 are grounded forever. Lost an Alpha Jet myself, he didn't even make it to the target zone.

Some losses here and there, mostly to the enemy artillery and air strikes.

Nothing really threatening so far, apart from this hard push in the north, but it's just turn 5 of 45 total turns. I'm said to be fighting enemy tank regiment, so I expect much more troubles to come.

Northern positions are overruned, trying to retreat gracefully and save as many troops as possible. No serious action so for in the middle, yet it's where most of my inf defences are set up.
In south it seems like enemy is about to launch an attack, nothing to worry about yet, unless there's an enemy tank company in that forest to the east.
For some weird reason my planes arrive from enemy side of the map (even though I've set approach and evac explicitely) and I'm losing them before they do any good. This turn Alpha Jet actually did harm - he fell right on top of marder, crew is dead, vehicle is non-repairable.

Elite MLD, elite PU, even elite Yak is better than 31M. Personally I'd go for MLD because you always need a reliable helo killer and the PD can't do that, and because it can do a pretty good job as ASF if sent alongside a PD as opposed to solo.

Taking 31M over PU is madness.

Damn, this battle is tiring. Played it for a few hours today already, and only 1/3 of it is done.

Here's the sitrep.

Biggest threat so far was a breakthrough in the southern part of the map. They didn't push straight to next point, instead they went north and were threatening my ATGM positions.

Although some reinforcements from the middle, nicely placed cluster bombing and some artillery fire stopped them fairly easy. Few losses here and there, but I'm pretty sure we'll be able to hold in case of another assault. Unless the enemy brings T-64 there - then I'll have to rely on my heli support to stop them.

Middle, that was expected to be the main axis of the enemy attack, is surprisingly quiet. Few tanks, some inf constantly pinnded down under mortars firing, pretty much thats it.

And finally the north, where the enemy pushed the hardest. I've left the little village, but the enemy had nothing to exploit the success. Even if he had - that wasn'y my main killing zone. You can notice brave observers in the little patch of tree to the north of the road - they have a magical TI tech on them, so enemy inf being under constant artillery fire, didn't even manage too leave the village.

And here is the hill which provides great view on both northern and middle approaches. ATGM vehicles and tanks there rack up pretty impressive kill-lists.

Generally this doesn't feel like as easy as before - enemy uses smoke pretty heavily and in sensible places, although for some reason he does it after middle and top pushes are already deflected. Artillery fire is heavy and, even though my troops are dug in, manages to get a kill here and there. He has some air (at least, had) MiG-21Bis with PGM were especially annoying, destroying my artillery spotter vehicle and a Gepard. Also he had (or still has) some SEAD - one missile that was targeting the Gepard missed it, but destroyed the Jaguar-1 (ATGM veh) instead. Also I've already lost both recon helos (one to the enemy arty) and I've using my Cobras much more conservatively. And Strela isn't that bad against low-ECM planes - got my Alpha Jet damaged by Strela-2 and finished off later by Shilka.

Oh fuck, just got two barrages from Uragan's. These things evaporate anything with low armor and infantry not in cover. I got lucky the strike hit APCs but not infantry - enemy is pushing again with armor, this time right through the forest, they'll come in handy.

They really want that highway as it seems. My losses are high, but manageble. Mostly German tanks and ATGM vehicles, rationale is simple - it's their country, so they should be dying for it.

Even though the Red Juggernaut hasn't come that far - only those two points are captured - I'm transfering the reinforcements from the north which seems to be completely safe.

Is the nork t-72m okay now?
>>
>>137007462
Still overcosted and inferior to other T-72 variants. Nork armor is depressing in general; half of their entire selection is stuck at 6rpm without an autoloader. The selling point was always above-average AP with shitty accuracy, ROF, range, speed, and armor, forcing you to play them as ambush units. Balance changes have seen other nation's tanks gain comparable AP whilst still being superior in terms of all other stats.

I'd post a comparison but we're at the image limit.

The VDAA and the Cassiopée ever entered service.
You can use the Gazelle (Canon or Celtic) and Crotale instead.
Legion '90 is too modern since they use the Eryx ATGM. Use regular Legion or RIMa '85 instead.

Fast roping in Wargame? I thought that was a Project Reality meme.

I was there when the 40 HE AKM bug happened, but what is this fast roping about?

Is it as hilarious as ships on land?
