That I've ever fought was an 8k vs 8k showdown in Attila. Close second was like a 13k man battle in Shogun 2. Both were fun as fuck.

The shogun fight was spanned across two hills and a forest which was really difficult. I had to pause scum a few time a just to manage my flanks properly.

The only time I pause is at the start of a battle after deployment. more so in shogun 2 in a siege where they just appear out of nowhere. less so in attila where they're already visible.

But I don't like pausing or slowing down the game.

Big battles of 2 stacks vs 2 stacks can be an absolute charnal house though.

no, unfortunately I dont had to do an hdd wipe and lost all my old screens, but they didnt look that great anyway, the reinforcements were coming from all over the place and after the first stacks were done, there were many small scale fights all over the place and nothing properly organised so there was no carpet to show

Yes, it's worthwhile. After the occupation malus wears off and the province has enough food, a couple of public order buildings is all you really need. You can build up a large public order buffer by garrisoning the settlement for a few turns.

fug, even with a massive cavalry advantage basic levies really struggle against armored professional soldiers

also is it just me or is the AI in AoC better than in the grand campaign, so far the AI has been very reluctant to charge the cavalry general into my infantry in AoC, while it does this all the time in grand campaign

Do you not use artillery often in AoC? I think what causes cavalry charges into your infantry line is the AI attempting to get the artillery. It's extremely prioritized.
If it's far enough behind your line they'll flank logically, but if it's close they may charge.

You can't claim that Napoleon has some especially retarded AI. On the contrary, many people consider Napoleon's battle AI (campaign AI is still as retarded as ever) to be one of the best in the series, even though that's not saying much.

Memes aside, I do find the difference between mountainside and non-mountainside cities strange. It's obvious that CA are going for a heavily stylised approach where cities take up the same kind of real estate on the campaign map as they did in older titles but it doesn't contrast well with the Dwarf holds that can be lavishly detailed without affecting the playable area because they're inside mountains.

I think, after looking at the campaign map, there's a lot of really big human cities, but the inner land where human cities are located is actually pretty small (relatively speaking), so putting a big city with a big AoD could really fuck that shit up. A mountain settlement is on a fucking mountain, which was already impassable terrain.

Honestly I think CA is going to have to add an entire underground layer to the map if they want Skaven to work properly. Not like their underground passage system at the moment, I mean a fully-featured subterranean layer that has cities built on it.

It's not really surprising that Skaven are being held back for the sequel when you consider just how wildly different from every other faction they are. Shit's gonna take a lot of work to do right.

They'll work the same as Dwarfs with the underway stance and when you siege their cities it'll be underground. Possibly they'll make it so skaven never have to travel out of the underway so can't be ambushed on land until they surface to attack.

The cities will be visible on the map but when you actually fight the siege you'll be underground. The underway isn't visible but a little tunnel pops up near your general and he moves to it then out the other side that you clicked to.

Do you guys really find it fun to do completely unplausible things like that? This one is remotely plausible, though.
Not trying to be rude, sorry if it sounds like that, serious question... That's why I hardly play any Greek state besides Sparta (and even then I barely conquer anything outside of Greece and Asia Minor) and Athens (I can be a bit more free with this one). I end up only playing barbarian factions to conquer germanic/western europe and harass Rome trying my best not to enter asia minor, Rome, Carthage, Persian states, the (historically) bigger sucessor kingdoms (not because of difficulty or lack thereof).
It kind of hampers my fun. I cannot deal with ugly borders or impossible overextensions. Too bad the game doesn't give you other options like Paradox games, or even Civ.

416AD and I'm thinking of trying to take the rest of Aquitania and Narbonesis before Attila pops up but I'm dealing with public order issues and need most of my troops garrisoned.

Should I just say fuck it and take it to the saxons? I kicked them out of Frisia in turn 2 and they hoarded around for a while before finding a new home near the Pyrenees mountains.

I burned everything down and moved to Africa, converted to minor religions.

Once I build at least one shrine in a province I have zero public order worries and I can slowly steamroll my way back across the map and reclaim all my former lands.

I bought Atilla yesterday, love it. Played a bit of the prologue and everything flows so smooth.

A small question, however.

I began a Grand Campaign as the Franks, expanded southward and took the entire province, however my income is still very low and not high enough to repair/convert buildings per turn.

Is there a way to expand without having rebellions every other turn?

Cannons are best used against enemy cavalry in field battles. but really their best factor is that they force the enemy to attack you. so while cannons might not be the best unit. its usually worth lugging one around just so that you can play your matchlocks defensively which is where they work the best.

If you take the Ma'rib dam and convert to Semitic paganism, you could get 3750 gold a turn from a single farm in a 5-fertility region - which is easy to get if you build two Slavic pagan buildings in each province before you convert to Semitic paganism.

I tried it, but after setting up my new capital in Arabia Felix, it just got boring. I'd have to fight the Sassies and I'd have to do it with shitty barbar units.

Not that big a deal in the long term, immigration can make it a bitch but if you keep one army per province that's large enough to auto-wipe small rebel stacks, it isn't a big deal to wait for conquest penalties to decrease and for your own PO buildings to get built.
