If you want a more durable sword class, I'd go for Cavalier into Paladin or Great Knight; Shelter and the movement are amazing utility, Open Assault is a neat "free damage" ability, and it has better stats in general.
Alternatively, you could go Oni into Blacksmith, but I don't know if that's better than the Cav tree.
