At least Nikkari and Manabu had reason to be hanging around with you in a way that Hope or Hugo really didn't, and are still in active service. Manabu is a more recent recruit but somewhat experienced.

Why would keeping around chinese characters in a language other than chinese when they aren't needed be better? The meaning of the words are still the same, in hanguk you know how to pronounce them where with hanja you had to memorize the character.

Well it's a subjective thing of course, but the ways in which your mind interprets the two is different. Hangul is better for literacy rates in the sense that you can basically read every word, but it is said that it's *faster* to read the same things in hanja (in the case of, say, a newspaper article).
To give a comparison in Japanese, it's like if all sentences were written in just katakana:

To say it can be 'read' is technically true, but it's magnitudes more difficult to naturally understand what's being described. Same reason people sometimes have a harder time with older games where kanji was not usable.
I'm sure if you were to use only that for long enough, and developed some more rules for how to write it, it would eventually be more workable, but there's more value to hanzi/kanji/hanja than just whether it can be read by someone seeing it for the first time.

Lots of fun for authors and other writers when they choose variants of words to use. A character from China uses more 漢語, a period piece uses less foreign loanwords, that sort of thing. Not really. korean does not have the same crazy amount of homophones as Chinese/Japanese languages and while it's easier to understand the meaning of words with hanja it's harder to actual read it due to it's multiple pronunciations for example you can't really be sure how to read someone's name until they tell you how to read it.
