When the Uchiha feel anguish, their brains produce a special kind of chakra that fuels their eyes with more power, and many Uchiha in turn become enticed by that power.
You know that feeling when someone gets super angsty about something and wants to kill everything but can't because they don't have the ability? The Sharingan actually enables the Uchiha to have that ability, so they typically go mad with power afterwards.

I just like Madara more because he was more of an abstract villain. It's cool the way he is just propelled forward through the plot simply because of his power and warmongering. Almost like he knows that his justifications and ideas are merely irrelevant elements in a grander story and he's only their really to play the role of the final boss, for whoever it may be.
It's nice the way it went in stages after all, with Obito being the emotional vigilante who's influences are grounded in reality, then Madara as the grandaddy of warfare, and finally Kaguya as some weird alien, mother of all energy, after-the-final-boss kind of boss
