This. Potions are a must. If I was going solo I'd use a minimum of Ironskin, Regen, Endurance, and Lifeforce. Damage potions also reduce the duration of the fight which increases your chance of survival. If this still isn't enough, you may need to leave the box and kite the final phase.

The game is balanced around Softcore, so that's the way it's supposed to be played. Going Mediumcore or Hardcore aren't good ideas at all. If you really want a challenge you could always go Softcore/Expert Mode, but I'd advise against it since you're just starting out.

When you craft something it has a chance of being really good or really shit or sometimes just average. Once you find the goblin you can reforge your weapons and tools for better stats.

You didn't do anything, they spawn with the weapon/tool/accessory. It's not because you put on armor, they were always there. You probably just didn't notice them until now. They're actually pretty important, there's a pretty noticeable difference in quality when you compare a legendary sword vs. a shameful sword of the same type.
You can't change them now, but later on there's an NPC that lets you re-roll your prefix for gold to try to get a better one

That's my biggest problem with this game: you have to use the wiki in order to play. There's no way around it since nothing is explained to you. The Guide is worse than useless. Every time I click him for advice he tells me to break Demon Altars, and after I've gone and broken them he tell me to break more Demon Altars.
A librarian NPC who doles out info and/or instructional books would be a huge help. They could show up when you set up a bookcase in your base or something. Also, I just plain like building libraries and it would be cool to have a librarian NPC to live in them.

Be mindful of the biome you're fishing in.
Always make sure the water you're fishing in is deep enough.
Remember, water depth only counts if there's a straight line from the surface.
Catch worms and combine them with stars for quick and easy high quality bait.
Invest in minions to keep yourself safe while you're fishing.

Well, fool that I am, I wanted to try doing a witch doctor run with just summons, blowpipes, and some other thematically appropriate weapons. I figured having some sidearms would help, but let me tell you right now that the blowpipe ain't worth shit. Even getting stingers to make more potent darts doesn't really help at all. They're what I use because they're efficient and I don't have an imagination. It's cute that the NPCs mingle but I also don't like being able not to find one, or one being hidden behind another.

Yes, and the walls in between are all destroyed. I cut a huge horizontal tunnel that splits my cavern and surface layers so that I can purity the whole surface. Problem is, the ocean spreads the corruption in a way that can't be fixed because it's offscreen. So I had to dig a vertical hole on the edge and block off the water with a copper blockade so that my ocean doesn't drain into my tunnel.
