I think melee units in general are pretty badly OP as they stand, so much that the only ranged unit I could as more powerful than them is the Sectopod, if I can't start cleaning on the turn I trigger the pod and if it goes for a double shoot instead of that stupid "let me set up my superweapon" move

>Faceless can pop and melee dash on the same turn, which can easily fuck you over in earlier missions
>Regular Stun Lancers can dash melee you all the way from the fog of war
>Sneks can pull you from full cover and still use it when constricting someone, and are the first unit to introduce the dreaded Dodge mechanic
>Elite Stun Lancers gain an armor pip and can Dodge too, meaning that even a full Overwatch wall if you can set it up has significant chances to fail completely between the Overwatch penalty, the general miss chance from Dodge and Dodge grazed hits

It really feels like, whatever they did for it to happen, they rushed the game out of the door still

The camera hangs are all sorts of awful, but the one thing that caught my attention was being pulled out of the map by a viper tongue and having a soldier levitate for the entire mission from a broken cover. Both on the same Blacksite mission

I think the mere fact that melee units can dash and attack in the same turn is broken as fuck. Imagine EW if the Chrysalids or Berserkers could have done that. Add on the Stun Lancers' chance to stun and you get suicidal mooks streaking out of the dark to one-shot your guys even if they only do one actual damage. I hope this shit gets rebalanced or someone makes a mod for it, because it's severely hampering my ability to remain in control of the situation.

Conversely, I don't think it's unfair that the Ranger can do it because Slash is to Rangers what Run and Gun was to Assaults, and RnG was a much better power in my opinion.

Dodge is a bullshit mechanic by all margins, and it's only going to get worse as the rest of your ADVENT units upgrade

>Free miss chance, allowing ridiculous misses at flanked CLOSE RANGE

Just one tip to deal with them. If an unit is exposed to incoming melee, hunker it down and aid protocol it instead of setting up an overwatch wall. If you have other serious threats, fire at them instead and just hope it isn't TOO bad

A lot easier. Do NOT get yourself revealed before reconning everything and anything, and get a Specialist to disable the console. Also be careful, most pods spawn inside the saucer. Battle Scanners are extremely useful in this mission in particular

This game is raping my ass so hard and I love it, 5 hours in and the only veterans who haven't died are a Dutchman with John Lennon glasses and a Irish sniperwaifu. Some of the missions will require you to complete one of the objectives within a certain amount of turns.
To compensate for this, most missions give you concealment, which is a pseudo-stealth phase allowing you to setup an ambush on a bunch of enemies.

I got a no-time limit mission after a load of bullshit ones in which literally every non-rookie was hopsitalized apart from a Korean backbench sniper with aviators and I thought 'I'm literally going to take five million years with this mission' and it was the most successful one of my playthrough. No one even got wounded and my Korean guy turns out to be a fucking psychopath who I may replace my main sniper with.
Basically no timer missions are just breathing space.

Same thing happened to me like 30 minutes ago. I even cross-checked with other soldiers to see if it happened for them incase there was some special effect I was missing but nope. The second is shit. Your sniper should ALWAYS be firing on a normal mission

This is especially true if your sniper has the skill that gives it a free action after killing an enemy on a lower elevation, allowing you to reload instead of taking a turn off reloading

Hunkering is seldom very useful if your sniper is exposed, since all the useful roof cover is usually half cover

I downloaded the game yesterday and it was so buggy that I literally couldn't play it. Just went to bed and didn't bother with it

Earlier I read up that verifying the game files fixes that shit, so I went and did that.

Brought up 4 damaged files and then queued a patch of roughly 630MB which fixed everything from my end

Turn limit severely limits how many "solutions" you have to a given mission, especially later on at a higher difficulty setting.

It's not hard, it's just not fun to be told how to play. Maybe some people want to take some missions on in other ways. Maybe they want to be tactical and creative about it.

There is nothing hardcore about doing it fast. There is nothing hardcore about spamming overwatch.

All turn limit does is limit you to one play style later on. Not a single positive thing about it.

And the game deserves its negative reviews, Firaxis is shit at launching games as usual.

If anything it creates situations you would normally not find yourself in had the limit not been there. It creates unique scenarios you have to work your way out of with minimal losses.

There's a reason professional Chess has a 60-90 second time limit per turn, because if there was no limit all the autists who memorized every single counter move would win the game. It turns the game into quick strategic thinking instead of meta gaming bullshit.

I'm going to restart my campaign for the third time as I lost the first and the 2nd I cheesed and savescummed too much I am going to savescum a little still, since I am not made of iron. At least enough to get sergeant so I can have five squaddies. What I've picked up on and that might help others, bearing in mind I ain't no beagle and this was on commander difficulty:

-Prioritize opening up communications with the area holding the ayy facility. I thought I could just hit the black site to turn back the clock, but for whatever reason I wasn't able to when the bar filled and the countdown started, and it would also take too long to open up communications with Mexico (was in South Africa so I had to open it up with Brazil then with Mexico) in time. Make sure you have access to a facility to smash before the countdown starts, not once it does.

-Make sure you got 10 advent trooper corpses in the bank (and more for the exo or skelly-suit. 2 for one of them if I recall). I had the odd business of being mid-campaign with archons and mutons and codex but no predator armor because of that.


At least for me the facility (not black site) was easy as shit because the map was a Plateau next to the very small facility. And since you don't got a time limit, go slow as fuck and overwatch that shit. In fact, bait them back into ambushes or better cover for you. Think it took me 20 turns on facility or black site because I wanted to take it slow.

-Grenadier is love, grenadier is life.

-"All but one guy overwatch and then break concealment" is great vs one 2-3 man pod. But it is not a panacea for every encounter, and can even be worse than that.

It may be down to the mission variety that I've been getting, so many fucking VIP missions, but the timer has been making me use pretty formulaic tactics (move up until I see the first pod, ambush them, work my way to the objective staying in full cover, dash to the evac / mop up survivors).

The one time I got a data retrieval mission I snuck into the office and hacked the terminal fairly easily, but it alerted the aliens who were all pretty close and put me in a much worse off tactical situation than had I worked my way toward the objective murdering everything in my path like normal.

Keep in mind, I like the idea of the timers I just don't think it's fully fleshed out or integrated into the game flow as well as it could have been.

If you want to win every mission with no losses and no time limit, play vanilla XCOM on rookie difficulty. Make sure to savescum whenever a soldier dies and try to have two snipers in your team.
