One of the weapons they give you earlier on, the Hongmoon weapon, you can upgrade through progressing through the game
You can feed it fodder items/etc to get it to it's upgrade point, at which you require a specific weapon + another item to move onto the next tier.
Viridian Poison + That sword you currently have equipped should progress you to the next stage of the Hongmoon weapon after you max it out, for example.

They're factions and you can join them pretty early on. It gives you an outfit that basically flags you for pvp with the other faction. I think there's more to it, like I heard people talking about dailies related to them but don't know anything about it.

You get your first amplifiers from a side quest in Bamboo Village, next to Dochun's house if I remember right.
It's basically a system to upgrade your weapon. Left click on an upgradeable weapon, click Manage Equipment, and then add the Amplifiers, such as a weapon. In the side quest, you use up ruby-looking elements you're provided for the test run of the system.
