The Avenger is OK, but the Hornet should beat it easily.
325A is also OK

Gladius is a bit shit right now, Freelancer has no radar, and the Andromeda should have trouble getting kills as fast as the fighters around the comm arrays.

It's funny watching /scg/ calling ships like Freelancer and Cutlass shit when the only thing we can compare them in is in Public Matches in AC.

The game got a far wider scope than just AC which will show that the Freelancer and Cutlass may be very good at what they do.

Ain't the Cutlass supposed to be a dirt cheap pirate ship ingame? A ship with a lot of shit just tacked together just to let pirates board and attack other ships in high numbers?

Ain't the Freelancer supposed to just be either a small freighter (Standard and DUR) with some defense or a dedicated artillery (MIS) ship which is why the view aint a priority.

It feels like everybody hates ships purely because of AC scores.
>>
>>128748038
>ships from the same manufacturer look similar!!!!!1!!1

>>128757018
>Ain't the Freelancer supposed to just be either a small freighter (Standard and DUR) with some defense or a dedicated artillery (MIS) ship which is why the view aint a priority.
I know this is bait, but the actual, dedicated freighters have a better view than the Freelancer.

The DUR is supposed to be exploration, too. And how do you want to explore (which might include landing) when you literally can't see shit?
Just go into 3rd person?

Yeah, sure. But right there, in that instant, all the immersion goes to shit.

The view is just shit because they decided it should be shit. The two and a half acres of dashboard and windowsill serve no purpose beyond making the window smaller.
>>
>>128757759
Cargo space currently has no function but will play a very large role in the final game. No pirate is going to get very much done from the seat of a fighter.

>walls of the throat come together during sleep, blocking off the upper airway. Breathing stops for a period of time (generally between ten seconds and up to one minute) until the brain registers the lack of breathing or a drop in oxygen levels and sends a small wake-up call. The sleeper rouses slightly, opens the upper airway, typically snorts and gasps, then drifts back to sleep almost immediately. In most cases, the person suffering from sleep apnoea doesn’t even realise they are waking up. This pattern can repeat itself hundreds of times every night, causing fragmented sleep. This leaves the person feeling unrefreshed in the morning, with excessive daytime sleepiness, poor daytime concentration and work performance, and fatigue. Treatment for sleep apnoea relies on changes to lifestyle, including losing weight and cutting down on alcohol

Jesus fucking christ what a shit life.

Thinking about trading in my Freelancer, the cockpit is just so ass. Then again, even with clear cockpit vision you know we'll all be breaking immersion by looking around in third person, it's just so easy to sneak up on people otherwise. A real reason to trade it in would be more cargo space.

there's citizens and civilians, op paper it's supposed to work like starship troopers but in practice there's a fair bit of nepotism; higher class families and benefactors of the empire have pretty much an expectation of citizenship and write the test or whatever essentially as a formality, while some lower classes and especially people with the wrong history or family name will never manage to pass the test regardless of their score, and the cost of a citizenship test is fairly exorbitant in the first place making it beyond the means of many.

how it will work in practice we don't know yet.

I'm sure it will, but pretty sure citizen status will be revoked if you're an outlaw. sounds like they may even have something akin to a typical faction system wherein you can only go to certain areas depending on your standing, albeit with more overlap than not. example; you'll be arrested if caught in UEE core space, but if you're a respected citizen and you wander into spider or nexus, you might get nabbed and ransomed.

Thats pretty fucking old, too.

The 'performance' config is tailored to CPUs. If you're using the i7 one it might be asking for hings that aren't even supported by a CPU that launched in 2009.

Because consider the business model here. There is NO publisher. No venture capitalist. Not even investors. Just backers who are essentially donating/pre-buying/DLCing, depending on the particular game we're talking about and what backer rewards they choose.

It's easy to forget that Chris has no one on the capital side to answer to. His startup capital comes from the same well that his revenue will: gamers. At first it was purely based on marketing promises, and as we get more alpha versions it's slowly turning into customer satisfaction.

Meanwhile, how much advertising does Sandy buy? Say what you will, she's a brilliant marketer, because so far as I can tell, she's gone all-in for PR and ONLY PR, little or no advertising at all.

Now look at it from the gamer press point of view. They didn't inflate this bubble, they didn't support it, they don't stand to gain from it, and they risk losing a whole fucking lot of ad revenue if this business model gets more common. Meanwhile, they're in bed with publishers who'd dearly like to see Star Citizen fail for most of the same reasons.

Say what you will about gg and gamer culture; the scandals last year demonstrated pretty conclusively that the gaming press is corrupt to the core. They'd be nuts not to try to ruin this game; their only problem is they may not get the opportunity. In reviewing articles on the web and youtube, it seems like they're trying to do just that.

Final note: I am NOT a Star Citizen backer, and I've never played the alpha. I'm a professor in a business school who's monitoring this project and the buzz around it for scholarly reasons. I used to be a gamer; when I get time I still play now and then, but while the game looks fucking awesome on YouTube it's not MY game.
>>
>>128807794

Haven't they done just that when they do a second or third pass of previous designs? Tear out the generic parts and revamp them to be more unique?

>>128758320
>>128803151

I'd be stunned if they didn't rework the cockpit a little more. They could move the front seats up a foot or two, remove the "ledge" to make the hull line up flush with the front window, and grow the window by a foot or so. Each is a pretty minor change on its own, but collectively should improve the field of view drastically without getting away from the "space truck" aesthetic.

(Still the academic from >>128827958)
>economists wet dream

Crowdfunding is absolutely an exciting business model to economists. Not because we care one way or the other (though some of us have private views on the subject). Because it's so entirely new and novel, it's a great testbed to look at how existing theory gets applied in a new context, allows us to refine or develop new theories, and gives us an exciting new source of data to base future research on.

Our whole job boils down to writing academic papers, getting them published, and then hoping people cite them. New business models (especially sexy ones prominently featured in the media) like crowdfunding are gold for accomplishing that.
>>

heh...

Something else to consider. People consider this a more democratic fundraising effort, whatever that means.

But when you think about it, Chris and his family are pretty much the sole shareholders.

If he'd gone to VC, then there'd be maybe a half-dozen shareholders, maybe more depending on how many people own stock in the VC.

If he'd gone to a traditional publisher, a public corporation listed on a stock exchange, then he'd have thousands of owners voting on board membership and each getting a share of the profits.

So while crowdfunding may be more "democratic" (slippery word) from a creative and vision side, from an ownership/management side it's essentially a far more dictatorial approach. Which is fine. Chris can't order anyone killed, can't force you to back him, can't even keep you from playing/backing other games once you DO back him.

But for people obsessed with ownership structures (like marxists), the notion that crowdfunding is more democratic is kind of strange.

In crowdfunding's defense, what DOES become much more democratic is access to capital. Which obviously is the point. You the backer have zero official say in a given project... but you have enormous say in the sense that you make a decision about becoming a backer in the first place and for how much.
>>
>>128828305
They said they will cut it back some. So you might get the border trim reduced a bit but not much more than that.
Plus there's still the core issue of it being a 170m/s speed cargo ship that only holds a *sixth* of the cargo that the similarly armed 155m/s speed Constellation Taurus can carry.
>>
>>128828835

I pop in and lurk every few weeks to see the buzz. I also watch the forums, youtube videos and comments threads, and read media accounts on what's happening. My students occasionally bring SC up in class when we talk about crowdfunding.

I'm agnostic about what if anything will actually come of the game, though of course I'm hopeful that this comes to something. At this point with alpha it seems like the odds that the game will never ship at all are pretty low.

People say stuff on 4chan they'd never say IRL. The memes often start here and work their way out into the mainstream. And it's a good way to get a quick pulse of the major issues.

I played space sims in the 90s, so I'd love to see it succeed. But from my own selfish career perspective, whether it's the greatest crowdfunded game in history or the greatest crowdfunded flop in history, either way it'll garner enough attention to be work studying and publishing.
>>
>>128828802

Venture capitalists, like hollywood, music and other fad-driven industries, are subject to cycles of taste.

I didn't doubt for a minute that we'd eventually see a comeback for space sims. What did stun me was the level of funding and the sheer scope of the project. This isn't just a space sim with a FPS bolted on. Potentially, this is a platform for producing games in all kinds of genres that all plug into the same living universe. Assuming they deliver what they've already promised, of course.

I think it is gonna take a long time for CIG to get a handle on SC. There is so much minutia of detail to be worked out let alone what needs to be currently fixed, let alone implementing all the other features/modules that they already have in development.... and then fixing all of that.

I was really hopeful when I saw the progress of 2.0 and the speed of getting 2.1 out (and the associated PU stability improvements)

- BUT -

The PU is literally a tiony test environment, as is AC. So while it shows off the prototype concept, and the currently integrated modules (flying/first peson/some test environments) - It is so far away from what the final game is promised to be (Freelancer on steroids with total persistence and freedom of action, backed with a 90% npc economy) in terms of scale and scope that it is actually gonna take for-fucking-ever to even approach it.

Atleast Squadron42 might provide some much needed spacesim diversion before then.

Please though CIG, prove me wrong, and make 2.2 quickly, with some much needed fixes, and the demo of the persistent economy.

People are calling the Freelancer and Cutlass shit for very specific reasons.

First, because the Freelancer has a ridiculously tiny view window. Not a single company goes "Hey, I'm going to add a solid strip of metal at the bottom of the windshield to block even more line of sight."

Second, because the retards designed the flight engine so Yaw is only determined by +x/-x moment of force rather than +z/-z, the Cutlass has horrible turning. A ship that has two widely spaced main thrusters that can fire in opposite directions should not turn as shitty as the Cutlass does.

On top of that, the Cutlass is brother to the Mustang in being utterly fucking useless once physical damage breaks something.
