Jesus christ tournaments are so mind-numbingly boring. Even if people don't play a top-tier character (which is the most boring to watch), they play their character in an extremely linear way in order to make up for weaknesses or emphasize limited strengths.
For example, this Peach right now. They've float -> daired at least 25 times already and it's still the first match. And judging by what the commentators said, this is the standard for Peach play, meaning most other Peach players play like this.
Why do people enjoy watching this? Honest question. It seems extremely repetitive and predictable to me. Not what I want out of entertainment media.

Sm4sh is actually a lot like chess. The game at a high level is all about covering as many options as you can at any given time. Over-extending is death. You must put your opponent in a situation where they have to play into YOUR hand, and you make sure you have all their options in check.
I could go into much more detail, but I'm watching Genesis.
If you understand the game at a high level, it is very fun to watch.

Not really. Offensive pressure is key. Whoever controls the stage has the most options and option coverage. Passive play will typically put you into a disadvantageous situation. This is why zone-breakers like Sheik are so powerful.

I mained Puff, Palutena and Mewtwo first, then dropped both for Falco, Peach and Olimar, then got bored of Peach and Olimar and subbed them for Robin and Rob, then solo used Kirby and now I find myself only using Ike and Palutena when wanting to have fun.
Peach was boring as fuck holy shit. Doing her combos was the only interesting part. Footsies was boring, ledgeguarding was boring and once I was able to reliably pull off her 0 to death against people with bad or predictable DI, she just flew out the window when it came to being interesting, now I just fap to her booty and remind my friends of when I won the campus wide tourney at my uni with Peach whenever they get cheeky about beating me on Palutena.
