if you want to do mega zigs, you probably want a high HP character, because nothing protects you like high HP does, and by the time you've gotten to a zig, there's a good chance you've found statue form or necromutation to replace gargoyle's innate torment resistance.
Good caster gods are of course vehumet or sif muna. If you want to bomb ziggurats, you'll probably want to switch to makhleb in the lategame, because you'll probably have found some source of channeling, and only good players can clear ziggurats without makhleb.

You should probably be wielding the special bastard sword over the starting curved sword if only to ID it, though there's a chance it's a cursed thing (though some curses are still useful for a while e.g. Fury)
I guess try backing away until you can find a stair, even a downstair. Then you can take it back upstairs immediately if you don't want to be at 250, at least while you try to find a safe space to rest. You may be doomed though.
There's some chance that one of your potions is e.g. confusion and that throwing it at the orc closest could help but I recommend fleeing and hoping for a stair

i never really had problems with wands of digging there... but then, i think i always had a ring of ice because i always went for the best dwarven mystic award instead of the axe
to waste a wish for rings of ice doesn't seem that good imo... i'm sure you still have places to visit where you can find it
so, what to consider imo:
find weakness - note that you will need a lot of time before you train it though
seven league boots - drastically increase your speed, in the wilderness too
scrolls of corruption removal - bless them then btw
archery - the best way to get rid of the bosses, you need to train bows though
arrows of demon slaying - the best way to kill acw, if you don't have them yet, yet again you need to train bows at least a bit

Ok.
First, before you do the warg quest you might want to look for a wand of heal monster as well as haste monster. You should be able to find some before you get to the wargs. Try to find more than one of these as they tend to either explode because of curses or get destroyed by fire hounds or traps.
Second, keep an eye out for magical figurines in the wand shop in town as sometimes you will get a unicorn or some thing that you can ride that is tougher than the starting horse.
Third, keep an eye for staves of summon monster (not summoning, those are bad!) or summon hydra. Keep in mind that the quality of the summoned monsters depends on dungeon depth so the deeper you the better the chances that you can summon a sweet mount. You can find these staves in the black market in the starter town.
Do keep in mind that as a cavalry guy you have short and long bows as well as the yumi skills set to beginner so you should stock up on some phase door scrolls. With the phase doors and a decent supply of arrows you should be able to soften up most threats before they start scratching up your ride and you will build the riding skill up every time you shoot while mounted.
As for weapon selection, you may need to diversify as decent lances are hard to come by in the beginning so look for a decent warhammer or anything with "Riding" in the description.

That's an issue with the way that the ego index works.
The new device system just uses the ego index, but there aren't enough values to correctly call the required elements to forge a device now (device type, device effect, device ego) since there are only 2 values in object type. Chris needs to devise a new system for it to work.

But the thing is that when I looked at the rewards for the other quests (example: Wand of rockets/disint/rod of mama balls for a specific high quest if you're a devicemaster and a wand of frost bolts for the warg quest if you are a devicemaster) the wand code , which is 269: xxx, was fine. Those four items had what you could call a "3.5 code" but only apparently, since when I looked at the list of the wands in prefsomething by looking at the code, I only got different results. Say that wand of rockets is 269:559. You check for "559" in the GIT repository and find it's defined as "rockets". Mount selection - dragons. Seriously, work your way up to where you can either pokeball or buy a magical figurine of an ancient dragon or better.
The reason I say dragons is because they tend to be the fastest mounts. Once you have a dragon work on getting a dracolisk or a greater bile wyrm or venom wyrm. Also, the longer you fight and ride on a mount the faster your mounted movement speed becomes so find a good ride and stick with it for a while. Avoid crystal anything as they reflect heal monster and haste monster spells.
I like to play half-titan for the free probing and high strength and constitution.

Is it just me or are blasty mages in PCB even more of a chore than the normal game? It's like I have to scum a dlevel with a large open room to kill every dungeon boss, and even then it's hard unless you're overleveled as fuck. Compare to most melee where you just buff and go, or buff and do the teleport game for a bit.
