500pp akuma scrub still learning the game here. Today I perfected some 2kpp zangief. The second round he actually put up a fight and i was about to finish him off and the game drops. I try to add him to friends and he blocks me on steam. I haven't felt this feeling of satisfaction since the old days of counter-strike. Anyways im sure none of you care but I had to share. I don't know I am legit awful dude. I can pick up fps games and play them at a fairly high level. For example I've hit the highest rank in csgo on multiple accounts( doesn't mean much tho) but for some reason I can't pick this game up fast.

I think it is because I am scared of what other characters can do and don't spend time in training to see their options.

>>128469067
You can mess around with characters a little first just to see what they're capable of, but really playing someone proficient with that character will be the best way to learn them.

You can either do research on Akuma's match-ups or experiment with your options to see which ones can best your opponents. Akuma tends to have decent options against everyone, though I wouldn't come close to calling him infallible.

I picked Akuma because I can't stand ugly/lame characters. It's kind of silly but aesthetics are important to me. I am actually worried for SFV because all of the characters are ugly in my opinion except for Karin. I do want to try out new characters however. I tried Karin in the beta but she is so different then from what I am use to. What would be a similar playstyle as Karin in USF4 ? As for the demo I am not sure how to upload that, I would have to go google it.

Spacing, punishes, hitconfirms, conversions, whiffpunishing, baiting, blocking, teching, not getting frame trapped, adapting to your opponent, the list just goes on

and most of it changes based on the character you play and they play

>all the people who said "Just keep applying, you'll get something eventually" are still wrong
this is pretty much truth. my cousin was unemployed for 8 months. he was applying fucking everywhere and never got anywhere.

he bumped into an old friend on the street, and note i'm talking about someone he knew literally half a decade ago, and told the old friend about how he was struggling to find a job.

the old friend talked to a manager at his job and literally less than a week later my cousin was working. he's still at that job to this day and loves it there.

trying to get a job without nepotism in this day and age is fucking pointless

just playing is not the most efficient way to improve either, if you dont focus your efforts on what you need to it takes vastly more time to get through certain plateaus
>>
>>128475543
If you're losing for hundreds of hours and not winning more than once in a while, that's more of a personal problem or anything. It means that you're incapable of learning from your experiences and mistakes. It means you're lacking some very basic human fundamentals that allow you to slowly improve through repetition and practice.

That, or you're just doing the same things over and over and expecting to just win eventually.
>>
>>128475543

Is that so hard to understand? Even when we are hiring at my job, the first people they ask before help wanted signs even go up are the employees. If you trust your employees then you trust them to bring in somebody who will work as well as listen to the same employee who brought them in. Bringing in somebody new can be more trouble than it needs to be.

You do not need to know anything related to frames. You just need to know if you block x, you can do y to punish it or it is safe or it is plus and they are still on the offense. MOst of that can be learned by PLAYING THE FUCKING GAME. Like at worst, you go into training and have honda buttslam you and try to antiair it, srk it, teleport away, backdash, whatever until you find something that works. You dont need to know frames of any moves for that.

It's kind of strange that people consider ST to be a good place to learn fg fundamentals when that game is completely unlike 95% of the other games in the genre
I would even say that if you main ST, you probably don't even like the fighting game genre as a whole
>>
>>128475627
Some of those things are hard and other impossible to practice on your own in training mode.
So I'll assume you mean to play actual matches against other people and focus on practicing those aspects.
But that's the really fucking hard part for a new player.
Even understanding those consepts on base level it can be overwhelming to try to use or even properly focus on them.

Or maybe it's just me and I have faulty brain and everyone else in the world are perfectly fine adjusting to several new concepts in competitive situation.
>>
>>128480802
this is true but almost everything in st is an applicable skill in other games and not really the reverse

the only thing st is really missing is anime combos
>>
>>128481180

The biggest problem is that people want to win, which isn't weird at all, but because of the depth of this genre, people who have a headstart on you will just shit all over you and you have to put your ego aside, take the Ls and attempt to learn from them, but if you don't know why you lost even that's hard to do, so certain concepts like frame trap, tick throw and even if you can't do apply them, recognize when someone else is doing that and learning from that

Focus on one particular thing every match until it's automatic, for a new player, doing unsafe shit is probably the first thing

What's even the point of doubletapping in SF5? Have plinkbabies gotten so used to exploiting their way into combos in SF4 that they can't manage 3 frame links consistently without training wheels?
>>
>>128480802
youre right, I mean pisss has basically admitted this
>>
Why did they make Ryu's parry fucking suck?
>>
>>128481740
doubletapping is decades older than plinking faggot
>>
>>128481939
its to marginalize fireballs. thats all.
>>
>>128481939

Like most things in SFV it's a commitment
>>
>>128482102
but it has so many recovery frames even on successful parry. I understand it having a shitload of recovery on a fail but fucking come on
>>
>>128481939

I think it might be useful for just 1 or 2 particular tools that each character uses for offence. For example, Mika charged HK is a free in but it pretty hard to SRK on reaction. Parry it and punish, it's just a single tap of mp+mk. Zangief charged HP is another. I'll probably be sitting in training mode for a while on release to see what would be decent parry food.
>>
>>128481379
ST gets really gimmicky. If its trying to teach me how to get really gimmicky sure. It isn't all about fundamentals like people say it is. It's not all Ryu mirror matches like people make it sound
>>
>>128482269
it puts heavy emphasis on spacing which is a very good skill to apply to other fighting games
>>
>>128482269

ST is only about fundamentals if you know the match ups completely and how to beat various things, otherwise you're just gonna get fucked and have no fun at all or even learn anything
>>
>>128482269
play a good sf2 game like HF if you want pure honest fundamentals and no ST style gimmicks
>>
>>128479649
If you have to ask that and not know why hes off of the panda, just off yourself brohemo.
>>
RAW POWER
>>
>>128482269
it has those gimmicks but in getting good at avoiding them you learned space control without realizing it

the thing about ST is there are few side solutions for most matchups other than just playing smarter/better so it forces you to learn things, where in lots of other games you can learn tons of things that will make you win lots more without ever improving your spacing or ability to control your opponent

>>128482658

sf4 and st are on polar opposites in terms of how they handle neutral

st has lots of situations where certain things are guaranteed and always a good idea if you can get in a position to do them

sf4 there are tons of ways to bait and massively punish actions that would be smart in almost any other fighting game and everything is special cased to the matchup and situation

walkspeeds in sf4 also contribute a lot to that specific complaint damdai has because you can't apply ground pressure and be close enough to get a guaranteed dp by predictively walking unless your char's walkspeed is very high

It's mostly there to parry meaty hits, fireballs, and character-specific attacks. It's not supposed to be some universal parry that gives you automatic frame advantage on everything.

Yesterday I really played a fighting game for the first time, and it was Ultra Street Fighter IV. I played online and mostly got bodied, although I eventually started to get a better idea on what I had to get down (stuff like executing DPs as soon as I wanted one out, waking up with something, etc.).

Posts here have been making me start to think that Street Fighter IV isn't a great game to start with if I want to more than anything get a good UNDERSTANDING of fighting games. Do you think there are any older Street Fighter games that would be better to start with, such as ST or Third Strike?

>>
>>128483935
no don't listen to anyone here every single street fighter is filled with gimmicks and shit that is not helpful for new players. Everyone will tell you how dead ultra is and how bad it is to learn fundamentals but if you play third strike you'll just eat a parry os into unblockables setups and if you play ST you just get knocked down and memed on. Play whatever feels the most fun.
>>
>>128483935
SF4 is fine as long as you put actual effort in getting better and don't play brainlessly. If you want to get better you will get better with any game, if you don't put in the effort you'll stay shit with every game.
>>
>>128483935
sf4 is the only game as bonkers and special cased as it is that gets widespread play

you will learn things playing any fighting game that are applicable to other games but the focus of any individual game is going to be really different

imo st does the best job at teaching you a range of skills but you should just play whatever appeals to you -- someone who plays a single game a ton will nearly always be better at it than someone who spends more time playing a range of games
>>
Will my bnb of jab jab throw finally be viable in SFV??
>>
>>128483935
Don't listen to them. Ultra is a great game and teaches what you need to know. The further back you go in fighting games, the more retarded they are. None of the bad stuff in ultra compares to the bad stuff in the older games.

sf4 is probably the best fg for a beginner right now. every other niche/old game is full of people who've been playing since they were born, at least in sf4 you can find absolute beginners if you search by same skill in ranked

There are definitely some crubs on 3s fightcade too if you'd prefer to learn on that game, sf4 has a slower pace though so it's probably easier as a beginner
