Did have some ideas for a sort of alien forge a bit ago, something to find in the asteroid rooms.
Depending on the molds you put in (Either hand made, or acquired from another alien machine), and the ores, would change its statistics (Phazon would have some armour avoidance, bananium would make it slippery to hold and slip those who walk on it, gold would mean better conductivity, etc.)
