Dirty Bomb's a free to play FPS and successor to games like Enemy Territory or Brink

No. Merc unlocking system is very similar to LoL's champion unlocks.
There are also loadout cards with different rarity, but those aren't going to make you less shit at the game, and everything above bronze is purely cosmetic
You can easily craft them by trading up the dozens of crap lead cards you get

Sparks is a rezer, Bonerz is a healer, so they don't replace each other.
Also I would never buy the loadout, I've always traded up the ones I want, even if it takes more time. This way you also get trade up fodder.

I am a terrible Proxy but theres something about putting mines in stupid places and seeing the kill notifications and giggling to myself means I can't stop doing.
I took a gamble on getting a Proxy gold and got this, think I'll just go back to my Flying Pig and Drilled Bronze. Lost a Kira that I never used, a Phantom that I can't, a Vaseline and a Stoker that I can't used.

This happened to me and some good players and we managed to do the entirety trainyard in less than 5 mins.

Dreiss is fun as hell, but you'll likely do better with the other burst rifles. Thankfully 2 of the 3 Dreiss loadouts are great for Arty. The even better news is that both of them are just as effective when you get them in Iron form so you won't have to waste so much money trying to get a Bronze. Hell, D43 is great in Lead because all you need is Unshakeable from the loadout really.
These are the best Arty loadouts. A lot of people will tell you the Dreiss is shit, and while that is somewhat true against players with better aiming than you, it's still a good weapon against a lot of players. You're not always going to be running into all stars. Keep with it if you like, but also try the burst rifles.

I've been playing Fragger as well and he isn't as effective at helping her the team completely wreck people if they're spread out from one another. Thunder can blind everyone looking at you if you know where to throw. Lie for the construction building I can get a kill or 2 with Fragger or I can use Thunder and just mow everyone down while they panic.

Trainyard last and Underground first attacking are great for this. Notes on sentry placement:

execution mode sucks because too many abilities in this game are completely effortless and have the ability to wipe a significant portion of a team.
for example all a proxy has to do is place a lucky mine and you can lose 3 people, or hell skyhammer and kira can both wipe entire teams easy if the situation is right.

Focus on getting mercs before cards
Make informed decisions on what mercs you want. Bear in mind, mercs share weapons for the most part, so start by finding a weapon you enjoy using.
All loadout cards for a merc can be viewed in the store. Only 9 cards exist per merc, and anything above bronze is purely cosmetic. Additional perks are nice, but are NOT a substitute for skill.
Don't hold down m1 on auto weapons if you're out of CQC. Even then, still try and burst fire.
ADS (aiming down sights) on shotguns gives them reduced spread.
If anything else, use your fucking abilities jesus christ. Oh, and Aura and Skyhammer are two of the strongest mercs in the game.

Sparks : Self healing vaseline that can revive from any range and has a superior hybrid of the moa pdp with no ammo or meaningful resource system. Incredibly fast, super tiny hitbox lets you just sperg away from any bad fight you wont faceroll instantly with the railgun. Also has a buch of weapons on top of her already broken railgun because why not?
Rhino : It's totally okay to have a character that is either absolutely 100% worthless or 100% impossible to deal with. Obviously since you dont know what the fuck you are doing you think that letting people tap the minigun to make it into a super accurate BR on steroids with infinite ammo is totally fine. Yet again a character that has a super good primary weapon also has two other very good weapons for no fucking reason.

A typical casual isn't accurate enough to use Sparks, Rhino or Fletcher efficiently. Because of that they have to 'adjust' them to be more casual friendly. Of course in the right hands, these mercs will roll face.
At the same time mercs like Proxy who desperately need a buff or better weapons won't be improved anytime soon, because your typical casual is attracted to mines like bees to honey. In their opinion Proxy is OP as she gets 'two free kills'.

Nader is amazing always in comp. Rhino also has his uses. So 3 of the 4 Assault mercs are used in comp. Fragger is obviously always used, so if that's what you mean by viable, as in, always used, then yes there is only 1. But don't pretend like Nader isn't there frequently. Rhino less so, but he has his uses on maps like Underground, Terminal and Bridge.
Though I agree with Thunder needing buffs. I've posted it before, so did another anon, but I think him having 2 grenades would be great. One Flash, one Concussion. Would really mix up how you could use him and he could actually push properly with his slow ass speed.
I doubt anyone will agree with me on this one, but I think he should also have more HP for how big his fucking hitbox is. 170 would be great. That way he could be another kind of Fragger, but have some different uses. I mean 160 is nice, but his hitbox is huge, he's slow, no one dies from his ability. If he had the 2 grenades and more HP, he might be able to effectively time the two effects together so he can actually make a push, instead of waltzing in shortly before everyone can see again.
I mean as it is now, Fletcher and Stoker are better options to lead a charge than Thunder. That's not right.

There is more to it than just sensitivity but it's a start for most people. I'm running 800 dpi and 5 in-game sensitivity and it still feels too high sometimes.

his grenade can be used very frequently, but be careful not to flash yourself
and don't use his crappy machine gun. It is awful. I like the timik on him, but the stark is a fine choice two. Both weapons have big drawbacks on him.
My favorite loadout is the timik loadout with spares, as skyhams on my team never feed my gun.
I really like thunder and I hope you do too, but he is not one of the better mercs.

Thunder is really shit right now. Unless you know you can catch and kill those in front of you, don't. Back off while you can and push in later (possibly with help). I say this because most players who aren't bad will do a 180 once they get flashed and start running (don't follow them).
Thunder's only real strength right now is that he's a 160 HP merc with a timik/stark. Take pride in the fact that playing thunder means you're playing a direct downgrade to Fragger.

I've actually been gradually lowering mine from 20 in-game to 16 now (still 1800 dpi), but you don't need to lower sensitivity that drastically to get better results. People who are used to playing high sens should just stick to it or slowly turn it down over a period of time, they'll eventually build discipline and learn not to jerk their mouse too hard when panicking, and also use movement to help adjust their aim
My accuracy stat has actually been going down slightly by 0.1% points ever since I just felt like lowering my sens one day, was shaking too hard that I needed some sort of minor placebo to help keep it under control

If you get a chance to hit all your shots then ADS, zero spread is awesome. A lot of people ignore ADS almost completely, I say try it out whenever you see a good opportunity where trading away movement won't matter a lot (plus you can even jump and still be 100% accurate).
