I prefer balanced but usually go for narrow because I want fast.

Raiden IV: OverKill has this weird quirk with the music where it fades in instead of starting normally. Might just be my own PC's sound settings.

That's aside from the other music issue where some music in later stages doesn't loop properly, but hopefully the fan patch fixed that. R4OK is still fun, otherwise. I'll play 4 a lot more over 3.

>>127568342
Sometimes I go for a balanced shot that's in between wide and narrow, but I usually fall back on the narrow shot/fast ship (DDP and Mushi, for two).

I've been playing some Cave shmups recently, and I'm having fun, but I feel like I must be bad. Not "the games are hard," but "I'm bad."

I've maybe put 4 or 5 hours into DoDonPachi DaiOuJou and I can really only get up through half of level 3 consistently on one "coin." Is this normal? How long is "normal" for being able to even reach the final stage consistently?

I feel your pain, but I beat another mission and moved onto greener pastures with the Assault Silver-Hawk Burst.

Have you noticed that the map is basically a timeline? The left side of the map is going over battles that happened in the past, hence why you are often assigned older ships (Origin, 2nd, Gaiden), while the right half is future missions and you use newer ships such as the Next and Assault more often.

Check the dates.

Oh yeah, what might help
Use your fixed burst as a defensive tool. That's what makes the Next Silver-Hawk so great in the first place, is that it's much better at defense than the Legend on account of the fixed burst turning more quickly when you try to aim it. It allows you to keep your movements tighter too so that you won't strafe into other shit AND keep up your fire more often.

Actually I find looping the game for hours and hours the most retarded scoring system of all. It completely trivializes anything you do from moment to moment because the only deciding factor to your score is how long your local game center is open for. What's even worse is they then decide some arbitrary stopping point like 10,000,000, which isn't even a counterstop, and stop counting anything after that mark. Congratulations, your 15,000,000 score that took you 9 hours is just as good as that guy's 10,000,000 score that took him 6 hours.

I have seen a few people who try to optimize their individual stages though, and that's pretty cool.
>>
>>127638314
That isn't the scoring system's fault, that's just a side-effect of an infinite looping shmup.

Are you using formation or trace? Formation seems like the better option, but trace can be positioned to deal with the bugs that are coming from the sides of the screen and stuff like that.

What specifically are you having problems with?
>>
>>127658242
It's the hardest stage by far to score on all modes. Instead of having just one midboss where you raise the counter a lot you have to do that throughout the whole stage, and you have to stall a lot between sections or you lose everything. I never bothered learning it because it's too frustrating.

On Original you have this stupid trick that only superplayers do where you leave some of the parts alive at the beginning and they continuously spit out small bugs for you to destroy. Almost no one does it because it's extremely dangerous and dying costs you much more score than you get by doing the trick in the first place.

Formation usually, and it's really just survival at the final segment when all 3 portions of the insect are firing at you at once. I mostly just play Mushihimesama when I'm taking a break from DBCS though, but honestly for the moment I think it's just a matter at getting better in general. I gotta focus on not dying before I can focus on scoring. Game is fun as hell at least.

Help me out /shmupg/. I'm interested in shmups that feature elements of other genres or feature design choices that make them completely unlike the typical shmup.

These can be true hybrid-genre games, but these can also be predominately traditional shmups with a little bit of something else mixed in.

They don't have to necessarily be that good, I'd still like to play them for myself. And even if they are obviously terrible I'd still like to know about them and catalog them.

Lethal Application is a peculiar game where you move around by shooting in the opposite direction, kind of like that one Maui Mallard level. The final boss is intense. It's freeware, check out the wiki.

There's also Sora, which just came out on Steam. It's a fast paced shooting game with lots of shot cancelling and a dash that bypasses beam weapons. There are a few weapons with continuous fire like in most shmups but the majority have recovery frames which can be shortened by dash cancelling. That makes it similar to action games like Mega Man Zero, minus the platforming.

Can you all help me on Touhou 8?

I can't seem to get all time points required for stages 2/3/allothers no matter how much I try.

The problem overall is this: Getting time points during stages is easy, I just need to be human and kill everything. When a boss appears it gets complicated though. I usually switch to phantom but until I get my phantom gauge to 100% I already killed off one of the boss' stages. Then I try to graze everything (I literally move out of my way to graze them) but it's still not enough in the end and I end up 1000 time points away from the goal. What am I missing here?

I tried completing the bosses only as human because it seems to net way more time points than as a phantom, but it's still not enough and I still end up lacking time points (all that while dying every now and then because human mode is too fast)
>>
>>127674510
You get time points when you end a boss' stage, though it could just be spellcards, so use that to switch to phantom rather than switching by shooting. Other than that, your best bet is just not dying since that will make you drop time.
>>
>>127674908
So I should just do the fight while human and when the spellcard is about to end I go phantom mode to finish off and continue as phantom?

That sounds interesting although I'm not sure if it would really net me the 1k time points I am missing, but I'll try
>>
>>127674992
It might, since you'll be getting all the time from shooting as human and dying less afterwards. Are you sure you're doing well in the stages?
>>
>>127675113
Anon I was missing 2000 this time, what the heck

And yes I'd say so. I mean, what is doing well? I'm pretty new to Touhou but during stages I just kill everything while picking up stuff on the collection zone

Also I am not dying even once, I'm tying this on Stage 2 Normal so it's pretty difficult to die

I do and I still can't figure out what they do

Actually I realized that during boss fights they keep switching between phanton and human repeatedly, literally smashing the shift button over and over multiple times a second apparently, but when I try that it does nothing at all. I assume it's for them to have better control over movement or something

It's sort of ridiculous because in replays they end up with 2k time points more than they need while I am here doing the same things and missing 2k, it looks like I am missing something major here

>>127675697
This entire slave thing is confusing, I tried going through the entire stage 1 without killing anything, they just appear on the screen, shoot and then leave, there's no slave spawning involved
>>
>>127676191
>This entire slave thing is confusing, I tried going through the entire stage 1 without killing anything, they just appear on the screen, shoot and then leave, there's no slave spawning involved
Ever notice that some enemies disappear when you killed another enemy? Those enemies that disappear are the slaves. Leave them alive and kill the "master" enemies. That's what I meant by "doing well in the stages"; for most stages I've met the requirement before starting the boss fight.
>>
>>127676439
Oh, those shiny things? I think I know what those are

Guess I have to constantly switch between phantom and human to kill all enemies while human and avoid killing slaves. Meh, this sounds like a boring mechanic to be honest, I can't even 1cc this on normal difficulty and now I have the extra challenge of being forced to adopt a certain playstyle
>>
>>127672308
>I thought the biggest issue with it is that it's really meh.

Pretty much that. I don't think Raiden III is bad. It keeps things simple, but it also keeps things simple, you know? I think that works against it. Maybe because it was a new start for the series going into 3D. Also, R3's Green Proton Laser is SHIT.

Raiden IV seems to cut loose more, OverKill adds more features, and not only is the Plasma Laser back, the Proton Laser was overhauled so that it's not garbage.

Thanks. Never heard of most of these (all except Nuclear Throne and Undertale) and some are pretty interesting. Checking out Sora right now.

Has there ever been a shmup which is tries to be like action adventure games and/or RPGs in the sense of having a persistent, explorable areas? But not in a separate "mode" that switches to different gameplay.
>>
>>127669838
Most of the shitposting about Undertale (on /v/ at least) is blatant false flagging anyway.
>>

Are you really being triggered by a video game about poorly drawn anime girls shooting lasers and stars at each other? If you're not having fun with the games at all, maybe you should just stop as there's not much that can be done to change that.
>>
>>127669838
>Undertale

>>
>>127678196
> I never get to find the final boss because I arrive too late

I'd just focus on not using continues then. If you can 1cc the first 5 stages, you will make it to the final stage without running out of time. Since there are two versions of the final stage (final A and final B) and you need to 1cc in order to both reach and complete Final B you might as well stick with that approach.

If you want to use continues and are getting this frustrated over the time mechanics, then its time to adjust the starting lives and difficulty level.
>>
>>127647585
Most shmups run good on WINE, I've noticed.
>>
>>127679870
Edit: to add, I never bothered paying attention to the time mechanics when I played until years and years later. I honestly can't recommend someone do so either their first time.

I also seem to recall that difficulty levels play a weird role in how easy or hard it is to get time bonuses, to the point where I felt it for some stages it was either incredibly difficult or virtually guaranteed depending on my difficulty level. Again, don't worry about it and try to play the game as if it is only about not getting hit.

Is there any part in general you're having troubles with? RefleX is all about managing that shield, knowing when you can safely let it recharge and what patterns of bullets you should redirect back at the bosses.

Also your shield recharges faster if you're not firing in case you didnt know.
>>
>>127711931
It was mostly just dodging without the use of shield, also does the shield reflect projectile attacks (missiles and such)?

I sampled ALLTYNEX Second just now though and that has some cool stuff going on so I think I want to put time into that in the coming future.
