I think the franchise won't really die as long as video games are a thing. If Sega went under right now I wouldn't be worried about Sonic's continued existence. I think its unlikely it will ever blow up huge like it did in the Genesis/Dreamcast era though. There are too many AAA series now, and it also doesn't need to be pushed super hard because a consoles success isn't depending on it.

It's been going on for 25 freaking years, with quality ranging from "excellent platformer" to "literal shit", and has kept chugging along whether people want it to or not. Unfortunately, you're right. I think a part of it is that Sega's better IPs (NiGHTS, Shenmue, Ecco, etc.) lean more toward the "cult classic" end of the scale and only ran for a game or two. It'd be an awesome underdog story if one of them succeeded, but considering NiGHTS: Journey into Dreams' flop, the odds are slim.
It'd probably be better for them to make an IP out of whole cloth rather than dredge up the past like a certain black hedgehog.

I'm writing in because I ordered the World's Unite Collectors Edition subscription bundle that includes the variant covers and battle books and they haven't sent me shit.
