Here's the situation. My fps dropped hard while adventuring in a fortress. I have since concluded that this is something particular to the fort itself and not to my computer or the game. I searched the archives over at Reddit and found that some people had problems with giant underground cities of trolls crashing their fps when spawning inside of a fortress.

If it is an underground city of trolls, what can I do to recover my fps? Can I limit the pops of trolls in underground caverns through world creation?

This is sad. Looking through LegendsViewer I found a dynasty of human leaders who personally led their civilization in war but lost every battle despite inflicting humongous casualties. I wanted to learn about the rise and fall of this vainglorious dynasty but nobody seems to know or care about them.

Also, regarding multi tile creatures:

The test dragons had separate limbs and a neck with a 157-yen head and a slinky tail, and you wouldn't be able to hit any part you aren't next to. I'm not sure about all of it though. It's harder to make random and mod creatures look good, and the tileset issue is also large and multi-troubling... though I don't want to go with a block/blob approach either. The counter-pressure is that trees and other future features are going to make one-tile giant creatures sillier and sillier, until they become too silly. Tall creatures are harder since you can only see a slice of them, so they always look bad, but the idea is that you'd be able to jump on them and the dragons and be on a specific body part, if we are lucky enough to make it work at all.

Currently, killed leaders are just replaced by new ones, either from the hist fig pool(relatives of the deceased, most of the time) or from the pops(resulting in new important hist figs without any backstory). I'm not sure, but I think Toady will add succession conflicts and civil wars later on, which would accomplish what you're looking for.

Succession conflicts are already in as far as I understand it. Problem is that they more often than not get resolved faster that it would be of use to a fortress.

So I think it does have indeed have an impact on gameplay, it's just very miniscule.
In the end the issue is that a specific king currently has too little effect on the overall political situation. From what I see, the political stance is generated from other factors and a new ruler just adapts to it again. His personal skills don't have much effect consequently.

Shit, I had an un-copied book taken from a goblin corpse stolen by a human scholar. So I retired the fort and started an adventurer, and sought her out in her home village, where she was STILL HOLDING THE BOOK. I let her live, since I didn't want to upset her husband who was in the same house, but I wrestled the book from her, then stopped the conflict and brought it back to the fort.

Holy shit, the game actually keeps track of hist figs' owned items, even as they leave the scope of gameplay and years pass.

History already exist as a discipline among scholars in the current version. Fort mode scholars will write about any subject that they've discussed ever, though, so actually getting your historians to record history is pretty hard. Still, they shit out a history book ever now and then. Most of the time, it mentions a few historical events in a certain civ or site. Biographies/autobiographies mention events in a certain hist fig's life.

One good way to manipulate your dwarves into writing certain kinds of literature is to buy manuals on how to write that lit. For example, titles with "your own history" in them will teach any dwarf how to write their autobiography(although only scholars will do it, and only if they happen to feel like it).

I am a history major. I was hoping this game would stroke my history boner with all of its world generation. It kind of does, but the experience is incomplete. Too much of the information is locked away either in the game code or hidden deep in Legends mode and can only be explored to the fullest extent through third-party utilities.

What I have found fascinates me. Look at this pic. There is a story being told here. The military commander of the attacking humans is the king of his civilization - a brave warrior following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by leading the armies of his people. The leader of the defenders is a brave goblin commander who has defended his nation against numerous invading armies.

The stories of both commanders end in tragedy; this battle was a horrible catastrophe for both sides, the humans never won a single battle against anybody despite a superior kill:death ratio, and the goblin commander was slain treacherously by a rogue dwarf shortly after his Pyrrhic victory.

This should be a Trojan War-esque event remembered for all time by both civilizations. Instead it's just as likely to be referenced by an engraver or scholar as Angus McNobody's thrilling tale of making chicken soup on a Sunday.

This game has the potential to be a fantastic history generator, but it doesn't make sufficient use of what it already as. I would not have uncovered any of this stuff without using the utility. It would be amazing if I could uncover it all as a wandering historian in Adventure Mode.

What fascinates me the most is that a goblin army led by an ordinary goblin, rather than a demon, actually managed to stand firm against a superior force. It's usually the demon commanders who do most of the killing.

From what I've seen, the goblins get slaughtered no matter what. The demon commander only makes it so they win despite losing their entire army. Apparently the demon only has to show up on the battlefield and kill a few humans to cause a rout.

As for other races, elves live forever so they usually have that one princess who becomes a badass general and remains in control of the armies forever.

Pic related is showing a war between Elves and Dwarves. There were 7 different pillagings of the Dwarven settlements. The devastation of the conflict caused the Dwarves to go extinct at the hands of megabeasts shortly afterwards. 1 person died in the war

In 10 or so years you might. All the recent development points towards just that. At least now historians actually write books, and since 40.xx the world continues after you finish worldgen. In the next few years, we'll see myth generation, basically whatever happens before worldgen.

Looking further, there are even dev goals that tie into this, specifically "adventurer role: explorer" might be worth a look.

As a side note, the way worldgen battles are computed is a bit weird. IIRC, it's a series of 1vs1 battles, so a single strong person on one side could easily kill an entire army.

There's an advanced worldgen option to hide all historical events so that you can discover them with your adventurer by reading engravings, looking at statues, looking at figurines and examining decorations on items. Some events probably never make it into any depictions in the world, but a lot of them do. Kobold caves and night troll lairs are a good place to find a lot of interesting history.

This game has become too easy, I really can't seem to lose or experience any !!FUN!! if I tried.

The new stuff, while cool, if anything just makes the game easier as trained soldiers will come to your fortress and temples help manage dwarf happiness.

How would you make the game harder in a real way? Food and drink are piss easy to get. Combat gets harder but a well trained squad will just slaughter hundreds of goblins no sweat. Even with megaprojects and the weird different themes to my forts, the ending is always the same, and I meet generally little resistence getting there.

I feel like this games reputation for its insane difficulty is pretty undeserved when its so easy to set up a lasting fortress.
