I'm now on a server with three other friends, but it's an official PVP server.
I did some reading on ARK and it seems many players prefer unofficial servers to official ones, with one of the reasons being less grind.
Now we're not too big on grinding and have abandoned many games before for that reason. Would it be best to look for an unofficial server?
Additionally, the server we're on now hardly spawns any dinosaurs, which makes acquiring meat and leveling pretty difficult.

You set your own goals, it's a sandbox. You can build autistically of you want or quit after taming a few dinos. Most of the fun is early game before you can fend off everything with no problems.

A friend and I got the game the other day and he quit after 10 minutes of dying. I spent hours fighting hunger and traveling safer areas with some random kid who filled the mic with chatter. You might want to try dinos n chill. It has boosted xp and gather rates so you won't lose too much. The map the server is running has milder climate so it doesn't require fur unless you want to live on the ice island.

You can always try the valhalla server. Don't let the pvp boogieman scare you off, the players are mild. It's a large map and easy to hide early bases if you are concerned.

The private server I was playing shut down, so me and my group of friends found a new one and after raiding for a bit some fag ragequitted and now the admin wants to turn it into a primitve server to make raiding harder.
We talked him out of it for now but we dont trust him.
So we thought about just buying our own server, but after looking into it a bit I'm not sure if it's worth it. Most active private server seem to be that way because of a real active administration, weekly events and give-aways and whatever, and we dont want to do that.
So.. is there a reliable way to get maybe 10-20 people to actively play on a new private server? Dont want to buy a server and then have nobody playing on it.

Well they added in Co-Op which was fucking retarded because it essentially doubles the work they have to do which is terrible when the game lacks a defined goal and content.
They are unable to get rafts to work despite being in the game for 1+ year.
They constantly *fix* bugs which you find out are not actually fixed when you go to play.
The cannibal AI is godawful and is not nearly as good as people claimed it was.
Buildings lack a point.
Game is terribly unpolished
Combat is equally awful.
Also when the game first came out you couldn't save and cannibals would dissapear from the entire island.
After they added saving, there was a bug that would make it so your inventory would bug out and be unusable.

The server has been quiet recently because of people on vacation and traveling.
The only raider I've seen harassing people is jak and I think he's cooled off a bit.
The server doesn't have gigas so your bug stone base isn't going to get cleared unless you really piss someone off. Your tames will probably get killed if you leave them out in the open, no baby mode "don't kill passives" on this server.
If you get harassed too much, I'll personally bring you some plant x/turrets so you can get established and fend for yourself.

Without getting into too much personal detail:
>have friend who isn't rich, spends steam $ sparingly
>convince him to buy ARK because every other game we share is unappealing
>launch game, play vanilla public PVE servers with him and another bro and try and we learn 2 survive
>its laggy as fuck but me and other bro look past that
>hes raging/bitching about glitchiness and other 'unfinished' aspects of the game
>4 hours later we die after being idiotic/experimental and attack a mean dino for food
>last straw, he loses interest immediately and uninstalls and tries to get a refund
>that fails, hes sour beyond reason
Guy just fucking abhors 'unfinished' games like this...
Granted we are playing the VANILLA version of the game and I'm aware that mods exist, but is there any mod that will make the game smoother or is it all just the same baseline clunkiness? I'd be willing to do a private game as well just to be able to smooth out the gameplay, those public servers seem to have a lot of trouble.

Never had a problem with gigas and only met one twice and I was flying, so dunno how strong they are at killing bases. But they look ugly so I don't mind them being gone.

The latest update was supposed to enhance performance and the following updates will do the same since the devs somehow get some carryover from xbox optimisation.
Aside from server lags, the game should run smooth if you have a half decent PC.

Tamed gigas take a lot of choice out of raiding and building bases. You can take one to offline raid a stone base and level it entirely relatively quickly. So a tame that takes 2 hours on officials can negate the need to farm for hours to get c4 or rockets to achieve the same effect.
Building should be a choice between time investment vs protection. But when stone basically gets relegated to a slightly more expensive wood, it forces you to build everything in metal or risk it being cleared out daily.
