They don't actually, BB's hitboxes are generally very good and the weapons are pretty much flawless with regards to their hitboxes.
phantom range is just latency. character positions don't stay synced in fromsoft netcode and don't resync every tick, which means registered hits on one players screen are whiffs on another. The game resolves this discrepancyy by assuming that all hits are true, but calculates iframes exclusively by the client performing the dodge.

In BB, the stamina cost of rolling is a fraction of what it is in souls games, and stamina regen by default is comparable to a green blossom in DaS1. Your tank refills so quickly that a big tank doesn`t make much of a difference beyond letting you hit R1 a few more times (note: note times than you need to.)

Is augur of ebreitas the best hunter's tool? It only costs 1 qs bullet, does good damage with high arc, knocks things over, and I've been using it as a slightly quicker alternative to stuns for visceral attacks.

They're similar to DaS2 summons: they deal no damage but have obscene amounts of health (though a little more reasonable in BB). They're basically aggro sponges, since they never back away to rethink their strategy or heal, the boss will prioritize them until dead.
The usually die in the boss' 2nd or final phase and function more like training wheels than legitimate help.

Only recently got the scholar myself for like £4 (discount + owning the main game and DLC), playing through it now the enemy/item placements make a lot more sense and there are far less completely empty areas. Kind of like exploring the game for the first time, but not quite
It's still DaS2 though, so playing with less than 100-105 Agility is ridiculous, but it is kinda fun.
Considering how much content there is, it's definitely worth it

It's just that I've made nearly every build I can think of in BB, save for heavy chalice diving required builds because I don't like doing them at all.

I disagree that Lords of the Fallen was worse than DaS2.
Lords of the Fallen was made by different people with different ideas, just with a somewhat similar feel or subgenre. To start with, it had classing and mandatory magic allotment. This is itself indicative that it was intended to be less choice-driven than any Souls game, just feel similar gameplay wise.
The worst part about that series in my opinion was enemy design/ai design. Their attempts to make enemies difficult didn't consider the fact that they were also making enemies annoying to face rather than requiring more skill.

Yeah, another disappointment to me was that the hammer-type weapons degrade to all club style weapons.
The starter hammer is...so...fucking...boss. Feels heavy, looks good, so nice. Moving on to generic clubs after that is such a downer. You never get another hammer like it either that I know of. I keep meaning to start a new game with light weapons.

I absolutely agree. I spent 15 minutes fighting them on a low level character just sprinting around the arena taking swipes at them when it was safe to do so. The motherfuckers have so much HP and hit so ridiculously hard. At about 10% hp I got pounded into the ground by a failure still in his spawn animation and blown away by magic as I was getting up.
That's when /bbg/ came to the rescue. Ludwig, Maria and Orphan are battles of skill at low level. Failures are a battle of patience
