Same world and move between houses.

For storytelling, everyone's in one world. I put characters I'm not using in an extras house with story progression and aging disabled, and then retrieve whoever I need from there. Traveler lets me move between towns once I have the people I need to shoot in a particular town.
For example, my save with the Castle kids is based in Moonlight Falls. For the robbery I staged in Bridgeport, I moved the twins, Lydia, and Elizabeth with traveler, set them up with the mansion as the home lot, and set the jail you see above as a no visitors allowed community lot. Testingcheats let me buy and pose on it with no issues.
In TS2, there is no progression, so putting people in different houses is fine. They'll wait as long as you need them to.
TS4's the problem. I haven't played it in a while, so I don't know. A trip to Windenburg for the Castle twins will happen eventually, with the goal being social engineering with the new groups or something. I'll figure it out someday.

Last bump for a while. Continued from above. I just moved a bunch of sims to Sunset Valley for the next story arc and they all got stuck. Clicking Go to Vacation Home caused overwatch to do a stuck reset and put them right where I wanted them. Hooray for easy bugfixes!

Everyone in that picture is genetically related. That's why they all look the same. And yes, I would like more control over their expressions, but to do that, I need to pose them, and sometimes interactions give a better picture than poses. The expression controls in the poser extension also just don't work sometimes. I haven't taken much in the way of screenshots in TS3. There's always room for improvement.

Well compared to the shitload of money you'd have to pay for all the packs plus base game, I'd say a few bugs here and there for the sake of getting it free is okay.
I purchased the whole Sims 3 collection with pretty much all of the expansion packs and while they're real nice to look at on the shelf, I'm not making the same mistake for 4. It's just far too expensive. A pack he and there for $40/$20 doesn't seem like much, but damn does it adds up.

There isn't really a way to avoid it, unfortunately. The more stuff you put into the game, the slower it loads. The worst offenders are Pets, Showtime, and Island Paradise. Avoid those unless you really want the content they offer.
You really don't need a ton of official expansion packs to have fun with TS3 though. As an example, World Adventures alone adds a ton of new content and goes a long way in making the world feel more "alive."

The Sims 3 will never run perfectly smoothly all the time (poor optimization on the game's part), but forcing on Vsync for the game through your video card settings or using some kind of FPS limiter is a must. That can help a lot with performance.
If you're getting skips and lags, or issues with sims not changing their clothes, try this fix:

Not sure, I use a pirated version. I can skip the launcher by using TS3W.exe file - it's buried deep in C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Game\Bin. It might be a different location if you're on Steam.

Are there any suggested starting mods for Sims 3? I see a bunch of places to pick them up in the pastebin but nothing too suggested.
Dance Machine trait just sucks in everyday life. Kinda cool to have a little more energy in clubs, though. Happy bonus doesn't matter, I believe vidja and TV gives more fun, anyway. And you have to dance regularly or get bored. All these problems just for one-time small boost to energy and energized mood. I dunno why I am so triggered with this shit, there are plenty of pure fluff traits.

Most of my saves have a sim that is partially a self-insert. In all my years playing I don't think I've ever had a save where all my original sims died - either aging is turned off or set to long. Usually I just level my sims' skills and careers. Honestly it's not much fun and I would probably have a better time if I gave my sims actual lives and personalities.
I also build or decorate shit when I get sick of the loading screens.

I just started playing it today but I can tell you a few things about it.
The days are a lot longer, it no longer takes half your to shower, shit, and eat
Open world is dead, you have to go to a loading screen any time you go somewhere in a different grid. Want to go to a bar? Loading screen. Want your other Sim to go the gym? Loading screen. Plus another to get back to your other Sim. It does seem to help certain things though. Destinations aren't empty as fuck because of that, they'll just send some people to make it worth the loading time.
Performance I dunno. I got a gtx 570 which is lower than recommended and it doesn't seem to tax my system at all.

Open world is kind-off killed, but honestly the loading screens are short and it's beneficial, considering it doesn't have to load all those people and lots in memory and keep track of it.
You can (limited) walk around the 'hood, but not enter lots. 'hoods are smaller but contained in a world (which contain multiple 'hoods), but you can visit different worlds too.
Honestly TS4 is doing mostly everything that it has, better.

Everything it adds is nice, but unless you plan on doing one of the three vocations it adds theres nothing else really added to the core of the game beyond aliens and an unfortunately really limited retail shop system.
Get Together adds almost nothing but some behavioral changes, like the ability to create clubs which are just glorified locked groups that have forced tasks based on what you choose for the club to do. Theres a lot of variety to those choices, but it ultimately adds nothing to the game.
The expansions just feel absurdly shallow, especially since the kind of crap they're adding feels like things they should be added as game packs or LATE-game additions.

4 is best yet. Has downsides sure. Collectables, meals and some other objects are way too low poly and blurry textured. No open world or world customisation sucks but you deal with it. No create a style hits hardest in how limited colour options can be, I'd take not being able to change materials and patterns if we could have colour back.
But the sims themselves look the best yet. Building is fantastic, everything before it is hot garbage in comparison. Improvements and refinements on core gameplay across the board. Oh and the game actually works? Can we mark that up as a positive? I have to admit I really do miss TS3's build mode. I could do some truly cool and neat things with that. At one point I was building a sewer system for my Nosferatu sim I was working on and it was starting too look completely badass. It's a bit of a catch 22 situation since you have to be so mindful of TS3's terrible sim pathing when making houses, while TS4 has really outstanding pathing yet a really wimpy set of tools to make houses with. TS4's pathing ultimately comes out ahead for me in the end though as it never ceases to amaze me how much clutter and odd spots I can put objects and still have a room be perfectly usable.

Club is freakin cheat. Remember in Sims 2 or 3 (I don't remember) in you can force someone to wash dishes or cook some food using authority points? So, didn't see it mentioned, but Oniki released 0.2.6 of KinkyWorld for TS3 as a holiday present; for those who aren't in the know, it's like Animated Woohoo, but instead of the lewd animations living in a vacuum, KW is linked to moodlets, a menstrual cycle simulator, sim reactions, diseases, vanilla woohoo settings, nraas woohoo settings, and some other stuff.
New version has bugfixes, morepets options, call girls and escorts, and base code for next public patch which will include a non-rabbit-hole school for those kinky catholic schoolgirl romps everyone keeps insisting exist.
There's some minor bugs (whoring options don't work with nraas register at the moment), but it's fairly solid and the most complete lewd mod for TS3 thus far.

Yes, and MC controller (with the optional woohoo module) is the best option here.
That being said, as with all modding communities, it really only comes alive if a) there are modding tools and/or modding the game isn't balls-stupid (I'm looking at you, DA:I) and b) there are no future patches that may or may not mess up the game. Oblivion, Skyrim, FO3/FNV modding didn't really reach a solid, finished-sheen sort of polish until a year or two after the game stopped producing patches/DLC. Similarly, TS3 is only starting to get decent lewd mods. In my opinion, having animated mods + tying those mods into the vanilla game so that, for instance, npcs react to those lewd mods, is key to the simulation aspect, and as such, TS3 lewd mods are far superior.

With just a few dozen mods and 2 expansion packs, I'm already seeing some minor performance drops here and there, particularly when you have multiple clubs hanging out on a full, moderately cluttered 60x60 lot. I find it terribly sad that EA's so insistent on not allowing or nurturing modding communities. Just look at the difference in modding between DA:O or ME and DA:I and ME3. Even with basic modding tools you can get fantastic secondary questlines. I mean as much shit as Bethesda gets for buggy and fairly lackluster games, there's still tons of interest in them because of their robust modding.
I mean, FO4 has, just as Skyrim/FNV/FO3 before it, taken/stolen a ton of fan-made content, polished it, and seamlessly improved on it. It has built-in HDT-type jiggle-physics and people are already messing around with mesh replacements, and the GECK tools aren't even out yet.

if I move a whole family to another city, parents and children, then all relationships and information are kept the same
BUT, when the oldest three teens of the family graduated and I moved them to another city they were no longer brothers and sisters, just "best friends"

Maybe the way they implemented it is that they have just removed the goals so you can't see them, but everything still gets rated. Sounds like something they would do.
