The Allagan visor only offers an aesthetically pleasing way of masking oneself on short notice, like for kids' parties, weddings, and emergency visits to Courtsean's coven. Technically, you'll have more fun as a DPS since you'll have less responsibility. You can start with Arcanist. It's a DPS that can go either DPS or Healer at 30. Scholar is the healer path and Summoner is the DPS path. There's a ton of responsibility that comes with being a tank or healer and they can both be pretty taxing if you have a poor group. Paladin's are pretty much the basic tank class with a very easy learning curve. Doesn't take much to be good at it, and it works perfectly fine as a tank. Warriors are different, it takes a bit of work to be good at it. A good warrior brings a ton of damage and makes runs a ton faster. Everyone is split between Scholar and White mage for healer. White mages have bigger heals and less attacks making it easier to heal but harder to deal damage and help in fights. Scholars have a pet that gives constant MP free heals and a huge MP pool and the healing is very dependent on skills that help minimize damage to make up for smaller heals. Tanking is probably more fun as a Dark Knight, but that's locked behind an expansion and the entire main story quest. Fun is relative though. I'd say go Scholar, but you'll need to get White mage to lvl 34 anyways because of cross class skills.

There are tons of discussions about that. Some of the ire for scholars in this thread at times may be some people shitposting. I personally micro manage mine and it's easy to get the hang of. And since it floats around on it's own it can be closer to people that'd need healing or buffs than you. Just have to target someone and tell it to do it's thing and it'll float into range. It helps with eager warriors that go ahead of you eagerly getting beaten to death. Early dungeons don't particularly need you to be that attentive and you could run them with a fairy automatically healing and buffing.
