It has something to do with invites, try joining directly, and if you can't, get someone in the party to invite you, sometimes certain people can't invite you since their nat settings don't allow you to join them, so ask someone else who is in the party instead.
If you have no one else in the party, you can always invite someone else and they can be the middle-man, this also used to happen in the 360 to people with strict nats.

Theres a public event called court of oryx in the most recent expansion
In it you can summon mini bosses and three big bosses that have raid like mechanics. One of them is basically a mini version of the raid boss Crota. The way you beat him is fairly simple. Kill a knight who drops a sword. Drop crotas shield which regenerates if damage isnt constantly applied. Once the shield is depleted he will kneel and can be damaged by the sword you pick up

That's a very old screenshot. When TTK dropped, they normalized the way Defense was represented on armor (Helms gave more def than Gloves or Boots, etc). Now they all read the same value to be on the same level (170 gear is all the same).
Take this Thorn for example: This shot was back during The Dark Below, and 331 was the max attack. But it's a year 1 item, and Bungie normalized the atk/def ratings of ALL items, so that Year 1 stuff maxed out at 170, but were just as strong as they were (just read a lower number).

If you're 284, you're not too far off. Spend some marks on something in the tower that might be holding your light back (helm, ghost, etc).
Nightfalls can also "help".
Vault of Glass, Crota's End, and Prison of Elders are all Year 1 activities, and won't have anything to offer that'll give you a direct upgrade if you're already above 170 light.

King's Fall I'd say has less 'cheese' than other raids, but I wouldn't exactly call it 'harder'.
The mechanics are sound; in that there are no real work-arounds for easy clears (Minus the One-Orb strat for Golgoroth, if that can be considered a cheese).
King's Fall requires competence from the whole team, baring some circumstances and special cases, so I'd say to watch some video guides if you're wanting to partake.
I'd say that in terms of difficulty, i'd rank them King's Fall>VoG>CE.
King's fall isn't THAT Much more difficult than VoG, but i'd say it is a bit higher.

i found a 310 twilight garrison from the Oryx challenge i found last week, but i infused it into my Crest of Alpha Lupi for trials. didn't really like how you can only activate it in the air, im not jumping around everywhere all the time. i was thinking of using An Insurmountable Skullfort with Transfusion and Overload. not a big fan of Striker's grenades since there are none you can stick to people. lightning nade can get you a kill once in a while in a control zone but thats about it from my experience.
