Can non-obviously enchanted items still have a positive or negative enchantment value, or a curse? I remember picking up a normal-looking dagger back in .15, only for it to be +2 (no brand, just a positive enchantment).
I also remember seeing some sort of experiment on the DCSS forums where a guy entered wizardmode, spawned 20 shortswords, and wielded them all, only for one of the "mundane" ones to be -1 or something.

Just had my first non-scummy ADOM completion with a gray elven wizard. Feels good, man.
I reached a point where basically every character that manages to save Khelevaster has a good shot at winning the game, unless I make some stupid mistake or get too hotheaded in a greater undead vault.
Came up with a plan that can consistently get my character OP, provided I can reach Khelevaster(spoilers obv.):
1. Start by going directly to the Small Cave
2. Get blanket, ~lvl 6 before proceeding to the dungeon
3. Hope I get an herb level so I can stock up on stomafilia, morgia and malerion. Train willpower, toughness and dexterity as far as herbs can take them- Wi and Dex will get to 25 naturally, To will get to the (low) potential maximum.
4. From HMV, proceed to Terinyo and get puppy&carpenter quests
5. Find altar in either puppy cave or carpenter dungeon. By this point I'm around lvl 14- stock of stomafilia allows me to sacrifice enough enemies to get crowned and post-crowned once. I got lucky and was gifted the robes of resistance(best wizard crowning gift) and the crown of leadership(only random helmet artifact in the game, I think?)
If I didn't get any herb levels before this point, I farm the big room and hope I get an altar in the upper CoC levels.
5. Quickly clear the pyramid, proceed to Dwarftown, do Thrundarr's first 4 quests(careful as fuck in the dwarven halls- previous character died to a great karmic wyrm tension room), get tactics and backstabbing skills from the gladiator.
6. Go to Ice Queen's Domain, get first quest.
7. Shitloads of XP from the quest dungeon, including a guaranteed greater vault with two artifacts. Lucked out here since it was a red dragon vault, and I got fire immunity from my crowning.

8. By this point, my wizard is strong enough to melee the golems guarding Darkforge's second level. I go to Darkforge and get a wish from the pools there, wish for an amulet of life saving, and save Khelevaster. I got two wishes here, so I also asked for spellbooks of Magic Map.
9. Clear water temple, eat snek.
10. Clear tower of flames, eat wyrm.
10. By this point, I'm ~lvl 28 or so. Now I visit the Minotaur Maze. Spam Magic Map and use teleport to make the maze as painless as possible. Get tons of potions of gain attributes from minotaur emperor, as well as a random artifact, potions of cure corruption, and his axe- my main weapon from now on.
11. Eat his corpse, gaining major gainsto both strength and toughness, while losing 8 points of willpower. I then retrain willpower back to 25 using herbs. It is only AT THIS POINT that I use all my stat potions, raising all of my stats by 10 points or so. This is where I visit the Ice Queen and complete her second quest, for more stat gains.
12. Tomb of the High Kings
13. Stash all breakable stuff in the Ice Queen Dungeon, raid the rift and the library, get the librarian's quest. Complete the quests for more scrolls of corruption removal, wear the crown of science, and read all of the books from the library. This trains my learning score by ~4 points which brings it up to ~40. This allows me to very quickly max out every useful skill.
From here, it's pretty straightforward. At this point I have enough corruption removal stuff to safely eat every boss corpse I find(along with the evil unicorn quest, granting ~6 more potions of gain attributes) and get ridiculously overpowered- I was able to kill Molochs and Titans with 2-3 melee hits, in addition to being a great spellcaster. It's all about getting through the early game in one piece, really- I still can't consistently get to the HMV. Maybe it's best to cut that altogether, and start with the puppy cave.

When you invest in magic shops for potential potions, it's not much more to start getting evolution potions to hoard then bless. Fairy hats are common enough on guard targets of an iwantit job that you can get one easily Food based resistances are fucking nothing. You can easily accumulate more as you go and even then, it's only 50 which is fucking nothing once you're investing in the armorer, black market, or really racking up dungeon clears and fame for higher item level loot with better attributes. Just getting an item with ## magic resist making all the food resists obsolete ikind of takes the piss out of it.

Hold life gives you a high chance to prevent XP drain and if you do get drained then that drain is significantly reduced.
Free action grants immunity to paralysis.
Warning does a few things:
>in town it will glow white to alert you to a town npc nearby
>in dungeons it will glow deep red (or maybe pink) to warn you of dangerous enemies nearby
>when you would walk onto a trap it will "pulse sharply" and ask for confirmation before moving
>when you would walk into the threatened area of a dangerous monster (IE their breath/spells/attack can hit you) it will "pulse sharply" and ask for confirmation before moving
It's mostly useful on berserkers since they don't naturally have any way to detect traps and a bad summon trap can and will kill you. Also handy because the area effect of breath spells is kinda hard to understand.
Regeneration does not stack.
Sometimes, you can equip it and ?RC or ?*RC* depending on the level of sticky curse (normal or heavy) and it may remove the AFC. This is almost always not the case though. Obviously permanently cursed AFC items can't be fixed this way.

I told him to look for Lair, he was the one who wanted to go ham and enter Orc. And switching to polearms was clearly the optimal decision given that trident, besides that Mi have good apts for everything and he wasn't at that high of a level in M&F so it doesn't really matter as much.
