>no military, traps, protective burrows, or anything yet
>some farmer who was outside gets infected, slaughters half the fort after turning
>when expedition leader dies, some other farmer stuck in a fey mood calls dibs

>farmerphant finally dies, normal business attempts to resume

It's like an abstract kind of fun.

so i did some experimentation since goblins weren't showing up in my worlds (40.42 to .43), and i noticed that apparently a civ having [default_site_type:dark_fortress] seems to prevent them from properly spawning on the world?
that, or they're both hidden and do absolutely nothing

do dark fortresses even work anymore?
>>
>>125922761
I think its just that they're going to closer dwarf civ sites then yours or that maybe you got the site cap size a bit too big and theres alot more sites that they'll go to first.
>>
>>125922761
everything seems normal to me, I've generated a dozen or so worlds since 42.x and they've all been rough the same, dark fort-wise
>>
>>125922703
Still haven't lost. All you need to do is hold off until migrants arrive and wall off that child somewhere terrible. Leave it toys. It will lose all hunger and thirst when it transforms so you never need to feed it, and being a child it doesn't have many needs so you don't have to give it odd jobs to keep it sane.

In fact, if you're willing to play the long game then I'd rely heavily on cage traps and feed her victims when she transforms.
>>
>>125922883
i've checked in the legends mode and they don't show up anywhere in the civilisations list when set to start with dark fortresses, even though kobolds do show up

i might make goblins the only playable race and see what comes about of that (or just give dorfs dark fortresses?)
>>
>>125922761
Civs using dark fortresses will only spawn if you have more than zero demon types. Turning demons off will also mean turning goblins off.
>>
>>125923560
Do you not know what they look like on the world map? You can gen a world and see immediately if they aren't being placed. No need to dig in legends or fiddle with the raws.
They're working fine; if they weren't, I promise someone other than you would've noticed by now.
>>
>>125923560
hm. looks like it -is- something i've done in the RAWs, but i can't tell what. dark fortresses simply don't generate.

ah well, time to start on a completely fresh copy of DF and work from there, maybe i'll find out what triggers this.
>>
>>125924415
i do - i was just checking to make sure that goblin civs weren't spawning at all.

>>125924260
huh, interesting
that's a point worth investigating, but i've only turned off bogeymen in the worlds i've played, though.
i just checked, though, and the worlds i was testing with have bogeymen set to 'none', but demons set to '20'
setting bogeymen to a nonzero number didn't change anything.
>>

Read http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Entity_token#Placement and figure out which of those you've changed for the [EVIL] entity. The only other thing it could be is bizarre worldgen settings that prevent any valid locations from existing, which is a lot less likely if you've been changing the raws. Really you should probably just redownload a clean copy of the game. If you've fucked something like this up then there's no telling what else you fucked up.

I'm looking to set up a library but the wiki page on the materials required is horrible. Can someone suggest a guide or example of a well constructed library?
>>
>>125925750
yeah i've already redownloaded, but i'm just looking through the raws now to see what went wrong
curiously enough, i copied clean goblin raws onto the old goblin raws (both creature and entity) and nothing changed - so it's outside of the entity/creature raws.

So these freeloading elf bards will finally be able to be directly controlled? Might be nice to strip them of their profession and throw them in the mines. Or better yet give them the woodcutter's job and let the woodcutter fuck around in the tavern all day for a while
>>
>>125925930
At least it wasn't into the well.
>>
>>125926318
some tables and chairs for the scholars to sit at
a couple bookshelves
a couple coffers or chests
some scrolls or quires

Thats all it really takes.
>>
>>125927642
At least theres that.
>>
>>125926318
Dig out a room, 10x10 should be more than enough. Build at least 1 bookcase, 1 coffer/chest, 1 table and 1 chair in the room.

With the zones menu, paint the room, make it a meeting area, press l, make it a library. Assign scholars if you want.

In an adjacent room(s) put enough space for a craftsdwarf workshop, a quern/millstone, a screwpress and a stockpile for pig tails.

With the quern/millstone, grind your pig tails into a slurry. Then press the slurry into pig tail sheets at the screwpress. You can turn the sheets into quires at the craftsdwarf workshop.

If you did everything right so far, a dwarf will come and put the quire into the coffer in your library. If you're lucky, a dwarf will even write on it. Make some book bindings, get some thread ready and you can bind the quire into a proper book.

Make more quires (or scrolls if you want to be a dickhead). If you've assigned scribes in addition to scholars, they'll make copies of your scholars shitty books about pulleys and their hometown.

The only time I gave anyone a gather plants order was at the start, 5 years ago. The best I can figure is it designated multiple fruit/trees since I did it over multiple z levels. ya, don't do that. If you do it at ground level they will gather fruit from every tree whos trunk is in that area, you don't have to designate the branches.

They'll still get stuck, mind you, but thats a single location where you can turn off fruit picking and leave them to collect shit off the ground

How do you fuckers manage to have tree problems? I haven't had a single dwarf die in a tree since 40.01.
Always have a meeting zone or a wagon.
Don't designate gather zones or plant gather jobs across z-levels.
Make sure you have stepladders.

If a dwarf does get stuck and you're doing everything right, they're probably only one z-level up and cutting them out of the tree won't kill them unless you've chopped down another tree next to that tree and there's loose logs already in the branches.

This isn't hard you fucks.

this. I know toady is planning to overhaul the whole light/dark/inside/outside thing at some point and I guess how dwarves choose what to clean will be bundled in with that somewhere, but it would be amazing even just to have a placeholder, a "cleaning encouraged here" zone designation maybe. I really like the idea of a surface tavern/depot setup to serve as a point of contact with the outside world for an underground fort, but in the current state it's just unmanageable. booze and vomit stains everywhere, and people going through soap faster than a steel weapon through a water FB to clean themselves because of it

Known issue. Not yet confirmed, but in my experience you need a very particular kind of world to ever see an age change during worldgen: tons and tons of civs on a medium or smaller world. The age will change very quickly to an "age of monster" or "age of monster and monster" depending on which megas/titans/etc get a kill streak first.

whoops, didn't mean to quote

>>125969702
it doesn't have pressure unless it's coming out of a screw pump
i'm not sure what you're doing but sometimes dwarves will sit in the pit they're channeling to do the next tile along, especially right after they've finished channeling that tile
when they're channeling from a pit filled with water this isn't too bad - they'll get covered in 1/7 to 3/7 water and step out, but when you're digging magma trenches even a 1/7 pool at his feet could put him in hospital for a fair while.

so it's best to channel everything out and have your magma's path made before you actually release the magma

also, when digging out a block to release magma into a tunnel or wherever, you should remove mining from all but one of your dorfs, designate the tile holding back the magma with 1 priority, then designate a mining spot somewhere else at a higher priority
this will make it so that he immediately turns around and moves away from the magma as soon as he finishes digging through the wall holding it back

previously this required you to have him do stone detailing or something similar instead.

>>125979538
You'll be able to make the new locations, and dwarves should use mugs/claim trinkets, and should have the new needs. They'll probably be able to tell stories.
Other than that, you won't get any of the new stuff, at least in fort mode. There won't be any music or poetry or dancing because no music, poems or dances exist. You won't get visiting performers or scholars because there won't be any performers or scholars in the world to visit you. There won't be any animal people in civilized pops. The only books in the world will be the ones written and owned by necromancers, and you won't be able to make more because no civ in the world will know the reactions to make paper.
You should be able to create dances and songs and poems with an adventurer if you're inclined to do so, though. I'm not sure how the musical aspect of that will work without the proc-genned instruments. And you could go steal necromancers' libraries to stock your own, I guess.

>>
>>125982130
make more booze, less goblets. My problem is I have a constant train of dwarves hauling goblets and quires to a stockpile and then back to their tavern/library. Clearly the setup needs some ironing out
>>
>there's an entire flying squirrel man civilization
Holy shit, is this new?
>>
>>125982524
I've tried that routine, it doesn't solve the problem as dwarves then get unhappy thoughts about drinking without a cup or goblet
this way they don't seem to get negative thoughts

I've found that having the only stockpile that accepts X placed inside the only location that needs X speeds things up a bit, although you still get loads of stupid hauling jobs
I tried removing those stockpiles altogether but then dwarves seem to forget the items exist (I had two dozen instruments lying on the floor of my last tavern while dwarves were "simulating" those same instruments 2-3 squares away, apparently unable to find them)

>>125982597

I am new at this game. I do not want to burn up my woods for my steel industry and I'm too much of a chump to figure out how to pump magma to the surface.

Will it work if I create a shaft and unload ores/coal into it from a mine cart to deliver supplies down 150 z levels? Obviously it would be in a separate room so my smelters don't get bonked on the head while working.
>>
>>125982905
from my experience dorfs won't dig a vertical shaft. They'll dig down ~5 z levels then climb out and won't go back down

I can only seem to get leaves.
>>
>>125983760
being a masochist is not an honor badge. You may find getting shit on by some goblins to be fun, but a lot of people have fun working with minecarts, fluids, massive constructions, all kinds of SCIENCE and other things. There is a tonne of things to do in this game. Fighting sieges is a very small part, and losing tonnes of work to one is only enjoyable to a very small subset of people.

Claiming sieges are the center of the game experience is nonsense.

There isn't.

If you see a "flying squirrel man" option among the standard races when you pick a race, it's because one or more of the playable civilisations has a considerable flying squirrel man population. Then, I guess it's possible for the flying squirrel man elements to take over the civ if they reproduce fast enough.

I don't disagree with your sentiment, but for a different reason. I think sieges are a trivial aspect of the game for an experienced player simply because they don't present any kind of challenge. Once you know how to set up a military, sieges are little more than a way to generate a thousand refuse hauling jobs with a couple dozen keystrokes.
>>
>>125986743
Some ideas for you:
>Make individual semi-self-sufficient villages and create intra-fortress trade
>Only build stockpiles for food/drink and trade goods
>Integrate bedrooms into workshop buildings rather than designating commieblocks of bedrooms
>Dwarvenezia- Channel canals throughout your fortress to eventually fill with wat- MAGMA

Anyone feel like farming gives you less now? I have multiple 5x5 forts pumping out plump helmets and I can barely feed my fort

I rely on caravans to supplement my food supply now, I can't live without it, mainly buying huge amounts of fruit and vegetables to brew

Tavern visitors are turned off btw
>>
>>125988817
You're right that it's a bug, but it isn't listed in the change log for the next release.
>>
>>125989426
not particularly. have you your workshop [o]rders to ONLY FARMERS HARVEST? once they get any kind of decent 5-10 range skill then they're pulling barrels of food out of the plot and you have an assload as usual.

plus you can always just gather plants, which nets absurd amounts.

Not that I can tell. Have you turned off cooking for brewables? Are you cooking at all? Are your edible plants stockpiled closer to your dwarves than your prepared meals? Are you using a lot of low level farmers?
Any or all of these things could be affecting your stock levels.
>>
>>125989426
Hmm, I was going to blame the fact that tavern visitors were drinking my booze for the fact that I had less than usual, but maybe you're right.
It still could be the way drinking works now, I guess, maybe even citizen dwarves use more.
But in 40.x I could very easily keep ~120 dwarves boozed up with 2 2x3 farm plots and a bit of herbalism, in this fort I have a dedicated full-time herbalist and 4 2x2 plots and I can only barely keep up, so maybe you're right
If so I think it's a good thing, farming was hilariously overproductive in the old version
>>
>>125989751
>Is they anon who created myne lurking?
Myne is a tileset. One of the oldest. I doubt an anon created it, and I can't see what it has to do with a fort planning utility.
>>
>>125989746
Maybe my problem is with my farmers skill levels, the highest is 5 but there are a couple 1 skill levels

The plump helmet plot was putting a pathetic amount of product per square which was then being brewed into a pathetic amount of wine
>>
>>125989426
nope, one small plot is still more than enough
>>
>>125989998
That's def your problem. Farmer skill = amount harvested. Stop letting jobless dwarves harvest and watch their skill level skyrocket.

As a stopgap, just select an entire z level for plant harvesting and make everyone without a job a herbalist. Ez shitton of food.
>>
>>125989998
regardless of any possible changes in this update, you still only need 1 farmer. In fact having more than 1 probably does more harm than good

>>
>>125990516
Huh I don't doubt you but I thought it was the other way. Skill effects planting speed, skill effects harvest amount.
>>
>Bring one soldier with me
>Gets wrecked in the caverns
>Oops
>No military now
>Elven caravan shows up
>Brings leopard
>Leopard becomes my new militia commander

>>
>>125990661
no I think the other anon is right. if you watch your farms closely the harvesters aren't grabbing plants out of thin air, they actually appear on the plot when they're ripe, and then a harvest job is created from that
>>
>>125990520
I've been in this general consistently since 34.11, and I've never seen anything to suggest that. Maxtm posts here, and he's made a few upscaled/nonsquare versions of CLA (he's even credited in the OP for CLA on the tileset subforum on bay12). That's probably why you think that. He also keeps having to tell people here that isn't CLA or Victorianon, because anons like you keep saying shit like that.
>>
>>125990661
The skill of the planter is all that matters. The harvester's skill does not effect output.

Its counter intuitive but there you go

I think that only happens if you have fewer ladders than herbalists. they don't try to put them back in a stockpile for no reason.

>>126001081
I've had no trouble assigning rooms or meeting areas on other z-levels to a location if that's what you mean.

Actually I've found it necessary because I simply don't have the real estate to dedicate to a sprawling, one level tavern.

Not that this is so much of a problem because a werebeast spiral killed half my fort, but given my wealth I'll just get more fisherdwarves and actual useful dwarves to fill it soon anyway.

Unless someone got bit, turns into a Were Bison, and finishes off what's left anyway.

yes, you can have multiple levels. the "location" is a collection of zones, and everything contained within those zones is considered part of the location.

Forges also produce a pair for 1 gauntlet order, same for boots.

If you're gonna lose from having all werecreatures, it would be the moment they are all infected, I would imagine, not on the full moon when they turn.

It all depends on how the game internally handles a werecreatures state.

- Are they simply dwarves with an "infected" tag on them that gets checked for once a month, and if present changes them into a werecreature for a little bit>

or

- Are they a Werecreature with a "dwarf" tag, that just changes its shape and behaviour once a month

Hey /dfg/, how dangerous are trolls? Is it anything special if a dwarf manages to kill like 8 of them alone while only getting lightly injured?

Because there's an adventurer interrupting a siege at the moment and she's a speardwarf who is just annihilating anything that comes near her, a couple of groups of trolls tried to swarm her and she just dodged and headstabbed them until they died.
>>
I give up. The fucking dwarves refuse to even consider wearing iron gauntlets/boots in the list. Even if it lies there right on the stockpile in front of them, it doesn't even show in the spesific piece menu, no matter what i do.
>>
>>126013662
not very dangerous for someone with decent skills. they're strong as fug but usually have no skills and often no weapons. they're only an issue at all in sieges because they can swim (I think) and are building destroyers

sometimes, although she's definitely been killing them after exiting the trance too, she just dodges or parries blows and goes for head attacks constantly, every troll she's killed died due to a tendon/nerve in the brain being torn.

>>126013789
Ok, good to know. Usually I just overwhelm enemies with squads so seeing a single dwarf fuck up 8 trolls in a row got me wondering how dangerous they actually were.
>>
>>126013662

Can a door only have a single lever/pressureplate attached to it? My dwarves keep canceling a connecting job because they "cannot find path", even though both sides of the door are accessible.
>>
>>126012417
Definitely a result of them remembering being attacked by/attacking others.

If I go bite people as a weremammoth and fast travel so they turn, when I come back they're still pissed at me, but if they bite someone else and I travel again, the other people are only pissed at the one that bit them, not me necessarily.

If I walk in while two of these other-bite-caused weremammoths are killing some humans they will all be listed as my ally.
>>
>>126015214
yeah, seems to be the case. I guess it's something to do with accessing the door (once it's flagged as 'operated by mechanisms' it's as good as forbidden, maybe)
I end up using bridges instead whenever I can, although that's annoying because of the slight delay they have
>>
>>126015687
the issue is that the door needs to be openable to put a mechanism on, because the mechanic has to be on the same tile as the door. Doors that are linked to levers cannot be opened except by pulling the lever.

Try opening the door then link the second lever.

Finally, in mid-spring, the migrants come. Not that the elves will likely be leaving for a while, since I'm walling the front entrance off to keep out Little Miss Meteorkingdom, so I hope they like their salty alcohol. Also, while the newbies are going to work on their own easily enough, nobody's taken up leadership, so I have no ability to assign noble positions. The outpost liaison never left the fort after meeting with my then-leader, so he isn't exactly able to tell anyone that we need new leadership, either.

>>126025772
If you're the guy with the wereshrew it shouldn't be too hard. They might be the smallest werebeasts out there. Basically you just have to get all your dwarves bitten. Anyone who survives the bite will turn the next month. Isolating your infected with unarmed dwarves will make it easier. Just watch combat logs to see who you can let out of your isolation chambers. The more dwarves become infected, the fewer survivors there will be each month, so isolation is almost necessary to get the last 20% or so to turn. Then you only have to worry about visitors being slaughtered and the occassional minor loyalty cascades that it can cause.

Didn't smash them quickly enough, had 4 dwarves that weren't infected and a migrant wave came right before they transformed. Have 12 dwarves left, 4 of them infected. Just gonna wait until the next transformation and say my farewells to Bloodysyrup.

Criminal organizations are "groups" not civs, but they do take over sites. They show up in legends as a war between a civ and a group within that civ. When they succeed the site is still owned by the same civ, though. Incidentally, I've only seen this happen in human civs in legends. Not sure why.
Unfortunately you can only claim sites for yourself currently.

Double slit is for getting past an aquifer by the use of a pump and walls.
You have to build stuff on tiles with water level of 1-2.
Your dorfs will cancel construction immediately when the water level is at 2, but if you keeeep ooon telling them to build the damn thing, EVENTUALLY they will build it.

I did this, too, in my fort recently.

Interesting. I've never seen two civs of the same race at war with each other. Apparently human civs have some values procedurally generated now, so maybe it's a new thing.
I'm going to speculate that the members of the mechanical nation are treating the occupying force from the confederation of poems as an outlaw group, either because the game doesn't know how to talk about occupying forces yet, or because they actually are an outlaw group who was practicing cross-civ banditry. It's just a guess, though. That whole scenario even being possible is news to me.

> that can only have fun by setting absurd goals

If that's how they want to play, then that's whatever. Personally I get a lot of enjoyment by reading legends and using my adventurers and fortresses to act on the world around me.

My first attempt at a moat was almost a disaster. Despite painstaking efforts to prevent an accident, I still ended up channeling one tile too close to the river.

I mined out an entrance into my fort from the bottom of the channel so my miners could get out after digging the moat. It was still open when the flooding occurred. The fortress was at risk for being flooded and destroyed and Innumerable lives were hanging in the balance.

But Zaneg "Cityelder" Inoethekir, a skilled mason and armorer, was in the moat for some reason when the disaster occurred. He was the only one close enough who could wall up the gap and save the fortress in time. But there was one problem - he only had enough time to fill the gap from where he was standing and had no choice but to trap himself in the moat with imminent death.

And yet he survived. He walled up the gap, got flooded with water, climbed up five z-levels frantically, and got to safety.

I do not know how he did this, but our fortress has been saved and our hero has emerged unscathed.

Deadly dust syndromes are randomly generated, and far from all of them are harmful. Some simply knock the dorfs out while other simply makes them tired or dizzy. Some makes them rot, but this can be cured by a skilled surgeon.

The most dangerous dusts are those that diable vital functions(if they destroy the lungs or the brain, for example).
>>

well due to timing, none of my army got dusted, so I can't know for sure if any dwarves actually are suffering from the symptoms yet. I guess if nothing has happened yet I'll just assume everything is fine.

>>126083983

Yes I do. The plot that doesn't have other crops available is full with plump helmets.
>>
>>126085131
What's happening is you probably have "above ground" squares created by chopping down trees on the surface layer (there's a bug that creates channeled holes if you chop trees on the surface that have a cavern directly below them) that are blocking the farmers from planting anything else. farmers ignore plots after an above-ground plot, even if they are below ground.

There's no way to fix the plots that are ruined by this, but if you have more layers of soil you can go down 1 Z level and set up a new plot there.
>>
>>126085509

Thank you very much that explains everything.
>>
>>12608550
>>126085846
This happened to me in my current fort as well. Turns out a tree I had cut down was directly above the farm and caused the ground to collapse or something which turned it into am aboveground plot. I was so confused I thought my farmers were retarded or something. I ran out of food and seeds and everything. It was a catastrophe.

So yeah thanks to the first anon cause I had no idea that chopping trees can cause channels
