Lots of peopple are tired of the GTA/Vivec/Imperial City/Witcher 3 city(forgot its name) where 99% of the city is just cardboard cutouts that drain resources for something you are never going to interact with.
Its part of the sreason they itnroduced radiant quests, people complained they had no reason to go to 99% of the dungeons in the game, because no ques went there, and it was just going to have the same loot as everything else, so why bother.

with that, you've got a character thrust into the wasteland who's trying to get his home back
and he meets people in the wasteland who are trying to get THEIR homes back
like, suddenly, now, meeting Preston and the survivors and helping them rebuild Sanctuary makes sense. If i'm rebuilding my old neighborhood that I had grown attached to, I have a reason to care.
and Preston's radiant quests have you meeting other struggling settlers, one of them mentions the Great Green Jewel, and you remember going to baseball games in Boston proper and so you go visit and see what's become of the place
and boom you're in the middle of a town driven to paranoia by the fear of the institute
so you start helping them because you understand the fear of not trusting your neighbors because you grew up in the Red Scare
but then the BoS shows up and they want to start a war, and you know how wars go, they ruin homes, so you see what they're all about, and you can join them and make sure they keep the people of the commonwealth safe, or you can oppose them to stop their war
and then you hear about the Railroad, who's helping the synths, and you learn that the synths are searching for a home too, and you can either agree that they are human and deserve it or not
just by opening up the character's backstory and focusing less on "suburban husband/wife with child" and more on "here's what growing up in the propaganda filled, Red Scare, pre-war world was like" can make the entire commonwealth and all of the factions and their plans have more emotional impact on the player

Oberland is one of my favorite spots to build at.
Everyones always showing off their uber super oversized sanctuary builds and I never see anyone showing off oberland or Tenpines or anything smaller.
I also like the surroundings of oberland. a few decent spots to loot fight and gear up at.
And just a short run away from hangmans alley and that whole area.
I havent set up my base on my newest charactor *based strongly on the guy in doom 1 & 2 past the default built shack in sanctuary. But the 2nd place i'll setup is most likely going to be oberland since it's a nice spot.

My favorite spot is Country Crossing. It has enough space that I'm actually able to build something resembling a small Fallout 2-like town (AKA actually fucking civilized) with Alternative Settlements

Government surveillance in the house (what do you think Codsworth is?), men in black constantly banging on your door, pointing guns at you and screaming "ARE YOU A COMMUNIST? ARE YOU BEGINNING TO HATE FREEDOM?!", the ability to slap your wife around and tell her to get back in the kitchen or ask why is she wearing pants?
Plus, if you snoop around Sanctuary, you can find some stuff to indicate the place wasn't entirely free of the darker aspects of the world. One of your neighbors was dealing drugs to half the people in your city including police officers, and another neighbor was trying to keep a step ahead of the game and was building their own bombshelter complete with gun safe. (no skeleton inside, did they quit because of Vault-tec's offer or did they somehow make it?)

There is no plasma shotgun in the game. There is no laser shotgun in the game. That you can modify the laser rifle and plasma rifle to fire in a way that's "kind of" similar to a shotgun does not change that fact. Fallout 4 has like 12 weapons in it.

So what's a non-cliche way? I ask that out of genuine curiosity but then I'm not even sure that's why people put scars on their characters. Like, maybe they just want them to have one, with no ulterior motive like "it makes them unique". It's enough for the person playing that character to like the way it looks... on the character. Yeah?
I mean, really. Up until this game there was no way to give a character facial scars in Fallout 3, and even NV didn't have a couple of scars for the two bullets you take to the dome.
Now that people can add scars and blemishes to their character because it's a function of the game, they do. I still fail to see the problem, really.
But I reiterate, please, tell me some solid ways to make a character stand out visually. Make them skinny? Make them fat? Make them muscular? I've seen people here complain about all of those body types, too.
Give them an unusual hairstyle? Give them a COMMON hairstyle? Yup, you've got it. More complaining.
