So it's not the developer's fault for being unable to make a game with physics that properly adjusts weapon placement to account for the character body options that the game provides? Okay.

Literally when did I ever say this? Stop inventing arguments in your head and putting words into other people's mouths.

I want the devs to fix clipping and weapon shouldering physics issues.

If anyone wants to remove options, it's that anon who keeps talking about the devs "intending" you to play this and not that and all that shit coming from his/her mouth.

Better than my problem.

I'm going to be disappointed if the plot of DaS3 turns out to be "eldritch lovecraftian oldgods from beyond the stars" like in DeS and Bloodborne. All of Miyazaki's games end up like that it seems. The rumors of extra-dimensional shit in DaS3 makes it seem like that will be the explanation for the the series. Again.

Speaking of Ash Lake, how did a chunk of surface land from the Age of Ancients end up as the deepest area underground in Lordran?

What do you mean?
>>
>>125574971
>we want the monster hunter audience
>oh wait, nevermind, lets just make all the bosses into bulky, armed humanoids like my OC monhun character
His influence was pretty terrible. Like he clearly didn't understand what made souls games good or why they were so acclaimed and more popular both overseas and domestically than his own pet franchise and just tried to force everything through his dragon quest-style japanese high fantasy RPG lens.
>>
>>125575746
The world of DaS1 in the Age of Fire is built upon the canopy of Arch Trees sprouting from Ash Lake. The Lords built the world and their kingdoms over top of the previous world.

Supposedly, DaS2 takes place so far in the future that this canopy has collapsed and the world the Lords built fell back onto the Ash Lake World.
>>
>>125575746
ash lake is the base. lordran’s soil rests upon the branches of a tree. you can see a bare branch from the graveyard looking toward the catacombs and you can see the roots of the tree in the firelink chamber. inside is the kiln of the first flame, where fire came to be, the place you go down to from the tree in the intro cinematic.
>>
>>125575746
Na, I think the Age of Ancients happened entirely underground. The archtrees hold up the world.

I think the reason the Lords waged war against the dragons is because humans originate even deeper underground (I think the Kiln of the First Flame is the lowest (geographical) point in the entire game) and wanted to make their way to the surface. The grey world of the dragons was in the way though.

Presumably Ash Lake is all flooded now because as time passed more water trickled down from the surface world and flooded the world of the dragons.
>>
>>125575884
I'm really sick of this "dudes in armor, gaem is so bad!" meme. Yet another example of hypocritical criticism pertaining to DaS2 in areas that were exactly the same in DaS1.

Tanimura's influence was fucking excellent and he single-handedly salvaged DaS2 from a 2/10 rushed piece of shit into a 7/10 worthy entry of the Souls series. This is fact.
>>
>>125575884

>>
>>125576134
>>125576145
>>125576148

Makes sense. That would explain a lot of things if DaS2 is in the same location as Lordran, devs that scrapped the original idea for DaS2 half-way saying otherwise be damned.
>>
>>125575884
>we want the monster hunter audience
The Shibuya that worked on Dark Souls 2 is not the same Shibuya from Monster Hunter. In Japanese characters, their names are spelled differently.

Just like how there are tons of people named Robert Johnson that aren't all the same people.

I haven't heard this theory before. 5 favorite Souls series bosses? I'm including Bloodborne because it clearly is a Souls game.

1. Orphan of Kos
2. Manus, Father of the Abyss
3. Great Grey Wolf Sif
4. Father Gascoigne
5. Fume Knight

Yes, I've played Demon's Souls too, but none of the bosses are top five worthy for my tastes.
>>
>>125576635
Actually, that was just a mistranslation on the part of the interviewer (which was a gaming magazine, big surprise). Tanimura basically said something to the effect of "Dark Souls 2 is a whole new world, don't expect your knowledge of the first game to help you here," which was explicitly to assuage some accusation the interviewer threw out that being a direct sequel would imply recycling world design from the first game. The interviewer then took that and turned it into "Dark Souls 2 is set in an entirely new universe and is not connected at all to the first game."

And, of course, people bought it hook, line and sinker only to be unpleasantly surprised when the game released and was chocked full of connections to the previous game.

It wasn't in the original iteration of the game (remember the very first, and only, Shibuya interview with the North Pole / South Pole comment, meant to show that Lordran was the Northern Land of Giants in Drangleic's time) but when the game was reimagined, they added elements that would make it as Lordran as possible (stuff like the boss of the Blue Cathedral, the 4 great beings droppping Lord Souls in NG+, the Lordvessel shards, the whole Manus fragments plotline, were stuff added at the last moment).
>>
>>125577235
>his involvement with monster hunter was used as a promotional line.

Yes...because the journalists who said this immediately thought that they were the same person and didn't bother to check the Japanese characters to see that they were different people.

Someone on /dsg/ pointed this to me back before Dark Souls 2 even came out. I'm on my mobile so I can't be assed to copy and paste Moon language characters (or to even find the sites that contain their names in JP), but they were different.

This is the proper way to do things, to be honest.
It ensures that all of the on-release issues like pre-release megamules, region restrictions not working, multiplayer matchmaking not working, game breaking bugs/exploits/imbalances, network stress issues and the like can be testes and found in a contained environment and then fixed on the international release patch.

DaS2's approach with a global simultaneous release caused problems both with the servers being able to handle the volume of traffic and the the sheer number of issues that only emerged on release when millions of players had their hands on the game but desperately needed fixing, such as NPC questlines breaking, phantom criticals and major imbalances like CMW MLGS.

Damn. I'm glad other people in the Souls community are more observant than I am.

I'd much prefer Things Betwixt being a point where you can see the surface world and subterrenean world collapsing into each other, as opposed to a loreless extradimensional limbo you reach by diving into a fucking hole in the ocean.

There were no weapons that could feasible make use of it in the network test. The only 'long handle' type of weapon in the test was the spear, and spears didn't have a sweetspot in DaS2 because fromsoft loved the idea of an extremely fast, long-reach weapon with strong tracking also not having a sweetspot up close when it was already faster than most close-ranged weapons. The spear did not have a sweetspot in DaS3.

Also, sweetspots weren't in Bloodborne and since they're using that engine for DaS3 and Miyazaki apparently dislikes the mechanic, it probably won't be in.

This isn't something that you can see by simply using the "plain English" text. You need to actually read the Japanese characters.

Aava is similar to the other 4-legged beast bosses. Don't lockon, roll past their swipes to their bellies and hack their hind legs.

The difference is that Aava has 3 moves against this tactic
>Raises tail, 360 swipe

So watch out for these attacks, leave some stamina for rolling out after chopping him a few times.

>>
>>125579546
It's never actually impossible, it just becomes progressively more lenient the longer your roll. For the most part, stickstabs are only possible when the person makes a bad or stupid roll. How fast you have to be to punish, and what situations you can punish are larger the less distance their roll covers but even a 69% roll can consistently avoid stickystabs so long as you don't make a stupid roll, and even sub10% rolls can be punished for making a stupid one. Most people prefer sub50% because it gives you more leeway and makes you safer against russians, BRs and aussies but it's not absolutely necessary.

It isn't like DaS1, where fatroll can't escape BS chains and midroll can't avoid rollstabs with half of the weapons in the game. Stickystabs mostly just punish players that roll preemptively when there opponent isn't do anything or rely excessively on rolling to move around and reposition. If your character isn't close by and in neutral (eg. not performing any action or locked in any animation) when somebody rolls, you can't stickystab them.

I can't speak for the activity on the PS4. I only have the PC version. On the PC version, at least, the DLCs are all invasion and co-op hotspots, though I imagine that the recent BB dlc would have siphoned most of the PS4 souls fans off to that game. If it's any consolation, the DLCs each have a plethora of uniquely obnoxious npc invaders. From took a note from how their players behaved.

Still, if you enjoyed the base game, then scholar will definitely be worthwhile for the dlc alone.

>>
>>125580531
>>125580767

I've noticed that with the music too. Dark Souls 1 had some energizing or creepy boss music for most of the bosses while in 2 it was like the composer was trying to put you to sleep or subtly tell you that he wasn't really into DaS2.

From DaS I remember the Gargoyles theme, Sif, Biggy & Smalls, Gwyn, Seath, and Pinwheel.

In DaS2 there's Nashandra and Sir Alonne.
>>
>>125581351
Sakuraba hasn't been into any game since he went back to working on like 7 OSTs a year. Fortunately the DLC composer Kitamura, who incidentally is the DS3 composer as well, gives significantly more fucks.
>>
>>125581351
That's probably just your preference, guy.

Music fades to the background when you are focusing on not-dying, whereas you hardly notice it at all when you walk in and blow up a boss in seconds. What songs you'll find 'memorable' will vary based mostly on which bosses you struggled with.

For example, I was stuck on the smelter demon for a good hour on my first playthrough, and as a result this is one of my favourite songs in the franchise, right alongside O&S https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mz1_3az6Hgs
The fact that the music is timed perfectly to hit its climax as he enters his 3rd phase is just perfect.
>>
>>125581930

>>
>>125581351
>or subtly tell you that he wasn't really into DaS2.
Sure you're not projecting your dislike of the game's soundtrack to the composer?

In my ears, all the SoulsBorne games OSTs have about a handful of extremely memorable tracks with all the rest being either okay or just forgettable.

Many, many months ago, I posted a review of the Bloodborne OST on /bbg/. Here's the short gist of it: The songs that I think are top tier are Omen, The Hunter, Darkbeast, Micolash, Ebrietas, Lullaby for Mergo, The First Hunter and Moon Presence. That was in my "top tier." Some are okay tier and the rest are completely shit tier.

The descriptions I used for three songs I considered shit tier (Hail the Nightmare, Soothing Hymn and Celestial Emissary) were all the same: "BORING attempt at an atmospheric shit that is just completely forgettable." That's because I couldn't find anything to say about them. I listened to them 4-5 times to review the album after playing the game through once and was completely dumbfounded by how boring these tracks were.

My views on all the Souls OSTs are similar. A handful of good songs, some mediocre tracks and tons of shit tracks. In the Dark Souls OST, so many of the tracks are so same-sounding and just blend together with those oppressive Gregorian chants, with some exceptions like Gwyn or Moonlight Butterfly.
>>
>>125581930
>The fact that the music is timed perfectly to hit its climax as he enters his 3rd phase

I liked the Ruin Sentinel track too but it didn't actually do this. The only game in the series that did this kind of thing with the music was Bloodborne. Unless you want to count the first 5 seconds of Nashandra's boss fight where it played a song that was otherwise cut from the game.
>>
>>125582308
>music hits climax of track according to phases

More games need to do this. Not just Bloodborne or other non-Souls games like Metal Gear Rising or Monster Hunter.

Why don't more games do this?
>>
DS1 had some really intense music, which worked nicely because the bosses were great, and hard to beat. The problem with intense themes is, if paired with bad bosses, you'll remember that boss mostly by the music, and not by the experience as a whole.

As some anon pointed out a few days ago, music is supposed to enhance the experience, not become it. I love the intense themes in DS1, but they surely wouldn't work very well in DS2.

>>125582308
Smelter's 3rd phase is on a timer. If you don't do enough damage to trigger it, it happens automatically around a minute into the fight unless it's delayed because he's trapped in a long animation. If you go into the fight at around the damage output the area is designed for, it takes you about a minute to trigger his 3rd phase anyways. There's a couple themes that were like that, synced up to an approximated pace the fight would take so that they would climax during a phase change.

It's obviously not quite as good as BB's system, because the music only matches one pace to the fight and going in with a strong weapon or a weak one will cause you to lose that sync. I didn't really like how jarring the transition could be sometimes in BB -like sometimes it just cuts the song off abruptly to start the 'climax' song.

What Thrusting sword should I go with?

Estoc has nice reach, and is this hybrid Rapier and normal sword. The strong attack is a slash, which gives them more options.

The rest have really short range. Ricard's Rapier has great stats, but short range, and low durability. Should I go with that?

And Balder Side Sword is CLEARLY a god damn rapier. Why isn't it?

My current setup:

>Richard's Rapier
>Bandit Knife
>black bow of pharis
>wooden shield

I personally feel like the music direction has improved over the years, but maybe DaS1-tier angry, ominous "OOOH OHHO OH OH" chanting is not really my thing. Felt sorta same-y, save for a handful of really melodic tracks like Moonlight Butterfly's theme or Gwyn's theme.
Some of the DaS2 music tracks were really fucking bland, but those that are good are better than the DaS1 ones in my opinion. Pursuer (it will always remind me of Jaws), Raime, Velstadt, BIK and Alonne all have very cool themes. So overall I'd say that DaS1 is a bit more consistent in quality, but DaS2 has more good tracks.
And by the looks of it DaS3 soundtack's gonna be GOAT, just check out the main menu theme. It's a lot more intense compared to the other main menu themes, which is very fitting for the last game in the series. Reminds me of NIER soundtrack a bit, even.

Use the BSS if you need to do a lot of damage. The 2HR2 does about as much damage as the halberd 2HR1. Use the Estoc for everything else.
>>
>>125583076
Estoc for something more versatile. You'd want to upgrade to Ricard's when you have high dex since it has B scaling.

Thrusting swords can attack with the shield up. That would make BSS quite OP considering that its stab is nearly the range of a spear.
>>
>>125583280
Some of the music in these games only really work in context of the fights they're in, as well. Like, I wouldn't listen to Raime's theme on my phone or something but in the fight itself, the heavy, regimented, march-like drone of the music and chanting complements the oppressive atmosphere of the fight perfectly. It's a high-tension fight and the music adds to that tension without distracting from it.

I'd say that Taurus Demon is memorable in the same way. The loud, aggressive chanting suits what is really the first proper boss fight of the game and adds to the intended feeling of intimidation from a boss who's brutally, mechanically punishing to new players in melee.

The problem with Taurus Demon's theme is that the leitmotif is extended throughout several of the bosses in the game, but it only really works once because after you beat Taurus, the prospect of facing off against a large badass demon stops being intimidating. In fact, in general the bosses of DaS1 stop being these scary, seemingly insurmountable challenges once you become more comfortable with the controls and combat of the game and it stops being this big mysterious entity out to kill you. Some bosses, like Capra, are still mechanically challenging, even for experienced players, but they don't carry that same sort of intimidation factor that their music seems to be drawing on.

One of the big flaws in DaS1's soundtrack was overusing those motifs along some bosses when the style didn't really work for the atmosphere of that particular boss. DaS2 did a better job of keeping its soundtrack varied, but wasn't always successful in matching the atmosphere of the bossfight or doing so in an interesting way. I still think that a lot of its BGMs don't get proper credit because the bosses that they were tied to were shitty, even though the music itself was good. Though, at the same time, it seemed to let you down when it actually mattered as all 4 of the Great Soul bosses had mediocre themes.

800k would probably be most populated at Iron Keep or Tseldora. Unfortunately neither of those places are popular for summoning. You can try Earthen Peak by the 1st or 2nd bonfire to catch latecomers, Shaded Ruins bonfire to catch people finishing up their greatsouls (and, if you're lucky, pick them up again at the 1st Tseldora bonfire and then again at the 2nd), Iron Keep's first bonfire and hope you get something that isn't a ganksquad and the Sinner's Rise bonfire to catch people who saved it for last or just overleveled.

You might even find activity at the stairs to Drangleic Castle or its 1st bonfire, but that's unlikely.

Unfortunately, most of the lord souls areas after the first part of the game don't lend themselves well for summoning (eg. the fucking entirety of The Gutter) and the fact that you can do them in any order tends to make consistent summoning brackets impossible. On the bright side, once you reach the 1-2 mil range, you'll be able to co-op everything from Iron Keep to Dragon Shrine to Nashandra to the DLCs.

I really don't think it will matter. DaS2 was bad and I still got over a thousand hours out of it. Weapon arts already look like a more interesting combat mechanic than powerstance was and we've only seen a handful of movesets. As long as they don't make it an excuse to cop out on standard movesets and still have unique and fun things like Santier's Spear, IKUGS, FUGS, and the BK weapons of DaS1, I'll be happy. My biggest worry is that they'll use weapon arts as an excuse to recycle every normal attack between every weapon of a class and 'unique' or 'special' weapons will only have a slightly different L2 from one another, and not have anything with actually unique or hybrid movesets like Syan's Spear and the Loyce GS or cool special effects like the IKUGS. Projectile-firing special attacks are neat the first few times, but when every special property is just a projectile attack, it gets kind of lame.
>>

>>

That only really applies to pvp. You don't need a well-rounded build to pve, especially for co-op. Base vigor and adp with 99 str is viable in low-mid SM co-op, as is pretty much every other ridiculous thing you can come up with.

The 150 meta is silly but it's convenient that people stop there as it fixes their SM in the drangleic castle range for the remainder of the game and makes co-op matchmaking easy.

There aren't a lot of gaps in his attacks that let you fire off a shot, just need to be super patient and don't get greedy
Headshots do stagger like the other guy said

It's actually C/D/

>Thrusting swords can attack with the shield up. That would make BSS quite OP considering that its stab is nearly the range of a spear.

Yeah that. That's why they made it a straight sword. They considered maybe giving it poorer stats, but then the Estoc already fills that role. A BSS rapier would be a weapon without flaws.

will someone on 360 trade my bone fist across characters?

You're probably missing. Even with throwing daggers you can stun him.

Dark Souls 3 will probably have some fags like Solaire, Lucatiel, Fake Blue Magic Sword Guy, etc. who show up in multiple places and help you out.

All of the aforementioned people tend to eat shit after their first boss battle, do you think DaS3's people will be any different?

I think DaS2 wins this one.
Until they patch it.

How do you even do that?
>>

Except no one bashed its occurence in DaS2, fag.
>>
>>125587901
I'm guess it has to do with animation-cancelling the 1H->2H switch. I wish I had known about this 8 months ago, it looks amazing.

Don't hold your breath.

I really want some NPC that joins you as a friendly phantom but goes hostile during some boss battle. That'll teach people to think twice before summoning.

Thanks, I got him really close, just a sliver of hp left. I'll give it another go, should be able to get him.

I actually really hope that doesn't get patched as it's fantastic and should be possible in DaS3.

Every fight where someone put on RTSR went one of two ways.

To be fair though, DS repeats boss themes a lot, so you are more likely to remember themes like asylum demon's (which is repeated in taurus and stray's fights) and moonlight butterfly (which is repeated in gwyndolyn's fight and is thematically similar to sif's fight theme), but yeah they are generally better than those in ds2. The only fight theme I can remember off the top of my head is the one that is played in ruin sentinels/smelter demon's fight, and it isnt even that good imo

Despite all the bitching about fanservice and whatnot, if Maldron makes a return in DaS3 I will cheer.

I really hate the str weapon movesets in DS2. Instead of letting gravity assist your smash you work against it with that retarded upward swing. I mean you're already holding the club on your shoulder and then lowering it before the swing.

1. Artorias
2. O+S

sure he's a fuckup, but he's always jovial and cheery in a world gone to shit. His daughter, who knows he's a fuckup is trying to find him and keep him from fucking up, but eventually has to kill him. You don't find that the least bit sad, you internet sociopath?
