So this is my first time making an advanced cannon, and I'm trying to make a super-powerful railgun for the fear factor, but apparently the way I set it up is shit because it loads cancerously slow. My ammo input feeders tell me they've been waiting at least a minute for a single shell to load into the turret.

Here's my turret, ammo boxes to follow.

The problem is hills. If I used thrusters to give a boost, sure, but on wheels alone the terrain is barely navigable without smacking the cockpit into a ditch or rolling over into a ditch. Earthlikes are too hilly.

I found one area I was able to actually go fast in, and then I hit a tree, lost power, and rolled sideways into a mountainside.
>>
Can wheel variables be set through a programming block? Could make presets that way.

>>125521980
Output feeders arent in anymore in the devtest.

You should try building there, i dont see in your images an ammo router on the turret(and you need one more anywhere on the ship)

Also, can you place the output feeders in the ship instead of the turret?

With nuengines you can easily get small engine setups which is pretty dank. This is a cute little 3x4x2 engine setup.
Limited to 50% output it generates 150 power at 16% heat indefinitely for 1 fuel/s. So it's running at 1fuel:143 power which is pretty efficient and only has a heat signature of 67 which is very small. That space also includes 4000 fuel which means you're good for over an hour without having to refuel.

Was using the shield to test load on it.

>>125523789
This thing might as well run indefinitely, I played with it for a few minutes and it used maybe 5 fuel.
>>
Railgunfag here, I found out what was wrong with my turret, turns out I made the shells 2m instead of 1 and that fucked it up. They're loading fairly well now, but my railgun is a piece of shit. It fires the shells in an automatic spray but their range is even shittier than regular turrets.
>>
>>125525090
Railguns are pretty junk, are you trying to go gunpowderless?

Also the more "rail" things you add along the barrel changes what % of the battery you consume, each one adds 5% iirc. So you can use that to tailor your battery consumption hopefully.
>>
>>125524539
Upgraded it a little. Doubled fuel capacity, lost a little fuel efficiency, made the engine engine/fuel/radiator package 3x3x3. so for 8% increase in size overall it's much more usable since it can just be sunk into the floor like so.

And because of improved hull it's the same speed at half the propeller speed so it's much better on fuel anyway.
>>
>>125525564
I'm using 1m shells with a supercavitation base and an AP capped head. Is that bad for railguns? Also, I fixed the range, but now the damage and penetration is extremely shitty, even if it can travel long distances. It's only able to chip a single block at a time off of an enemy.

Honestly if you're going for railguns you have enough problems getting any speed or range, just go for HE senpai, it's probably gonna be the best bang for buck without needing a 1000000 power engine to fuel your railgun. Literally just a couple HE bodies or whatever, probably get good damage and decent speed. Or HEAT or something if you like that.

Credit is due to the Imperial Russian navy. The worst navy that ever existed.

Also because of the absurd turret layout, which is pretty much exactly what the Borodino class battleships were rocking it has problems with shooting itself in the superstructure, causing devastating turret explosions unless you set really severe restrictions on the turret arcs.

>>

Extreme speed? You mean like, rapid firing heavy caliber guns?
Like extreme DPS?
Fuck that.
Unless it's projectile speed.

Objectively best sort of weapon in any game are slow-firing instant kill weapons with limitations such as limited firing arcs, limited effective distance or drop-off with distance and the like.
Sniping running people, planes with rocket launchers is the best thing ever.
>>
>>125536982
The biggest you can have is 50cm, which is larger than the cannons aboard the ship in your picture (40.9cm).

Custom cannons are closer to 80cm but much slower muzzle velocity.

If you want frustrating, try out the new fuel engines. They produce less than 1/10th of the power and they actually shut off if they overheat.

Nuengines are great, they make it so more little stuff will be around since large stuff will actually be expensive to field now.

Here is a great little plane, uses 2 fuel/s when making ammo, runs at 11% heat too. That's using 2 large radiators, 2 turbocharger and an exhaust. So this thing basically has an hour of flight time at 55m/s while dropping missiles the whole time. (up to 1000 of them before needing to refill metal reserves)

Localized resources is hardly that punishing so far.

Projectile speed is what I mean. I couldn't care less about the rapid fire or reload rate, as long as the shots pack a powerful punch. Better to hit it once with a knock-out blow instead of wasting energy and resources on a swarm of pencil-thin pricklers.
>>
>>125540528
Yeah, I didn't really have anything and haven't had anything ever so I just enjoy making new shit weekly.

Also with new update batteries/electric engines have a real use. With low RPM engines being viable now (just stack as many carburetors as you can on each cylinder) you can make 10%capped engines that run 24/7 to charge batteries. electric-diesel is alive boys.

>>125542982
I lied i got caught up with an idea.

So this is a one cylinder engine.

It has many batteries attached (43000 power worth).

This engine is designed for low RPM, it has two things I tested, 10% and 50% load.

10% load is ridiculous.
50 power output which you may think is whatever, but it consumes 0.1 fuel/s with that, with an efficiency of 650 power/fuel, so with the 13000 fuel pictured it will generate over the length of the fuel 8,450,000 power which will take a whopping 36 hours and refill the entire battery every 14 min. Also it runs at 1% heat.

At 50% it's a bit more nasty. 250 power, 1 fuel/s consumption, 8% heat. It will run for a measly 3h 36m at this speed. However it will charge the entire battery in just 168 seconds. The total power generated more than halves though, only 3,250,000 generated over the length of the fuel.

10% I think would be best on a tower or something, a building. It's very efficient, use it in your base perhaps, set up 10 and have them be hyper efficient with a large battery bank.

50% would be suitable for a decent size boat if you toggle shield off when you aren't in battle, and obvs you can make the batteries bigger. I just wanted to see how small I could make a very big storage thing, considering the entire thing is only 3(5 with poking out chargers)x10x4(5 with the one charger there).

Thoughts?
>>
>>125544512
Theoretically, no. But unless your gun is fuckhueg then yes.

Railgun is a flat addition to the velocity of your projectile based on the stored charge. So if your projectile has a velocity of 0 and the railgun adds 300m/s then you've got a shell that starts at 300m/s.

I'd like to get into modding spengies (new thrusters and ressources mainly) but right now I find it kind of inaccessible. So where should I start (with zero programmation skills) ? and how would you describe the modding in spengies in comparison to other games/toolkits, is it easy or laborious ?
>>
>>125582216
hello reddit
>>
>>125581371
They aren't "advanced" engjnes. They're a straight replacement for the old ones that are less imbalanced in favor of huge engines that generate near unlimited power.

It's easier to make small engines that produce practical levels of power, which helps small craft, particularly aircraft. But ships covered in lasers and shields drawing power directly from engines are not practical.
>>
>>125581371
Don't listen to
>>125581497
new engines are great, they really aren't very complicated. You can get good engines for whatever really easily. In like, 30 minutes of fiddling around last night I figured it out. There's still very powerful engines that can be made. I made one last night that wasn't even very big and still outputted ~2000 power consistently. *Maybe* slightly larger than an old engine, but it also ran at 1/100 of the temperature so you could in theory actually use heat decoys. You have a lot more choice though, low rpm engines are extremely efficient, high rpm ones are about 1/2 as efficient but output significantly more power and require a lot more cooling.

it doesn't take long to figure out, just play with them if you really need help I'll add you on steam or something.

>>

reduce variables to make balancing easier.

Plus it was annoying when someone would twink down using high tier armor. you'd get a skeleton frame robot that couldn't be hurt by anything either than an equivalent tier weapon.
>>
>>125582383
There is no modding toolkit.

The game is ostensibly open source although they haven't updated the repo in a while.

>>125581371
They're cute as fuck and actually less complicated.

They're also dramatically less powerful, but oldengines won't be in the game anymore- every new ship MUST use new engines. Old blueprints still work, though, but you can never change out their cylinders or they'll become the new ones.

Eventually we're getting nuclear engines, which will provide the power output level we're used to, but with downsides such as exploding easily.
>>
>>125586323
Just go play devtest now and do campaign with localized resources and new engine?
>>

Most of us are just designing new ships on devtest while we wait. You could play your campaign on devtest if you wanted, but it'll be subject to even faster change than you're already uncomfortable with.

One of them probably had old engine parts that are bonked now and had a crazy internal collision that in turn blew up an outdated shell parts box which destroyed the entire ship.

1. By removing tiers people will no longer complain about t1 armour megabots and the like.
2. Less robot variety, more balance. R-right?
3. Artbots who want pretty colours can now do that without compromising on armour.

You have to understand Freejam is trying to enable people who LOVE artbots to play the game.
Freejam is literally taking a fucking sledgehammer to the game for LOL ARTBOTS
This is fine. A lot of the changes they have planned could actually be very good if they do it right.
It's hit or miss whether Freejam actually decides to take it the right way.

If Freejam takes this the right way we'll start to see different armour types such as armour that fractures easily yet maybe provides temporary cover or explosive resistant armour or heavy armour.
If Freejam takes this the wrong way they'll dumb the game down until the game literally becomes nothing but lego racers for kids who play minecraft on creative mode.

Been trying to spend a bit of time each night thinking about nuclear engines! But I want to know how you think they should work!

Here is my basic idea ( with a limited understanding of how a nuclear engine actually works!)

A central piece (don't know it's name yet)
Water pipes come off it in all directions
The water pipes are coated in uranium blocks
There are control rods in that connect to the uranium blocks
The whole think has to be surrounded in shielding blocks

The reactor basically heats up depending on the number of uranium blocks- the hotter it is the more power it produces

The number of control rods and their connections to the uranium try to keep it cool

The connections the water pipes have to the uranium determine how much of that heat is turned into power

The aim is to get it damn hot but not so hot that it blows up

Heat is kind of equivalent to radio-activeness

If a hole appears in the shielding the radio-activeness will escape and damage everything outside- expanding a bit like a gas

The aim, gameplay wise, is to make a large very powerful engine that, once damaged, is extremely dangerous.

I logged in after the reboot with my drills and a grav collector going. Turned them off before the server went down again. Four refineries going, but that's about it.

Oh hey, that's me.

>drills
Please use one drill only. For a reason. Voxel changes cause tremendous update delay for every client. Refer to the Earthbreaker. Please read the rules post.

>grav collector
Floating items are limited to 16. As soon as a 17th item spawns anywhere in the game world, the 1st is deleted. You can disassembled that array and save us physics calculations.
>>
>>125595417

Typo. Only one drill, just a Large Earthbreaker.

The grav collector was more relevant in the old world, I guess. It would regularly collect about 1/5 as much ore as the Earthbreaker drill would, just because so much loose ore was flying off into space.

It looks like electric engines will be cool for making tiny drones now that there is resource transfer between ships.

I made a craft that can shit out a missile every few seconds, I suppose you could have a mothership that just constantly spawns and fuels disposable craft.
>>
>>125595417
Well that explains why when I was hand mining, half my ore would disappear.
>>
Okay, since nothing I did was changing the behaviour, I am turning the server off and will do local tests. Once I found the issue, I will report back and boot the server back up. If I find that someone has set some stupid script at an insane update rate or whatever, I'll have a stern chat with that person.

I don't care if you fuck up.
I do care if you keep mum about it. Talk to me.
>>
I was drilling with a single large ship drill on an asteroid around 15-20 minutes before the server started shitting the bed. No timers being used or anything.
>>
>accidentally spend all my crystal making everybody mad at the DWG
>suddenly a few coffin nails come into range of my 'fuck everything on the other side of the planet' missiles

this shit's great
>>
>>125597673
Alright. I found the issue. It's an ingame script.

Someone set up a script in the last 15 minutes before I took the server down that is doing some intensely insane calculations for the server This can be a high update cycle, or many blocks affected. Please come forward and tell me who did anything like this, so we know which script it is.

I will turn off all script clock timer blocks that trigger scripts. If you turn them on, let me know. If It happens again and I have to hunt down who did it, we'll have to think about measures to prevent this.

Scripts add a lot of functionality to space engineers. If people abuse this without regards to the toll it takes on a server, such as trigger/starting and endless loop of self-retriggering timers with massive scripts, then I might have to turn that feature off, and that would suck for everyone.

So, save me time and let others enjoy the game. Come forward and let's get this over with.
>>
I'm not anywhere near serb, but is it just SIM speed shitting or is everyone's frame rate shitting?

If it's frames shitting, there could be a block stuck into a rock or something like in >>125577676

So I've been told grav collectors are inefficient, and I'd like to know why. Assuming I've got a drillship set up like pic related - spherical grav gen directly between a collector and the drill - what exactly is the inefficiency?

I get a lot of ore flying off into space when I drill, and a significant amount of ore is in my collector whenever I drop it off. The collection funnel is big enough to catch all the flying chunks but small enough that I can still tunnel straight through asteroids without needing to widen the cavity created by the drill. The funnel itself is cheap to make - almost exclusively iron - and has negligible mass compared to the Earthbreaker Drill itself.

I won't use the grav collector anymore if it's causing unnecessary physics calculations, but I'd really like to understand what exactly is the problem with this setup from an efficiency standpoint.

Some dumbass will likely come forward in a few days' time going: "Oh I was away why are scripts disabled? Also I had automated a welder array to create and launch moon-sized dildos at nearby asteroids so I need scripts back thanks."

Gas those who stress the server.
>>
>>125601519
If you're using an earthbreaker it literally doesn't matter that you lose a few scraps out the sides
>>
>>125601519
You are barely picking shit up with it, most of the time the rocks cycle out before they even make it to the collector.
>>
>>125601519
>I won't use the grav collector anymore if it's causing unnecessary physics calculations

It is.
>>
>>125601519
You'll spend more on the collection array than you'll ever catch in tiny ore chunks flying off.
And by "go and do the math" I meant literally, sit down and crunch the numbers. I would be interested to see the results of that, not your crapshoot MSpaint skills.

It's easier for the server to delete the few chunks that fly off into space after you drill than for it to work out how to calculate those little pieces trajectories under gravity. Also, if you do a few spurts of drilling, the server will probably start auto-deleting some of the loose pieces you're picking up with the grav array, as it deletes loose pieces of shit floating around past a certain (small) number.

In short, a lot of effort and more server calculations for very little gain.

If they'd just message Ced, they wouldn't even have to come forward to everyone. Then we can all have scripts without the server crashing.

That or they could just gas themselves. I'm not choosy.

I should really clarify. The physics calculations bit was already explained - I should have said "since" instead of "if" - as was the reduced floating objects limit of 16. It was around 50 (I believe?) on the old world and a significant amount of ore would fly out from the drill whenever I mined (a big wave every few seconds), though that might have been due to the simulation speed preventing the drill from effectively collecting nearby chunks. I've already disabled the gravity portion and intend to grind it down when the server comes back up.

>>125601996

As far as the collection array is concerned, I'll make a rough overestimate of 9x9*2 armor blocks each costing 10 steel plates each, which comes to 1620 steel plates. Add in the cost of a gravity generator, a collector and three pieces of wire and that's still not much. Iron's almost worthless and the collector picks up more than enough materials to cover its cost in one run of the corresponding ore.

>>125602941

The cost in terms of physics calculations I've already commented on in this post, along with the reduced floating object limit. Part of what the gravity generator does is pull ore back into the drill, too. I agree that the cap of 16 does mean it sees little use, now.

--

So it seems like, physics aside, it's less a matter of inefficiency and more that the Earthbreaker picks up most of the ore from a deposit, with the total volume from a given deposit being so large that even if, say, 10% escapes, 90% is more than enough for whatever purposes. That sound about right?
>>
Can someone post that neat serb map? I found it useful.
>>
>>125604381
>That sound about right?

Yes. When you get millions of any ore in a matter of minutes it doesn't matter that you lose a few chunks out the side.
>>
>>125604712

Just feels wrong to waste anything in space.

Millions of kg of loose ore is a terrifying thing.

Shield generators, good funnel design and a good simulation speed kind of nix that concern.
