Say I have a terrain shader with some textures and I have a per vertex weight for for each.

But in a lot of instances this weight is 1 for 1-2 of these textures and 0 for others. Is the shader smart enough to avoid lookups if it has something like weight * textur2D(blablup, xy) when weight is 0 or do I need to prevent this somehow?

I have some performance issues on things with this shader (ie the terrain) when playing my game on my phone

To answer my own question: No its not smart enough. Is there some kind of bit trick to avoid calculation y in x * y if x is 0?
I am currently doing a simple if (x > 0.0) check but I was told I should avoid if statements in fragment shaders.

I can almost guarantee that doing the texture lookup inside the branch will be slower than just doing the texture lookup. What you need to do is somehow predicate WHICH texture you sample. So use a texture array, and have each vertex have N weights and N indices.

Played it for 5 minutes, review time.

+ not a clone, somewhat original idea
+ it runs well
+ nice music
+ feels nice, being hit feels really powerful
- bad audio effects for some stuff like that machine gun thing and the radio static type sound
- no tutorial, player has to guess what to do and even why to do it

Overall its pretty good considering its scope and the time limit, I like it. Good job, anon. You should be happy with yourself.

MAJOR demo-related progress today:

Visual options!

We now support a full array of visual options, which is a super-necessary step for releasing a demo since I know some of you guys are playing on toasters.

We support general settings (fullscreen, gamma, etc), allow you to adjust the camera follow distance for normal mode, gun mode, and 2D mode, have a number of scalability settings (draw distance, antialiasing quality, etc., all on a scale from Low to Cuhrayzee, as well as disabling motion blur and bloom, and and over/undersampling slider)

In addition, there are a number of interface settings. You can scale the HUD, disable the various elements, scale the aiming reticle separately, disable pop-up hints and, by popular demand, disable Comic FX (the word-bubble effects that player actions sometimes trigger).

Known issues right now:
- You cannot set the native resolution properly. This is trivial to support but I still need to make a two-field resolution entry box for the menu itself.
- Currently, visual settings and control schema are tied. This is normally not a big deal but if you try to use a control config save, it will carry the visual options with it. I can fix this but it will take some fiddling.
- The gamma setting has no suggestion-slider function for correct placement (i.e. "adjust the slider until the icon is JUST visible")
- Currently I don't have a delayed "Keep these settings?" box, seems like there must be some reason all games include it.

Up next: Pause Menu Move List for reference.

You can also use the backspace key, the B button, etc. to close.

Also you can click on a different window to open it and close the current one.

Just playing with a number of different, possibly intuitive, menu approaches.

If the demo reveals it confuses a lot of people I can always do key-prompts as well.

Hello there, I wanted to ask for some advice regarding a certain topic.

I wanted to create a small little game about girls and our relationship with clothes as I make documentary films revolving around this theme. I had this idea for a little free dress up style game where you are presented with an illustration of a little naked person who is very lightly animated. Surrounding this person are these cut outs of clothes that slowly glide and bounce around the screen, and when you click and drag them onto the person, audio plays from various women like in my films, talking about how certain clothes make them feel. Drag the maxi dress onto her and audio will play of a person talking about why they like to wear a maxi dress, blah blah blah. They will be lightly animated to do a pose, maybe smile. You get it.

I was wondering what kind of software I would use to create this little thing, thank you.
Game Maker im assuming.

Is "submission hour" an extra hour after the deadline where you can't continue to work on the game and can only submit it?

Is this enough to make you shits stop being afraid of 3d?

Submit your game first and worry about touchups later, there is a clause in the rules that you can fix bugs after submitting but you're supposed to keep a changelog of that.

It feels like an issue I had when moving from C++ to python.

It works if you create each object separately - are you sure that the "repeatedValue" creates a new object, which is identical to the copied one rather than just referencing it?

I filled another 2d array like that with bools (false) and it worked just fine, so I.. don't know

Its oddly specific though, like is it all this effort for a piece that will only appear once in your game?

this anon could be right, the docs make it sound like the repeated value is just pasted in rather than a new one being generated each time.

>>125385045
>I filled another 2d array like that with bools (false) and it worked just fine
That might be because bools are a primitive. Possibly whats going on is all your array elements DO point to a UI element, its just that they all point to the SAME UI element. And the what the line of code is doing is setting each element to a new, distinct one.

>>
>>125386956
This is what I don't get. You still own your music don't you? If a project falls off each person owns what they made so what's the problem?
>>
>>125387927
i'm just a musician, not a dude who specifically makes music for games. i spent a whole shitload of time making energetic videogamey music with context-sensitive variations and layers.
>>
>>125387927
>so what's the problem?
Maybe that they got themselves hyped up and poured their feels into making something they thought would be enjoyed by players and add to the game, but in the dev didn't appreciate their effort enough to even accept something that was basically a gift

just guessing, not a musicbro
>>
>>125388404
>context-sensitive variations
Do many musicians know how to do this? Its such a cool thing when it happens in a game, but it also seems pretty rare
>>
>>125388404
Was the music made according to a story? Was the art pixelshit? Can your music not fit any other game?
>>
>>125388425
Post your music and I will enjoy it. If it can't be enjoyed without a game it wasn't very good to begin with
>>
>>125387927
I'm not even a good musician, but I've made lots of songs for /agdg/ peeps, and believe me when I say that I try my hardest to make something that not only suits the game, but that complements it. If I make a song for your game, it's that game's song. Yeah, I can put it in my portfolio, but no one else can have it.

>>125388587
I love doing this, but sometimes devs will tell me no because of the extra work. and in one case the engine couldn't handle simultaneous streaming sources

I get that you want to make a good product and stuff but if you want to work with Indies then you need to expect 7 out of 10 projects to fail. If you can't salvage your work then 70% of it is useless
>>
>>125388587
>Do many musicians know how to do this

i feel like it's not a matter of whether the person doing the music knows how to, more along the lines of, does the dev want to go through the trouble of coding it all in or whatever.

>>125388592
it was totally tailored for the game's flow. i'd say yeah, couldn't really fit any other game.

>>125388736
i think you meant to reply to me, but do you mean my own music or the music for the game? because like i said, it's all context-sensitive bits meant to go along with gameplay, not linear songs. can't really just slap it up on soundcloud.

>>
>>125388928

it looked good on the "terminal" text, but actually in a game this looks fucking awful.

You're getting possitive replies though, I guess it's a meme.
>>
>>125389173
But almost every game is just a copy of something else or just following the rules of a genere. I don't see how your music can't fit a similar game unless you got picked to make the shovel knight lost or something
>>
>>125388736
>If it can't be enjoyed without a game it wasn't very good to begin with

If the individual sprites in your game can't be enjoyed as whole and complete works of static art, it's not very good to begin with.

If I can't sit down and read and enjoy your game's source code from beginning to end like a novel, with no knowledge of programming, it's shit code and needs to be rewritten.
>>
>>125389524
>if the art of the game doesn't look good on its own and its something that every other programmer would reject then you did a worthless job. If a project fails the artists gets his art and can use it for something else, the musician gets his music and the programmer gets his code and is free to get another artist and musician and start another project that is it

nah dude, i get what you're saying, but i wanted the music to compliment everything specific about that game. i didn't want to halfass it and end up with generic one-size-fits-all public domain-sounding music. that's always been a pet peeve of mine when it comes to video games.

to sell a cat you put it up the canon in the corner of the room and it shoots it.

I could make it so your receive the newspaper every couple of minutes and the more cats you sell the more news change and talk about kitty overlords unleashing hell on humanity and take over major cities and stuff.

Could go for a specs-op/eversion ripoff that lasts for like an hour.

Whatever the case, it looks like your weapon is too small when spinning there, and the animation is too long.

I don't know exactly what's going on there, but perhaps a distinct getting-ready hold and then a super quick spin/single slash would look better (though I guess the latter more appropriate for a sword).

Took me awhile to get that "shoot bats at things" makes trees grow. "Grow the world trees" is ambiguous as fuck.

Also, why can you shoot when you don't have a bat... if not having a bat means shooting isn't effective?

And why does shooting bats at trees make them grow ? ? ?
