Muh autism keeps me from wanting to play until units look neon-y so I've plenty of time to work on them. I'll probably go Umayyads > Asturia > then either south to north so Longbeards and the Romans (real brief since they are unplayable) then Avars then Charlemagne and so on, or skip to Charlemagne.
Probably release updates of it periodically, so once I have the Umayyads and Asturia done, then an update when I have the Italians and Avars done. And it will still as noted before be a mostly reskin with minimal changes and none of which should deal with stats or combat (for instance I may need to have a land_units entry for Umayyad archers and armored archers - not to change their stats but because CA gave them simple bows when they should have reflex bows. However I have to change the animation entry in land_units to switch them over).

How do I play as Charlemagne? It takes me forever to get an army to fight the Saxons and by then they've already occupied almost half my kingdom. I gave up and played a Westphalia campaign and the AI forms the Kingdom of the Franks on turn 2 and meets me with two full stacks by turn 4. What are they doing that I'm not?

That's only the really big super expensive spells that only fully leveled casters can cast.
Take a look at the spell progression for Azhag, you can see every spell in the Lore of Death, most of them are buffs and debuffs.
Some lores, like the Lore of Metal, are even more focused on buffs and debuffs.
The big area kill spells probably also use more of whatever resource casters use to cast.

Well yeah, but unlike in the Tabletop it seems like casters have to level through their progression tree to get the really good spells.
And if the spells use any kind of resource to be cast then the biggest spells will certainly cost the most.
And some lore, like the Lore of Light or the Lore of Beasts, don't have an AoE nuke as their best spell or any AoE nuke at all.

Sassanids are postponed until I get celts and nords done. Will tackle white huns in the process when I get to sassanids. It's not from lack of interest as working on the Sassies will be more fun than the Celts or Nords, but I figure with AOC I might as well get it out of the way.
But yeah back in croc I adjusted the greek masks to fit some helmets, and this time around I'd do something similar - use the R2 greek mask, the R2 Eastern mask, and the Himyarite masks.
