For Retroarch on Android, is there a way to permanently fix the overlay to look fine in portrait mode?
I can temporarily fix it by tapping that little rotation icon, but it reverts every time I pause the game or switch to a different application.

Two questions, if anyone here happens to know.

1. Which GBA emulator handles romhacks well? I wanna play FFV and FFVI with restored sound/graphics.

You can emulate inputs, like using the touchpad for the cursor, wiimote shaking to a button, or mapping the tilt to a stick (or even the DS4's tilt).

Anything can be dealt with the controller with varying levels of discomfort or in game difficulty.

Some games are going to be hard as fuck without a wiimote though.

Would not recommend. Just use your mouse in one hand, and a controller in the other. That's how I played.

Here, I went and did it for you just because
http://pastebin.com/CUrypujq

Easiest thing to do would be to drop it in /data/data/com.retroarch/overlays/gamepads/snes/ and then load it, but you can only do that if you have root access.

If you don't have root, you can save common overlays from github https://github.com/libretro/common-overlays and the copy the gamepads/snes/ folder wherever you want on your phone's SD card and copy the pastebin link to it and the just direct RA to that folder to load it.

Why is VBA-M still a recommended GBA emulator for the pc? Hasn't mGBA pretty much replaced it as the go-to GBA emulator?

>>
>>125200683

You know that I made those pages like 2 years ago and like 2 other people update them right?
>>
>>125184497
The restoration ROMhacks for FFV and FFVI Advance work on real hardware, so they'll work on pretty much any GBA emulator. Try mGBA.

That said, I really do not recommend the Advance version of FFVI. Even with restoration patches, it is still inferior to the SNES version due to having less visible screen area due to lower resolution, worse sound quality due to GBA limitations, and a lot more lag overall. The localization is technically more faithful, but some deem it more boring and trite.

A better idea IMO is to play the SNES version with either the Woolsey Uncensored patch (if you prefer the original SNES localization) or the Relocalization patch (if you prefer the GBA localization). Both come with lots of bugfixes and helpful changes that improve the overall experience. Only thing you'd be missing from the GBA version is the extra content, which is mediocre anyway.

FFV Advance with the restoration patch is great, though.

Super Mario Galaxy? Wii Remote and Nunchuck. You can try mapping it to a normal gamepad, but aiming with the remote is necessary in a lot of points and mapping it to the right stick doesn't work as well as you'd expect.

There was a recent addition in Dolphin that allows the newer Wii Remote Plus (-TN version) to connect using the stock Microsoft stack so you don't need to install the Toshiba one. So the process is even easier than before.

Oh, and for future reference, how would I easily go about adjusting overlays like this? I'm grateful for the portraited SNES overlay, but I'd like to know how to adjust this for other overlays with similar "issues".
>>
>>125222867
All I did in this case was switch all the instances of "overlay0_descs" to "overlay1_descs" and vice versa, and then swapped the names at the top, which just makes the portrait layout overlay0, aka the default.

If you want to actually change the layouts, the format for a button desc is
retropad key, x position, y position, button type, width, height

The coordinate system is the most confusing part, it uses floats which represent percentages of the screen, the x and y positions are the center of the button, not a corner, and the the width and height are the distance the button spans from the center in both directions (eg the actual width is two times the percentage you put for width)

I think there are actually other modes for the coordinate system, but I've never messed with them.

Well I went and tried to install a bunch of versions to see what happens, here's the results.

>DT lite 4.10 aka pre-crapware version
Won't install on x64 systems so useless in msot cases

>DT lite 4.41 aka first x64 compatible version I could find
Doesn't force STPD install by default (SSF doesn't work unless you use emulated SCSI drives), tries to install crapware but everything is easy to disable during install, has a prompt to refuse to send anonymous stats at the end of installation, doesn't connect to the internet unless you check for update provided you disabled everything else

>DT lite 4.48 aka the last version that doesn't require .net afaik
Tries to install crapware but you can disable all of it during install, doesn't prompt you to disable anonymous stats during install , tries to connect to the internet every time you do something unless you disable the media panel, with everything disabled the interface will still connect every launch to check your license, blocking it with a 3rd party firewall is effective but will lock up the interface while it tries to check for the license.

>DT lite 10.20 aka the newest
Requires .net framework 4.0 to even work, most files aren't present in the public installer so it won't install without internet connection (you can get the offline installer by going in your temp folder myupload.dk/showfile/c4ca4236xww), tries to install crapware and a whole fucking browser during install all of which you can disable, still connect from time to time to check your license, blocking it with a 3rd party firewall is effective but will lock up the interface while it tries to check for the license, associates with archive by default (to mount them as drives)

All of DT versions set themselves to automatically start with windows (can't disable without msconfig.

Uninstalls leave traces.

I only test with a 3rd party firewall because the default one in windows is shit in my opinion.

cont.
>>
>>125228974
cont.

>Alcohol 52% free edition 2.0.3.8314 (and older)
Most of the downloads for installer are just downloaders (that are loaded with crapware) including the ones available on the official site (can find an offline one with a bit of searching, easy to distinguish due to size myupload.dk/showfile/c4ca4236zt4), will install smart file advisor (not sure what it does it doesn't seem to connect to anything and can be disbled with msconfig) but only if you're online during the main install (even if the installer shows otherwise), will by default install additional programs that aren't adware but aren't useful for just the purpose of mounting image with SSF (one is a program to share SCSI drives over network, another is useful to determine the best mode to dump disc using the program and the last one is a drive cloaker for usage with securom and safedisc protected games that are pissy about virtual drives), will connect to the internet to check for update if you open the main interface (can disable easily) won't connect to anything otherwise unless you manually check for update, will ask you to send a report about your computer on the first launch (easy to decline), will automatically start with windows (just the automount service).

So in short both will install shit if you're not careful and both are fine if you pay attention to what you're doing.

All the test were using a VM with a fresh install of 7 Ultimate x64 SP1

Will test will test both with Unchecky and report if it stops all the malware.

At the very least the patch fixes a lot of slowdown issues. Also, the localization is better than the ancient fan translation from forever ago (not sure if there's better ones now), and way better than Woolsey's abortion that only came to light in the PS1 port. The extra content is also not too bad. At the very least I'd argue it's not a bad choice, compared to FFVI Advance, which is in most cases a downgrade.

>Use VCD
>tell people to not use shit disc images
these are not a realistic propositions for a couple of reasons.
VCD has virtually no cli & though I would promote the use of proper rips, it is my intention to support the largest swath possible.
I found it really frustrating to be told to "redownload" a "proper rip" when I was getting into emulation. My intended audience may have no experience with emulation and very little with computers in general. I don't wish to deter users who got their games from some unknown source.
While this may seem deplorable to many of you here, let me remind you that retro video-games are for children.

I know, quite shame too VCD is really really good compared to the other two if you only deal with .img / .ccd / .sub, it's also quite refreshing to find an installer you can mash through without any repercussion.

Does that also avoid the media bar? (or is it not present in 4.47?)

By media bar I mean the thing on the right of pic related not the browser toolbar (and it does send shit regardless of what you tell it), the settings that affects this also stays in the registry so you can only be sure if you do a fresh install on a fresh windows install.

Well if the mediabar is active in the settings it does try to connect every time you mount an image regardless of how you do it, the only way to stop it completely is turning it of completely in the settings or using a version that doesn't have it.

Hey, so I was futzing around with PPSSPP, and all of the audio sounds super blown out and tinny. Is this just an issue with the emulator that only I'm bothered by, or is there some hidden or unrelated configuration option that I'm not seeing, or what?

I'm not having any framerate issues, but I'm also not seeing any sort of audio configuration options to make it sound less shit, so maybe I'm just the only one who cares. That, or the PSP had shit audio and I only ever noticed now that it's coming out of actual speakers.

Not really going anywhere, rustation through libretro rust could be more promising.

Problem is that Exophase's NEON GPU has a ton of bugs in the non-ARM codepaths and that it's challenging to get any kind of decent performance out of it.

>Left: Jabo's, Glide64, Rice, etc.
>Right: GlideN64: My Little Plugin, Filtering is Magic.

Basically, RE2 N64 uses two textures for portraits. Other plugins filter the top and bottom half independently, causing that unsightly line across the middle. They also filter each background strip independently, causing ugly lines across the whole image. This problem affects heaps of games, not just RE2. GLideN64's experimental texture filtering system filters such textures cleanly. But at the moment, there are obvious errors such as incorrect clamping and wrapping--note the edges of Claire's portrait--and RE2 backgrounds don't currently render anyway. Glide64 used some dirty, dirty hacks to make them render, which caused problems with high resolution mode, and alignment problems with some scenes. Once GLideN64 fixes these issues, RE2 N64 is going to look amazing. Bad texture filtering has given the game a bit of an unfair reputation, IMO. What would be cool, though, would be a texture pack for GLideN64 adding the high quality textures from other versions. If someone could get their hands on the MORT speech codec tools, the muffled voice acting could be replaced, too, kinda like the recent project to replace Perfect Dark N64's voice acting with the crystal clear XBLA version's.

I see torrents of NeoRageX 5.x + roms but afaik the project's been dead for over a decade. Are those legit?

I tried downloading some mega mame torrents too, but most of the games I want to play (e.g. metal slug) don't show up on the list after running audit even though the files are in the rom directory.

Unlike what I've said a while ago some PSX games do have the same issue for some reason. Crash Bandicoot for instance likes to draw the 2D logos and backgrounds in the intro using a big number of small quads instead of a single big one. I have no idea why.

Here's an example with a quick filtering hack, it messes up the background completely.

I don't know what's the best way to deal with that. Having a heuristic like GlindN64 to detect when it's a single texture rendered in several batches could do the trick in this case but it wouldn't solve the issue with overlapping 2D elements in games like Final Fantasies or RE's backgrounds.

Ideally you'd want to filter all the 2D elements in the image at once in post (like you usually do for 2D consoles) while you would use other algorithms for the 3D polys but it's a bit tricky to do, especially with semi-transparency.

So in other words nearest ftw.

Yeah, I've noticed that same problem in Pete's plugins. IIRC they had a bunch of options for filtering, namely whether you wanted to filter everything, everything minus sprites, or just textured polygons. If ever I dicked around with filtering, I only ever filtered textures without touching 2D stuff like sprites or backgrounds, precisely because you end up with so many problems like that.

>>125330282
>It's the definitive version.
No it ain't, it butchers everything that isn't the control scheme.
>>
>>125329701
Also, why bother with 2D filtering for PS1 emulation? N64 emulators have to deal with it because the real hardware did so and not filtering 2D stuff would be inaccurate (though one wonders how things would look if N64 video plugins had the same filtering options that Pete's plugins have, allowing you to filter 3D and not 2D), but PS1 did no filtering of any kind, so any filtering that could be applied ought to only be aimed at textures in 3D models, where there may be a tangible benefit. 2D stuff does not benefit from being filtered whatsoever, and if one desires it to be filtered, it ought to be done in post-processing.

As much as I don't mind tank control, the control scheme in RE2 N64 is better but it completely fucks the difficulty because they never bothered to rebalance the game to accommodate for it, add to that worse audio quality, less FMV/worse FMV, missing content and no way in hell can you consider that version to be the definitive one, that would probably be NGC or PC sourcenext.

Me again. Games are working like a charm, and now that I fixed the overlays, it's much more comfortable to use RA.
Is it possible to make use of core specific options, though? For example, PCSX-ReARMed has options which appear to help bugs with some games, as well as other options and settings, but none of them change if I attempt to do so.
I guess I'd need to be able to access this menu while not running a game, but if I close whatever game is running, the quick menu empties, thus disallowing me from accessing these options. Am I missing something?
RA on other devices has been easier compared to this.

Never mind, I just discovered a solution.
The overlay chose to appear on that menu despite me having set it up not to, allowing me to tweak these settings.

Personally I agree but not everybody shares this opinion apparently. I've seen people in this general argue for filtered backgrounds in Final Fantasy games for instance. I have yet to see a comparison of background-only filter vs. post-processing filter though.

After all even upscaled the PSX 3D geometry is usually primitive enough that it looks a bit rough without post-processing IMO.

What are your favorite games to emulate when smoke?

Emulating the dream emulator when trip:

That being said it can become overwhelming pretty fast, better have a plan B if it starts spiraling out of control.

>As much as I don't mind tank control, the control scheme in RE2 N64 is better but it completely fucks the difficulty because they never bothered to rebalance the game to accommodate for it
They never rebalanced RE4 to accomdate mouse aim, and PC with mouse and keyboard is still definitive.
>>
>>125331765
>no way in hell can you consider that version to be the definitive one, that would probably be NGC or PC sourcenext.
Because tank controls+fixed camera angles are mind-suckingly awful. They were enough to make me refuse to play REMAKE until the HD version came along with non-tank controls.

>They never rebalanced RE4 to accomdate mouse aim
Not comparable in any way, mouse aim doesn't turn RE4 into a walking sim, most of the records on that game use controller too.

>>125338079
Casual kiddies need not apply, if you don't want old control scheme don't play old games.
>>
>>125337997

No need to double-post m8

Also, RE4 Wii is the definitive version as it's based on the GameCube release and not the downscaled PS2 version.

>>125338498

To be fair tank controls were always shit. I fucking hated those back in the days.
>>
>>125338565
The new PC port has most of what made the NGC/Wii version much better than the other and even stuff that the NGC/Wii version never had.

>>125337997
>They never rebalanced RE4 to accomdate mouse aim
60fps mode makes every enemy react faster and mùakes your hitboxes much less forgiving and it's PC exclusive so yes they did technically.

>>125338776
Well yeah but if you make the game around it you can't just replace it with something vastly better and pretend it doesn't cause problem with the game, imagine NES castlevania with mid-air controls or older shmups with a focus button, yes it's better if you only take the controls in consideration but once you take the whole game into consideration it just doesn't work.

One good counter example would be RE6, yes you can use tank controls but it's gonna be way harder than the game should be.

Hey guys, I had a question if you don't mind helping me. I'm playing FFV on the GBA for the first time and I wanted to try and emulate the sound as close as possible to the SNES. I know it can't reach 1:1, but, I'm looking for some help to optimize my audio experience.

Obviously I went ahead and got this:
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/563/

I also got the latest versions of both mGBA and VBA-M with the GBA Bios. I've patched the rom correctly, at least I assume so. I don't know if I have the EU or U version of FFV but I assume U. I'm still getting some popping though. Could someone with more experience with me than this list optimal settings for either of those emulators when it comes to sound? I really want to try and get it as close as I can to the SNES games while enjoying all the new stuff in the GBA version. Thanks!

That patch is for EU roms only. You'll know if your copy is EU or not if it gives you options for multiple languages.
>>
>>125298348
Oh god, Paheal has an ad that won't let you close the tab now. I had to fucking close it through task manager.
>>
>>125341647
Well, there's actually 4 IPS patches in here. It's the US version I'm using as I found out when I patched it wrong thinking I had messed up patching it.

That being said, there's still a lot of popping and cracking, it's painful to my ears. Is there anyway I can reduce it anymore?

Custom hostfile master race.
>>
>>125341984
No clue as to whether said cracks and pops are due to the actual game sound or the emulator. You could try running them through RetroArch's version of those cores, since it's pretty much designed to eliminate crackling on the emulator side. If that doesn't work, then it's just the GBA being the GBA.
>>
>>125342178
Alright, let me update to the latest version of RA and then go from there. Thank you, I'll let you know what it is in a moment.
>>
>>125335839
RetroArch now supports per-game core options but it seems you are on an oooooold version
>>
>>125332609
lol wimp UI
>>
>>125342823
I didn't mean per-core options, which 1.2.2 can do, but those core specific options which only show up in the quick menu when playing a game.
For some reason, you can't adjust them with tapping and need to use an overlay to edit those.
