yeh multiple people pushed for a buff to light infantry to make highlanders and us light rifles and the eb shit viable, ideally without buffing gornos, and eugen did the exact opposite of what was intended by the advice
This patch is way better than the last shitty one
>finally getting into DCS
>only full-simulation aircraft I have is the Meme-21bis and Su-25T included in basegame
>have FC3 but nothing in that is full-autism
How much do you guys think shit will be on sale for in a week or so? Wasn't everything -70% last x-mas? I want that A-10C. Maybe the Czech trainer shitpile too.
Also, I've tried running the 1.5beta and shit just crashes every time I try to load any mission that isn't one of the "training" ones. Have tried refuckulating my graphics settings all the way down to low, didn't help, so now I'm back on the default Steam version.
Finally, does anyone know how to get this piece of shit engine to interact nicely with Steam? never shows me as ingame and I have no overlay, game launches just fine in its own window that Steam doesn't want to talk to. Have tried searching both Steam and DCS/ED forums but no one knows shit.
>>124690514
>Chinese ZTQ-62G gun noise increased by about 20%
Okay. For what though?
>>124691259
To make it easier to detect the stealth tank by listening I guess.
>>124691259
To make it easier to spot when its shooting at things. It's very powerful force recon.
>>124691143
Sales likely won't be more than 40% off anymore as stated by ED in some news post a while ago
Dunno about the crashing, try making a separate clean install of the beta
>Patch is almost entirely CW and Soviet buffs
I'm ok with this
>BMP is now 35% accuracy.
Which means it's objectively a better gun platform than most actual tanks even close to that price range.
>>124692410
>ADATS now 70% accuracy.
>Range against helicopters 3325m
For 10 points more, you'll get a Tunguska-M missile that can destroy tanks with a higher accuracy than any PACT ground vehicle.
LNS said that the Viggen is almost done, right?
Fuck me I'm so hype
Full fidelity modern multirole with a2g radar
>>124693336
You also lose the gun that demolishes planes without playing RNG games, and ADATS missiles cost a lot more to resupply. As an AA piece the tunguska is still superior.
>>124693741
It seems like a lot of shit is pretty close to completion, I would imagine after 2.0 comes out we'll have a steady stream of new aircraft coming out each month if ED makes the devs space out the releases to be 1 a month or something.
F-18 should be pretty close to complete, F-14 early next year, bunch of WW2 planes, Viggen, Gazelle,eurofighteretc...which will probably be garbage because VEAO,
>>124694191
Hey did you know that if you aren't a shitter you have a SEAD plane behind what ever other plane you bring out.
Wow with this info you'll probably improve your gameplay by like 40%.
You're welcome btw.

>>124694235
>F-14 early next year
Official estimate is second half of next year. They said in the September update that they're focusing more on the other two modules.
>>124694594
I was under the impression the F-14A model would be early next year with the A+ and B coming later, either way, we're getting a lot of content in the new year probably.

Their internal beta is scheduled for early next year afaik, not the final product. That would be insane. LN announced the tomcat long before it was near completion just because of the hardon it gives people as a one off.
>>124695153
Ah okay, I must have misread that at some point. I just hope that LN and ED are able to make carrier ops more realistic with pitching decks and whatnot. It'll be pretty important for the F-18 module too.

Why is Eagle Dynamics getting so much shit done lately? You'd think that half of the stuff they'll release next year, like a plane with proper A2G radar would've been a thing by the time FC2 came out.
>>124698507
Because it's not Eagle Dynamics.
>>124698507
All the awesome stuff such as A2G radar, theaters that are actually interesting, WW2 AI units and such are done by LNS and not ED though
>>124698539
Pretty sure the A2G radar and ground vehicles actually fucking navigating around obstacles is something made by ED, not third parties.

>using Steam with DCS
Stop using DCS on Steam. There is literally no benefit, only additional headaches. The reason nobody cares is because nobody who has been using DCS for a long time has it on Steam. They either started standalone, or moved to standalone from Steam.
source: I ran standalone, moved to Steam for a short time, no benefits, only drawbacks, went back to standalone.
>>124705914
Okay rate my corrections
>>124694235
F-18 is nowhere near finished and F-14 is not going to be early next year. F-14 will be middle of next year in the best possible unrealistically optimistic case. More than likely it'll be either the end of next year or early 2017.
Viggen and Corsair seem possible for early next year.
>>124699101
LNS is probably making their own radar model again, just like they did for the MiG-21's radar and its RSBN. There is no DCS level radar, so LNS made a custom radar model using just basic engine hooks. The RSBN system was introduced after MiG-21 by ED with the L-39, but the MiG-21 needed one so they just made their own RSBN system.
Same is probably happening for their air to ground radar. They'll make their own radar model and then ED will release F-18 in 6 years with the "canon" DCS air-air/air-ground full fidelity radar model.
>>124691143

What are the drawbacks other than Steam apparently not being able to interface with the game at all? I'd originally tried this as standalone a couple years ago but never did much and eventually uninstalled, bought FC3 and the MiG-21 through steam during the sale for Thanksgiving.
Finally, I see that the Mirage 2000C's going into beta for the people that pre-ordered it this month. That means it'll be out very early next year, right?
Otherwise the leaked stuff looks pretty interesting, just waiting on them to come out's going to be an issue, Guess I can make it to early 2017 at the latest before seeing those Tomcats (speaking of which, which F-14 are we getting? A? D?) and Super Hornets.
>>124739730
Steam has the benefit of having download servers that don't run on dial-up, it's not as bad as some people say compared to standalone, there really is very little difference.
F-14 will be the A, A+, and B variants
We will never get a super bug, just the regular bug

With Steam, you now have 2 layers of DRM over your game and I hate having to put up with Starforce by itself. It's just added headaches. The other is that I don't trust Steam to manage anything that is often modded.
On top of that, there's the sales thing where you can't buy things from the DCS store and use them on Steam anymore. That used to be a thing, but not anymore. Maybe it's changed again based on what some anon said earlier, and if they did that's news to me.
Standalone also gets stuff earlier and access to betas and alphas. Often, servers will use beta versions of patches, and to my knowledge you can't use those on Steam. In terms of modules, MiG-21 for example was available for like a month on standalone before it was released on Steam. It was cheaper on the DCS store as well. If you want a more recent example, the 2.0 alpha (NTTR) is unplayable on Steam.
I also don't trust the Steam version of DCS to work correctly because ED doesn't care about Steam.
That ED even made 1.5 available at all on Steam is unusual and not the norm.
There are only 2 positives I can think of to ever running DCS on Steam.
1. You have a hard on for Steam tracking your hours. If you want Steam chat and whatever you can do whatever it is that people do that.
2. When a patch gets pushed to live, Steam will update faster because the DCS Updater is slow. Honestly though, until the 2.0 alpha and its 30GB downloads, I've never had any problems with the DCS Updater and found it to be very reliable and do everything that Steam would do, but with more control and safer.
A new patch, a new nerf for China.
>>124741062
Ya, because DLC 3 and Map Pack one were not both fantastic for China.
>>124740847
Add browsing while playing to the Steam list (although the Steam browser is shit) since the standalone game hangs itself if you alt-tab out for too long.
>>124741825
I just play the game in fullscreen window and alt-tab like a madman. Even when I do play in true fullscreen (I swap back and forth between the two very often depending on what I'm doing) I haven't had much problem with alt-tabbing.
>>124740847
>If you want Steam chat and whatever you can do whatever it is that people do that.
Pretty much just this, it's getting annoying having to pause and alt-tab every time some fucking sperg messages me. Otherwise it'd be a non-issue, will start looking around for that fix.
Going to work on getting my Steam keys tied to my ED account finally and probably just run the standalone, but still going to avoid the beta updates for a while. Looks like the issue I'm having is in both 1.5 and 2.0 betas. May just be a graphics driver thing, I haven't updated my Catalyst bullshit in a month.
Also probably going to pre-order that Mirage while it's only $48..
>>124740847
>2 layers of DRM
What the fuck are you talking about? There's only one layer, and it's starforce.
>>124740516
Apparently it's a prop for the upcoming movie "Spectral". It's being shot in Hungary, so they're just working with what's available (MiG-21s and MiG-23s).
>>124742963
To me it's the same as clicking Play on a game in Steam, which launches another launcher like UPlay or Origin, and then launches the game from there.
It's another layer that doesn't need to be there.
>>124742963
A decent number of games require you to be logged into steam to play them, practically all of them are steamworks. Since they unfucked the offline mode awhile back this isn't a major issue, like the guy you replied to i'd rather have it not exist.
There is going to be a discussion spanning multiple threads if steam is drmIt obviously is, fucktard
>>124743196
You don't have to have steam running for a huge majority of games. It simply uses Steam to download and version-check. You can download it, delete steam, and still play your game.
>>124743225
Most games do not require it.
>shitposting/elitism about steam vs standalone intensifies
Bored burger here.
Would LOSAT be balanceable?
It goes without saying that the existing ATGM vehicles for US are abysmal. (Vehicles, not NOD stealth tanks.)
An 80 kg missile is pretty enormous. 1500 m/s is pretty fast. So it's an AP round that weighs as much as an American teenager. It's lighter successor, the CKEM, killed an ERA-equipped T-72 in a (doubtless scripted) 2007 test.
Obviously it can't have its full 5km+ range, but would a KE-type and -speed doom-ATGM be too inherently unbalanced, even on the god-awful humvee chassis?

Range scaling is used in wargame to keep things manageable. 5km range IRL results in 2800m ingame (see the soviet Kokon series, and take note the 8km hellfire is also 2800m, putting the Kokon and LOSAT at the low end of the 2800m bracket). I really dont know enough to say whether 25 (TOW-2), 26 (Hellfire, HJ-9, Maverick B) or 28AP (Kh-23M, Kh-25ML, Kh-66, all fixed wing exclusives) would be appropriate, but I think 30AP, which requires an explosive warhead that outmasses the entire LOSAT missile by quite alot, would be too much.
Make it 75pt or 80 if the speed is really high, maybe go to 85 or 90 if you want to give it 28AP.

What missile has 30 AP, out of curiosity?
>Make it 75pt or 80 if the speed is really high, maybe go to 85 or 90 if you want to give it 28AP.
28 KE AP would probably be worth the extremely dubious HMMV chassis and the 4 missile ammo capacity, assuming decent accuracy. Assuming semi-genuine speeds, flight time is ~2 seconds at max range.
28 HE makes it impractically expensive. Paying +30 points for 3 AP and some flight time over the Tow-2 HMMV doesn't exactly give me a raging freedom boner.
>>124753320
The Kh-29 (both D and T), the AS30L, AJ 168 and later model Mavericks (E, F and G).
Why on earth would you give it a 4 missile capacity, even the Humvee with the TOW-2 has 8. Only IFVs and obsolete ATGMs with budget price tags and a literal jeep mounting tend to get 4 shots.
You need to look at the Shturm-S and WZ-550 for pricing, the 2625m-2800m range jump is very expensive for ATGMs.
I was also assuming a 70% accuracy and somehow failed to mention that, you could easily drive its cost down by reducing that, but that really doesn't seem all that authentic.

Hey, Wgg. What are the biggest factors that make Wargame so defensively favored? Are these ideas anywhere in the right neighborhood?
1. Smoke is sluggish and difficult to use. Artillery has too little effect against entrenched Infantry if it doesn't actually kill the entire squad.
1a. I think that this might be helped by adding status effects to inf, same as Vehicles. E.g. Sergeant Killed. Rocket Launcher Lost.
2. Indestructible terrain. See that bamboo shack? It's an invisibility cloak/bunker forever, even if burned to the ground. Forests are less guilty of this, but only marginally.
3. Absolutely insane Optics system. This, along with 2, is what makes tanks and helicopters relatively ineffective if not spammed. It's nearly impossible to fire back against ATGM or ADN (missile) even with grotesquely indiscriminate weapons like 100+mm rockets.
3a. This is particularly bad with forests edge/town ATGMs. Firing guided ATGMs directly at the front of a T-90/Abrams is an excellent way to get killed. The several seconds that your missile takes to reach your target is plent of time for a tank (with modern optics, who is directly facing you) to figure out roughly where you are and blast you.
What am I missing?
>>124774379
dumb balance and pricing that favours tactics where nearly none of your units are expendable, and those that are, are worthless performance wise.
Artillery that is so weak it can't be used offensively, but strong enough to destroy single units vital for offence.
No call in timers for planes so they are always a get out of jail free card if people advance 5cm beyond AA net.
Maps full of choke points.
And worst of all, a sighting system that gives you no ability to see if an area has been checked for units, and invisible people standing in fields because they have stealth emitters.
NAME A BETTER ANTI-HELO SAM THAN THE ADATS!
protip: You can't because you can't see any other anti-helo SAMs because all of your recon helos are dead.

Imo everything could be fixed if instead of the retarded camouflage system we had now the "stealth" of your units progressively degraded as long as they were within line of sight of an enemy unit.
Higher optics and numbers being present would cause "stealth" to degrade faster.
This means you wouldn't be able to get away with static defenses, sit in the enemy's LOS long enough and they'll fucking see you.
>>124774890
>everyone is a shitter but me.
>>124774379
4. Tanks mysteriously lack even the most basic of counter measures from WW2 like smoke launchers because 'waahh, micro'.
5. Defense doesn't really have to do anything once their shit is in place. It's very hands off.
6. Game limits the amount of units you can field, which automatically favors defense.
7.Recon units are dogshit and often miss shit that you should easily be able to see.
8.Everything about infantry is just incredibly slapped together and lazy. It's just utterly fucked from multiple angles.
9. SEAD is useless against anyone that isn't totally asleep at the wheel.
10.Artillery is ass compared to EE. Little means of making people move from entrenched positions unless you use very specific units from certain nations.
11.Slow game pacing lets any retard casually react to your maneuvers with panic-buys or planes.
>>124774998
mite b cool
It would need to work both ways, though; an OH-58 flying by at max speed shouldn't be able to spot a sniper team that's sitting still in the middle of a forest and not shooting.
>>124774697
>not realizing that there are never any 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4 lobbies open because ded game
Hence why I stopped playing. Eugene ruined any chance for Wargame being enjoyable with ALB and it's just been dieing a slow death to casualitis cancer since. Team matches are never balanced, and if you're not with friends, you can't even communicate effectively, making the point of a team entirely moot. There's just no purpose to team games in an RTS besidespeople wanting to hide how bad they are by blending in with a crowd and hopefully getting carried or at least having others to blame.
>>124774379
>1. I disagree. The dispersion is generally shit though, you can spot and mortar/blast a light vehicle only to have it be scared shitless without a scratch on it.

>>124775234
Might be cool indeed. If only these things were easily moddible. It'd be cool to try these out.
>>124776296
But the point in 3a is that it's not really necessary to do either, defensively.
ATGM inf/vehicles in cover are literally invincible against non-position Fire until after they've gotten several volleys off. Let that sink in. They can't be killed because invisibility = invincibility against direct fire in WG. This is silly.
>>124776752

>>124777007

>>124776296

Not same anon.
But Infantry has no way in forests or fields to protect themselves from HE (Foxholes/hasties are a common thing for infantry to know how to do) They stay tightly clustered even in blocks of buildings, Ratjer then spreading out to be an effective unit.
Buildings hold a single inf group no matter how large, a single building can fit fourty people if they are all in a single unit.
INF is not smart enough to wait for AT to be effective before firing it (Most militaries train this so they don't need to be baby sat.)
Probably more stuff too, but really with the scale war game tries to portray units over all need to beable to make basic decisions, like, My weapon has a 2000km range, we have 6 shots for it, we can't pen the armor on that tank unless we are lucky, and our accuracy drops off at that range anyways, let's shoot all the shots!
You shouldn't need that level of micro on units when you are normally having multiple fronts and multiple units.
>>124777090
Huh. I'll have to experiment with that.
>>124777007
Try approaching a town with ATGM inf in it with low-high Optics vehicles at full speed. You will take multiple shots before the spotting system lets you shoot back.
As for vehicles, just try attacking a position with NOD Stealth Tanks. Uh. I mean Scout Bradleys.
Anyway. I'm going to sleep. I'll come back tomorrow after playing buffed CW and complain about the fact that it isn't USSR.

>>124776346
MoW actually does handle quite a bit automatically if you let it. Sometimes not very well, but it at least tries. In fact, the higher in level of play you go, the more important it becomes to 'partition' your micro and not sit around trying to micromanage every little thing, but rather, find a balance between what to delegate to the AI, and what you should bother directly controlling. Sometimes it's actually fairly advantagous to select a group of infantry and spam F1 to chuck a mass of grenades, rather than direct controlling one guy to crawl up and throw a single cooked one. particularly when attempting a 'shock' type of attack.
Osa gets the emergency optical mode, but Roland2 doesn't get the optical normal mode.
Madmat told us 100 times Roland2 can't have it, because it's an emergency mode(which is bs) and other AA units like OSA have such an mode, too. Eugen keeps on braking their own rules: Roland2, PzF3, Eurofighter, Mi24V, APILAS, Patriot, PzH2000, S300
It made a unit never take (base OSA) an actual consideration now.
>"Eugen this is unacceptable!"
>>124732986
I'm amazed the US didn't turn its crash site into a crater with another bombing.
>>124777186
They do get a -40% damage in forest and -70% in buildings. Also close range AT weapons have about a 1.5x multiplier on their AP power over what the rockets could reasonably penetrate, compared with cannons or ATGMs. This is to simulate that the infantry really did hold fire until the AT was effective, they fired at a weak points instead of directly into the gladis plate, ect.
None of this is a great replacement for a proper infantry entrenching system and a more intelligent infantry AI, but its not as though Eugen hasn't at least considered the problem.

The area around Vechta is shit terrain, full of bogs. This'll allow us to incorporate a terrain type not previously seen in Flashpoint, the Bog, where it restricts movement like a forest, but leaves you just as exposed as a field. So essentially, they're a bunch of no-go zones that, like lakes, you generally don't want your troops in, but unlike lakes they can actually be physically crossed.

Not at all.
Tanks still expensive.
Everything has it's "realistic" ranges, so buks and SEAD shoot eachother from across the map and tanks dominate the battlefield like they're supposed to. CVs still expensive.
Barrage arty all has higher HE.
The "numbers per card" has been thrown out for everything that's not a plane, so you don't need to worry about slots for extra shit when you get, say, 51 veteran T-80U in armored deck with one card.
>>124809580

Would a fix for this be just much larger maps? I mean when you give battalions(its agreed the WG is battalion level right?) access to regimental and brigade resources it will be a bit weird for map and range scaling.

It may have been a factor in a previous version of wargame, but currently GUID only means that you miss if the platform dies or the target lands. It's a red herring and it's practically the same as STAT F&F.
>>124810883
>So planes and helos are semi pointless?
ATGM/SEAD/ASFs still work well because they have stand-off capability.
But IR SAMs are a nightmare now so bombers and heloes are both useless.
>(its agreed the WG is battalion level right?)
With support from regimental/brigade/divisional/corps/etc. assets. But too much support
>Does this include ATGMS?
Yes. PACT enjoys having a decisive range advantage with them, so BMPs and TLGMs are actually useful now. If the mod gets more popular, a meta will form that revolves around having a decent amount of decent units, rather than a ton of shit units or handful of micro'd wunderwaffen. Thanks to rangescaling, the guy who brings 2 T-72Bs will shit on the guy who brought an M1A2, at least on most maps.

>>124811173

That sounds like it would obsolete superheavies in general; currently you get cheap tanks to beat APCs in number and you get superheavies to beat cheap tanks (because a single superheavy takes a very long time to kill APCs in number or infantry or whatever). Plus superheavies are more vulnerable to AT planes than massed tanks, so why would you even bother with them if they also lose to said massed tanks?
>>124812087
Maybe it's because superheavies area dumb concept that shouldn't be in the game in the first place
>>124811173
But would a map increase mitigate some of these issues? Just curious
>>124812204
Never understood the meta of WG:RD, seemed really silly to me
Thoughts?
Is it just turn-based shit?
>>124812204
Superheavies are super dumb when there's a lot of points and you can get both a super and a couple supporting tanks, but when you have to choose between either one super or a couple smaller tanks I find it a very good dilemma with tradeoffs for either choice.
>>124811125
I thought guided worked like atgms were the shooter had to perform multiple 'hit checks' to stay on target and incoming fire could modify the result of one of the checks, causing a missile to miss.
3 lanes, kill enemy creep to let your ground forces seize the bridges/towns/oil derricks.
>>124812565
Multiple hit checks is a myth that gets parroted around but nobody has provided any evidence for. It doesn't exist in the game.
Missiles will be forced to miss if their kinematic properties or whatever can't be bent far enough by the engine to graphically depict a hit, but the only missile I'm aware of with this issue is the HAWK, which is daamn slow. I don't think this has anything to do with GUID, it's just the missile being retarded slow.
>>124812803

>>124812937

Well, it goes something like this:
In the lobby, you and someone else (Or a computer, or yourself) pick a 'scenario'. Like a gamemode (conquest, etc.), only it has specific objectives and settings in it. The map is tied to the scenario file so the only indication of what map you're on will show up in the lobby preview.
Then, the game starts.
Hey, where's your deck? Where are the deployment points?
You don't get any. The scenario designer bought your force for you. You just get to place it.
And you're placing units, not subunits.
But hey, your deployment menu is still there. Hey, look at that, 3 cards of Motostrelki, 30 each. But they're not just motostrelki, they're BMP-2s, and Iglas, and AGS-17s, and whatever else. Together, all apart of the same unit under the label "Motostrelki consisting of 9x inf, 9x bmp, etc...) Instead of a deployment cost, there's simply a timer there that will tell you when they automatically spawn.
You select your 10 T-80s and tell them to move to the first sector. Only they don't move, they don't start moving until 10 minutes later when they receive the orders you gave them. Of course, 10 minutes don't actually pass because that would be boring as fuck. Minutes are skipped when nothing in them happens. It's like this for every unit, so you don't get to micro. You give all your units orders, then click "start" which begins real-time and issues your orders.
CVs don't capture sectors anymore. You keep them next to your 3 T-80 units (or 30 T-80s) so that when you give them orders, it takes 10 minutes for them to act instead of 2 hours. Speaking of sectors, ownership is now based off of several factors, like:
-How many of your units are in the sector
-How many enemies your units killed in the sector
-How close your units are to the center of the sector
They don't generate points, but rather just give you a whole ton when the game ends, and that along with any other objectives, determines whether you won the battle or not.

He thinks IRST is the future, and that it's a real shame that both the Russians and Europeans both already have effective systems in their planes. Between the increasing prevalence of both stealthy designs and an ECM filled battlefield, IRST being something that's both passive and very difficult to hid against is a very valuable asset.
We were both a bit drunk, but I thought it was interesting and worth sharing.
I also asked him how IFF worked but I barely remember that because he gave me a really technical answer.

Get it if it's on a steep sale. Otherwise don't bother. Multiplayer is pretty much dead and the gameplay is pretty meh anyway. If you want a good RTT go assault squad 2, or if you're willing to play a game still somewhat early in development, Call to Arms. At least in those you have a decent population for ALL modes of play(Wargame devolved into 10v10 shitfest thanks to ALB.), and generally the game is a lot more involved and less repetitive. Easier to pick up too, IMO, without all the deck building crap chock full of noob traps.

Some people recommend the Thrustmaster T1600000000000M over the Logitech because it's supposed to be more accurate and I think has a few more buttons on it. I've never owned both, so I can't comment, but it's worth checking out if you don't want to get a full HOTAS.

This is kind of a crazy question, but would Wargame be a better game if it had fixed decks to balance against versus balancing on a per-unit basis?
I remember playing the ALB beta years ago and I thought it was fun that each deck had its advantages and disadvantages and units that just had to work with. The simple fact that you couldn't modify them also meant that crappy units you would never use suddenly have a purpose because that's all you've got so you just have to work around it or come up with tactics to help mitigate your weaknesses.
It gave all the factions a lot of flavor.
bemp
>>124844182
Balancing is still done on a fixed deck basis but with the meta decks instead of ones designed by eugen. So you don't have to work around the really shit units that won't make it into a meta deck, but you still get some weird meta shit like m36 or zptu-2 or type63.
I guess truly fixed decks would bring out that quality, but the only reason it's lacking currently is that eugen failed to give all nations proper weaknesses. They could just as easily make fixed decks and end up filling one of them with enough good units to be able to completely ignore the filler.
>>124820536
Extremely simplified version because I don't have the shitty diagrams to post:
Boom n' zoom basically requires that you start from altitude, above your target, try to line up as close to behind them as possible, and dive on them, using your energy/speed to get up in their 6 ASAP, engage the BRRRT, then get the fuck out of there, climbing away slightly, while using your speed to put distance between you and the target so that they can't retaliate.
Energy fighting is more a constant trade-off of potential/kinetic energy, involving a lot of looping maneuvers depending on the plane (I used to do this with 109s) but almost always requiring that you start with an energy advantage, dive on the target, and quickly climb back up, bringing yourself back down again as your target struggles to climb to catch you.
Energy fighting, or: "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Yo-Yo"
two bombs weren't enough
>>124851821
BnZ is a form of energy fighting.
>>124735050

>>124854698
Yes you could argue that.
However pure energy fighters cannot BnZ aswell as a pure BnZ fighter and vice versa.
Hows it feel that redfor has nothing but gimmick units that arent actually good but rather hard counter meme units
why are redfor players literally THIS bad
>>124854698
Yes, it is. It's a subset of "energy fighting" tactics. Some planes do it better than others.
For example, don't try to "energy fight" as described in a Fw. 190. They can't climb worth dick. Bf. 109 however is really good at it.
Same thing in reverse. 190 is great at boom and zoom, and its stubby wings can even help you to do some rolling maneuvers as you "zoom" away which will cost you more energy but also make you harder to get a bead on.
What's going to work for you really depends on the layout of the plane you're flying.

Are there campaigns in DCS like in the IL2 series and bms? Also how modable is DCS?

There are campaigns although they aren't dynamic, there is a user made one for the mig21 though and the author is working on a dynamic campaign engine for DCS and maybe ED will implement dynamic campaigns one day.
Also it is very modable.
>>124875454
DCS has campaigns, but they're not "dynamic" like you'd get out of other games (IL-2: BoS, etc.) Mostly just a series of missions so far as I know.
DCS is fairly moddable, but I haven't messed around with too much. Most the ones I've seen just fuck around with planes' performance and models to make them look like other planes but don't change the cockpits or anything, not certain if that's a limitation of DCS or lazy modders.
>>124875454
>Are there campaigns in DCS like in the IL2 series and bms?
Campaigns yes. Dynamic ones, no. The closest you're going to get is a community made psudo-dynamic campaign that's WIP, but promising.

There's lots of graphics mods, but it's hard to do much beyond that. Most modding in DCS is in the form of custom mission scripts.

It's hard to see afterburners in the day time. Usually you won't see anything unless you're looking down the engine nozzle. It's probably more opaque if you're closer and can just see better, but it's not going to be solid.

Will you/do you actually read the manuals or do you just jump and it figure things out from there? I feel bad when I don't read the manuals, but I really can't be arsed to.
>>124897191
>do you read manuals for a simulator
>cause that's boring
Maybe War Thunder is more up your alley
>>124897131
Maybe I'll wait a year or more then, assuming they dick everyone around with the flight model like they did with the Hawk.
>>124897191
I've got the MiG-21 and its 184-page manual.
Mostly using it as an accessory to the in-game tutorials, it goes into stuff in a bit more detail. Helps a lot for figuring out the RSBN/PRMG and radar systems.
Radar tutorial involves a lot of reading and doing shit in the cockpit, you'll want to either do it a couple times or look at the relevant sections in the manual to make sure you remember everything.
>>124897131
Wasn't the Huey pretty decent though? What'd they do?
>>124897415
I think their issue is more with lengthy beta periods where it takes forever for shit to get fixed but I don't have any of their modules so I don't know.
>>124897415
>What'd they do?
It's more about what they didn't do
It's still unfinished, with critical effects missing

What does H2 mean? I usually see Q1-4 instead.
>>124897191
>Will you/do you actually read the manuals or do you just jump and it figure things out from there?
Depends on the plane. The tutorial missions were more than enough for the Su-25T but I wouldn't rely on just that in the Mig-21 or Ka-50.
And sometimes I'm just interested in the plane. Reading manuals can be fun.

Besides, War Thunder is too casual, even for me.
>>124892823
The radar time limit is a non-factor. You're more likely to fun out of fuel first and in MP you want your radar off at all times to avoid detection unless you are using R-3R or need to IFF.
>>124897382
addendum:
You definitely want to read the MiG-21's manual for almost anything to do with weapons, at the very least, it can help you memorize what switches need to be hit in order to access shit quickly in a bind and can help you to better understand what your missiles are capable of (spoiler: they suck).
>>124897468
At least they're still adding and fixing stuff. People suck leatherneck's dick all the time but the MiG-21 still has numerous inaccuracies and bugs while the campaign is pretty garbage. It's been more than a year and the cockpit red lights are still not functional, jamming pod doesn't work, LN missiles especially the R3R are ridiculously overmodelled, rwr is worse than in IRL and the MiG-21 still has CCIP when it shouldn't.
Incase you faggots didnt know this exists
http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=129341
lets you import any pdf into the DCS kneeboard, pick any important pages from the aircraft manuals and have them appear ingame only for that aircraft, has made flying between multiple modules often a breeze
>>124898279
Can't you just use a smartphone and have access to the entire manual?
>>124898440
Sure but then you have to look away from the screen, with this you can read and fly at the same time.
The most important information in manuals is the operational limitations section. For the MiG-21's manual this is page 31-38. You'll want to remember some of the more critical data like G limits so your bombs don't drop off your pylons, engine limitations so your engine doesn't shut down in combat, RPM limits etc.
The LN manual is good but insufficient. There's a lot of misinformation and bad infographics on the MiG-21's missiles so here's an good resource that tests the weapon's performance in game. It's in German but google translates just fine. You want to know your effective range and missile G limits.

Out of curiosity, what can the Viggen do that the Su-25 and the A-10 cannot?
>>124898773
Go supersonic and is much better at defending against enemy fighters.
>>124898559
Memorize the most efficient time and range speeds too because fuel is a precious resource on the MiG-21.
>Longest range speed: 650-600 km/h IAS (decreases with altitude)
>Longest flight duration speed: 480 km/h IAS (doesn’t depend on altitude)
>>124898559
Thanks for that, didn't realize the info on the missiles was dodgy.
And yeah, I thought it was a bit funny that the radar can stay on or at least warmed up for almost twice as long as the MiG's engine'll have fuel running to it. Much longer if used as advised obviously.

>>124966971
It is dirt cheap, you get four of them in a Norwegian deck and with the exception of that nork SAM it's literary cheaper than anything that outrages it.
If you run a scandi deck, you get three of them which is pretty damn good too.
With the MiG-25 SEAD, the Raven you get just one good plane and if you lose it you're out.
The only one that gives you more for your points thn PUFF is the worst korean F-16 with AMRAAMs and HARMs.
>>124966971
As a straight SEAD unit it sucks ass, so your friend is right there. However, if you look at it in the context of lower player density matches (1vs1, 2vs2) it becomes a lot more useful for it's versatility. For only 70pts, you get-
>Very good air optics, letting you easily spot early helo movement
>Excellent cannon and decent SRAAMs letting it strafe/kill expensive helos
>30% ECM, so it's fairly survivable
>3 per card, so it's spammable
>SEAD missiles to force the enemy to either turn off their radar or risk losing it
I wouldn't take it in a 4v4 deck where the spot can be reserved for more powerful planes like F-16s, but it's one of the most cost efficient planes in game now which is essential for 1vs1s.

Just this shows you have no idea what you are talking about. The 103D costs 5pts more than the T-72B1 and will land twice as many shots per minute against it. The 103C is also competitive against it, although it isn't an outright slaughter. Firing missiles when the enemy is coming head-on is a good way to waste them, for one, and then I can't figure out why he'd think his missiles would have a chance of hitting when the target's flying between hills/mountains like that. They don't trail the target, they try to lead, so they're pretty much going into the dirt unless you're right in their six, where you should probably be using cannons anyway.
Fuck.

>>124973942
You can fire at head on, but not at max range like they seem to be, unless you want the enemy to maneuver, and you don't fire 3 fucking missiles at roughly the same time.
>>124975528
Yeah, the only reason I can think of for firing head-on at that distance is to force the enemy to maneuver a bit and possibly lose their lock on you.
Still can't decide why Mirknir decided to fire 3 in that close succession. I would've fired one then waited a couple seconds to see if a follow-up was needed.
>>124976005
I don't know why he didnt go 2 or 8 after firing and that other idiot in the su-33 going up to defeat missiles, jesus christ.

>>124975437
Tanks I would not use: starship, sheridan. sure they have big badda boom, but they are shittttttttttt.
4 cards of AA? A bit much esp. when your using two f15c. I'd say drop cent marksman - fuck that slow gas guzzling pos. Vulcans are okay ish but unless you get the pivads their range is pretty trash. Adats is comfy as fuck this patch, and i hawks are pretty damn good for not being a patriot.
Two cards of upvetted stingers? Again already tons of AA, off the top of my head I can't remember what armored get exactly, but there is probably a decent canadian infantry you should get with a cheap transport to run your cities for you. Same for two cards of bradleys - your troops are going to be expensive, maybe one card and a second card of rifleman in something cheap.
5 cards of logi? Why? Why do you need 10 command vehicles????? I'd get rid of jeeps. They are cheap, they are fast, and you get more of them, but a 120 pt. cv can eat an arty shell if they get frustrated and start blind firing likely hiding spots. If your really confident, get rid of the m577, but you probably aren't so don't.
I prefer a card of m1a1 over the m1a1(HA) to give you a more mid range tank. base m1 abrams are decent workhorses when highly vetted, and m1IP still are pretty damned good.
Consider getting a CEV in veh tab. - 2450 range and 8 HE. They can really fuck up shit either as part of a wave or just shelling a known enemy town. Also decent armor. Can also fuck up tanks because of the HE and supp.
Armored decks should have the fucking apache. When you picture 'murica in desert storm you think abrams + apache bros. It's criminal you can't get them. Balance~~
F-15 are good but I prefer a single card of 2 f-16 block 52. Yes lower vet, but in my experience, two planes beat one plane, and you get more value out of a single card. If your a pro at micro maybe f-15 can work for you, but you already have good ground based AA. Consider getting a prowler/electric boogaloo/wild weasel.
>>124976920
Checked armory - as armored I would suggest pioneers for cities, or assault engineers. Ass teams aren't as good as spets, but they can chew stuff up. Pioneer are also very effective and 10 men teams.
Also you should get either a missile plane or an iron bomber. - A10 if your cheeki, f-18 if you want to kill something quickly and get your plane out - f-18 has 4 missiles and double taps so be warned, it'll try and make two runs.
Bombers your looking at the F15D strike eagle, or the nighthawk - nighthawk being significantly easier to get deaded, but it's sneaky. the napalm phantom is also very very effective, but it can get shot down fairly easily. I used to use intruders as they were cheap and could very easily earn their points back while having 3 of them, but I've been going for heavier punching planes recently.
Special mention to canadian cf-104 starfighters. They have 2600m rockets which will fire about the same time as a ground based AA will lock on and fire back. The rockets are very very fast and will at a minimum stun or panic the AA. Very useful against tunguskas, and only 70 points. Also effective fast response to say, infantry pushes - the extra 200m range on their rockets makes a big difference. Also they are decent AA in a pinch - say if the enemy noob has decided to chase a plane all the way back to your base - throw 3 70 pointers at him and you may lose one plane but you'll probably earn 130+ back.
>>124974608
It and the prototyped wilk are the most cost effective redfor mediums, everything else is dominated by leopards.
Me and another guy from here played some newer players and I went back and watched the replay and the dude had this sitting in a forest way back. No idea his strategy here. They sat here until the end of the game.
>>124976920
>Tanks I would not use: starship, sheridan.
Is there a good low point ambush tank you would recomend instead of them?
>Two cards of upvetted stingers? All I get for rifle infantry are Canadian Rifles, CR 85', Riflemen and Riflemen 90'
The Riflemen have a better AT weapon for five points more, and honestly I was mostly taking the infantry for the Bradley, figured spending the extra five points on the 90 over the base was worth it. But dumped one stinger and down vetted the other
Aside from that there is the MAW the ERYX and engineers alongside the MANPADs
>5 cards of logi? Why?
Dumped the jeeps, usually I feel stretched thin with only four CV though, I sometimes have to cover for allies, or they get killed because I overlooked something or an enemy got a lucky strike. But I will try just the M577
>I prefer a card of m1a1 over the m1a1(HA) to give you a more mid range tank.
I was planning on using the MBT-70 Leopard C2 and the Mexas for the work horse tanks.
>Consider getting a CEV in veh tab.
Added the CEV, so it should be used similar to how a mortar is used?
>

>Is there a good low point ambush tank you would recomend instead of them?
Honestly, there isn't a dirt cheap tank, the m8 is amazing at wrecking shit from an ambush - but it has no armor so it's not going to duel well with other tanks. The reason I keep away from the sheridans is that even if they have a 152 and missiles, their accuracy is dogshit, their size is big, they're slow, they have poor fuel efficiency. If you want to pop slightly armored things use an m8 maybe backed up by a CEV or comvat. The MBT-70 are true gems - 152, (Shitty) missile, and a 20mm autocannon. They are great wreckers of assholes.
Comvats are something you can also consider - 1900m range autocannon with 70% accuracy, and even a bit of armor. Their kinetic guns can also chew up tanks from close range if the enemy isn't careful.
>Infantry
Backing up infantry assaults with IFV can be very powerful, but it's also very very easy to lose those 35 pt carriers. If your comfortable with them ~, but having a cheap carrier to send out infantry is very very very useful. 50 pts for your riflemen is a lot. You can have 2 1/2 squads of riflemen in the m113 for the cost of one bradley.
MAW/Eryx are both subpar, maw is short, eryx is guided and slow. Between the two I'd go eryx.
>Tanks
If it works for you more power to ya. Heavy/Med/Light isn't necessarily worse/better than Heavy/Light, it depends on how you play it.
>CEV
Sort of a ghetto mortar, you bring it up to a treeline and let it shoot. It'll do far more damage than a mortar, while also being very accurate. If you get into a stalemate between treelines/city area bring one out and send off a few rounds, shits the tits. Hell it can back up armored pushes very very well since it'll fuck up tanks and has enough range to not be the front line.
>>124975437
>no M8
>>124979112
Oh, also
>Aardvarks
They are decent bombers, decent all around stats. The bomb path is a long line last time I used it as opposed to the more circular/shotgun like bomb pattern of the su-24m/intruder. Better at killing moving stuff, but exposes the bomber longer (again this was awhile ago so pattern may be different, I haven't used them in a long time) but looking at the ACC stat on aardvark and intruder I'm guessing it's still the same. They're fine bombers.
Like I said earlier, the phantoms are very good tho. I believe they have the largest napalm load in the game. It won't necessarily kill everything outright, but anything in the center will get panic locked and burned to death. Also acts as a smoke field blocking LoS, and denies valuable pathways in the opener.
Also consider nighthawk, them 20 HE guided bombs are delicious.
Try them all out, find the one you like best, go with that. You won't be disappointed by the strike eagle. Very durable, excellent bomb load, doubles as a fighter in a pinch.
If you find space in a future deck to get 5 cards of planes, I would definitely get an ATGM plane. F-18C and a-10 both viable in their own ways. A-10 has brrrrrrrrrrrnnt.

Fuck you for suggesting someone to use the Aardvark. One of the worst planes in the game.
F-15D is pretty much the only viable iron bomber on the US.
>>124979112
USA has a ton of air cards, but really only one viable lineup.
F-16 Block52 + F-15D + Raven/Prowler + F-18C/Elite Harrier II. Prowler is generally greatly favored over Raven due to resistance to bad rolls and 2 means you reload faster than once every 5 minutes.
If you have the AP for a 5th slot (which I don't recommend), nab a nighthawk or Intruder.
Progress on map 4. Once it's done, I'll insert the .fp9 values, then the map pack will be completed. After that, I can work on scenarios, playtesting the scenarios, tying them into a campaign, playtesting the campaign, and then finally releasing everything on the official site.

>>124959463
Never not take PUFF, it is tied with F-16 block 52 for best SEAD.
It's the only SEAD that costs less than the things it kills, so suiciding PUFF's into Tunguska-M/BUK-M is a positive trade. You get 3 of them so if the enemy brought upvet Buk-M, you can actually kill all 3 even if you trade PUFF's 1 for 1.
Scandi tank line is excellent. Leopard 1A5 is fantastic, kills redfor tanks up to 70 points easily. Leopard 1A5NO2 is similar.
The STRV 103 line is amazing for fire support and push-stalling. They are the only tank with size "small", which slaps a 10% accuracy penalty on everything shooting at it. Combined with the crap accuracy of most redfor tanks, it will last a long time under fire.
STRV 121 is average for 160 points except for Leclerc. It will trade evenly with M1A1 HC, T-80U, and Twardy. It trades better than those tanks against T-90/72BU because better AP.
I think the Scandi air tab is tied for best with the USSR, ahead of EC and US.
You are spoiled with good ASF choices, F-16 Block 15 at elite is excellent. If that's not your thing, bring F-16AM.
MLU is the best multi-role in the game hands down. 40% ECM, 2 per card, good ATGM and AMRAAMS. Send these things right behind your ASF and watch the magic.
Puff is already explained
Then you have some choices.
AJS-37 Cluster bomber has 10AP, so it one shots soft skins and 2-shots 2AV, and 3 shots everything else.
SK-60B is cheap LGB. You can either plink soft skin vehicles and Infantry for certain, or send them in a pain train to kill a superheavy, 3 SK-60B will kill everything in the game, 2 will do for T-80UM.
Norwegian F-16A, good iron bomber unit. 2 1000 pound bombs and fair ECM.
After the nerf to Panzergrenadiers, Scandi has probably the best infantry tab in bluefor. Stormer in NM135 are broken. ERYX is great. FSK and Fallskjermjeger are amazing. Recon tab Jagere is amazing.

I need help. I want to get a HOTAS, specifically the X52. I have an Intel Z97 motherboard, why is that important you ask? Well, since HOTAS seem to hate USB 3.0 you have to use 2.0 from what I understand. I have only two 2.0 ports, no big deal, right? Use those! Well, I have reports that even sometimes the 2.0 ports on Z97 mobos don't work.
What I am to do? Get a USB 2.0 hub? Do you guys know any that have good power so the HOTAS wouldn't get disconnected?
>>125003289
It's the other way around. At least, for the X55. Ya need a powered USB port, and even then, probably a powered hub or you'll get ghost inputs. This seems to be decidedly a Saitek problem, though.

It's okay actually
>>125003547

>>125003916
Does the warthog work fine on 3.0? Why are you changing them around all the time?
>>125003890
Asus Maximus IV Extreme.
It basically only does USB3.0. I've got a USB2.0 hub hooked up to it and the sticks work just fine out of those two slots, too. Lights can be changed to red/amber and will "stick" which doesn't seem to happen through 3.0 for some reason, maybe just because I've unplugged them and haven't changed them back.
Otherwise they work perfectly through both USB2.0 and 3.0.

>>125004090
I feel you, anon. The "divider" between USB2.0 ports on the face of my case broke off and fell out within 6 months of having built my rig, that's what made me put the 2.0 hub in. Still have 3.0 ports on the face that can be used at least.
Coolermaster is really bad at USB ports.

I would say take one card of Livgarden '85 they are a cheap cost effective unit that you get alot per a card I find.
I would take FSK over the Kustjagre, they have a much better AT weapon or if you are going to take the Kustjagre for the increased number take the 90 version they are the same cost and have better equipment.
Support looks good I think.
Tanks look fine to me
Recon
I would say trade the AS350 for the cayuse, the Cayuse has less hp and speed, but your recon should not be getting shot and that ten points isnt worth the marginal hp and speed increase in my opinion.
I would trade the Jagere for the marinejagere, two man teams are harder to spot, and the sniper rifle can be punishing when used properly.
panserbil is just bad, recon is very dependent on seeing the enemy first and not getting seen, I would swap it for epbv 90 or nm116, If you want a cheap scout grab a jeep.
Vehicle
Personally I wouldn't take the IKV
And upgrade that PVTP to a tow2, it is worth the few extra points for the extra range and accuracy.
Helo looks fine
Plane
Personally I would drop the SK 60B for the Draken, Draken has scary bombs, and has some ECM, personally I don't run planes without at least some ECM I find they are a waste of points.

DCS is pretty chill, the guys in the ts in the op are nice enough. We haven't done much recently though since that peroid where everyone's hardware broke.

>panserbil is just bad
are you fucking retarded
the panserbil is a ridiculously effective combat unit

and ED done broke the game as well

Thanks.
>I would say take one card of Livgarden '85 they are a cheap cost effective unit that you get alot per a card I find.
They come in worse transports though, they only get a marginally better AT.
>I would take FSK over the Kustjagre, they have a much better AT weapon or if you are going to take the Kustjagre for the increased number take the 90 version they are the same cost and have better equipment.
The Kustjägare are for infantry busting due to 80% accuracy rifle. When they promote to Elite (very quickly) they hit pretty much every roll. The AT and MG can be ignored. The '90 variant have worse rifles.
would have taken FSK if I had more slots, but I think Pansarskytte '90 will have more use, since high RoF and pretty effective AT and fast transports.
>I would say trade the AS350 for the cayuse, the Cayuse has less hp and speed, but your recon should not be getting shot and that ten points isnt worth the marginal hp and speed increase in my opinion.
Yeah, probably a good idea. When playing as USSR I've found that fast helos have been useful for running out of engagement zones but that was the Mi-8.
>I would trade the Jagere for the marinejagere, two man teams are harder to spot, and the sniper rifle can be punishing when used properly.
I've had bad luck with sniper teams. They're stealthy but they tend to die to random fire, maybe I position them badly. In either case the Jaegere are more meant for combat recon.
>panserbil is just bad, recon is very dependent on seeing the enemy first and not getting seen, I would swap it for epbv 90 or nm116, If you want a cheap scout grab a jeep.
Panserbil was meant for fast firerate stunning really, but I think I'll try it out to see how effective it actually is. I did read it was nerfed though.
>And upgrade that PVTP to a tow2, it is worth the few extra points for the extra range and accuracy.
35 points is below the pain limit of a sacrificial ambush unit for me, I tend to use TOW-2's in LAVs.
How uncomfortable is to play DCS with a TM16000K and no headtracking?
>>125018346
>Effective combat unit
>Recon tab
I select my recon units for their ability to spot things, not for their ability to kill things.
If I wanted an effective fighting vehicle I would go to a different tab.
Also prefaced that with I don't normaly play scandi, and looking at it's stat line it is not a good scout because it is medium size, lightly armored, and has good optics.
>>125018680
You can get by with a crappy stick, ground attackers and the F-15 are pretty flyable with no head tracking. I'd prioritise getting yourself a delanclip or similar over a better stick at first.

>The Kustjägare are for infantry busting
Fair enough, I find that usually my infantry have harder time cracking tanks then other infantry, but that is really more of a case of personal preference.
>I've had bad luck with sniper teams.
Yeah I would chock that up to personal preference as well, I wish my mech Landjut army got sniper teams myself.
>Panserbil was meant for fast firerate
Well as a combat support Recon it might work, I try to avoid putting my recon in combat situations because I have had them get targeted to remove their spotting.
>35 points is below the pain limit of a sacrificial ambush unit for me
Fair enough, if you don't want to spend the extra ten points the PVTP is a good alternative to the base TOW
>>125018743
>doesn't use recon bradleys for combat
>doesn't use GRU for combat
>>125018743
it's like you're stuck in 2014.
You never want recon vehicles for optics, that's what shock recon is for.
>>125019105
I seriously thought about that but I'm kind of shit when it comes to soldering. On one hand, I fixed my 360 wired controller. On the other hand I managed to fuck the solderer's tip while building one of those DIY trackers.
>>125019256
Honestly, I'm not sure I could play DCS with no tracking. I don't mean that in a pretentious way, it just makes so much difference.
>>125019256
Also I'm not using the one I built not because it doesn't work but because the cardboard I used was awful, it wobbles a lot.
>>125019718
I know that there's a world of difference between having headtracking and not having it - I played IL-2 with facetracknoir, it was great but I had to reset its status pretty often as it lost tracking all the time (and it doesn't work if you wear glasses).

works great in total destruction, though

this posted has never experienced the joy 2 strv 103d sneaking up on, well, anything.
in equal points, and at 1800 range or less, 2 strv 103d will shit on any other tanks for the same price or less. superheavies ain't so super against 17ap 30rpm.

i really like fleet command, its def a little older, but that makes it cheap, and i really had a great time playing it. its actually oddly suspensful. and its probably 5% of the price of command modern air/naval
>>124979000
Oh hey, that was me. I had no idea dude had that stuff sitting back there. No wonder we just kinda sat there while they fed us every air unit they had.
