Not in the slightest. They hand out mechbays and premium time like candy during events and you can also earn them by ranking up in Community Warfare. If you play well, you'll earn enough XP and C-Bills to outfit the mechs you have and since you won't have that many if you're starting out, most of the trail mechs are passable builds at this point and any XP you earn using them carries over. If you play around, find a mech that works for you and stick to it, you will never have a reason to spend any money. Even the new mechs will eventually be available for C-Bills if you're patient. I have never felt this game is P2W. I can kill every mech on the battlefield just the same with my very first Hunchback-4P that I bought with my cadet bonus as I can with the Misery I payed money for. You can even save up the MC you get from events and get colors and One-Shot patterns for free. This game is in no way pay to win.

I just started playing MWO after stopping in closed beta and it's pretty great, so far the only f2p vehicle simcade that's not garbage and shallow.
I've spent my cadet credits on getting a raven, adder and a gauss hunchback, all built towards long range poking.
I'm usually trying to stick behind atleast 1 layer of teammates and spread out only to harass any flankers or loners. I am usually one of the last to die and when I die earlier it's due to some extremely stupid mistake thanks to lack of situational awareness.
Are there some general tips you guys can offer? Are extra mechbays behind a paywall?

It's also completely helpless up close because you need 10 seconds to cool from one alpha.

The EBJ and that meta build are predominantly sniping builds, or close to, you gotta remember. At 500m you are at basically the best your MLs can do these days, but beyond that you can fire the 2LPL for literally ever, which is also the key to watching your heat efficiency if you find yourself in a tight spot.
Rely on the LPL to keep knocking people down 20~ points of armour at a time at past 700m until they get close. Once in 550m or so you can start adding in mediums. Only get a full alpha off if you can do it without exposing yourself too much, which is rare once CW gets into any entrenched fighting, otherwise stick to 2LPL + 2ML. Always make sure you're positioned properly to the rest of your team too. You don't ever want to stand out, but you also want a better angle on where the enemy's coming/is than them too. Positioning is everything to doing well in this game. People shouldn't be able to run up on you because a team is there, likewise, people shouldn't already be prepared to shoot you where you are to make the long burn (which isn't very long on LPLs for damage dealt) a thing. EBJs/Clan Heavies have incredible mobility, gotta use that. Not only does it mean you peek very well in the first place but it means you're able to reposition quickly too. Relocate when compromised, keep hidden in a sea of targets, and just keep piling on the damage. There's a reason I run it symmetrically and with no high hardpoints, and it's to give me the most options to use as cover. Left side, right side, directly over a hill - EBJ can do all of those very well, so there's almost always tons of usable cover and with your mobility there's little excuse to take damage you don't want to. Nothing necessitates you fire a full laser at a target for instance, and the EBJ's arms shield damn well when you're side peeking or just relocating through bits of open cover.

But 2 LPL basically does jack shit and if you are 400m for your MLs you get raped by 6x LL or 3x LPL boats.
You basically have to expose your entire mech to fire the arm mounted lasers and in CW the IS side can just sit around a corner and force you to shoot much closer than 400m. Hellebore springs is a great example of how you are not getting 400+m shots unless the IS are dumb.

so im in the process of eliting my stormcrows. Im basically using 2lpl 2 er med on them all (i just move the pods and equipment around)
One of the variants i got was the D, because i just love dick, but also because i thought something artimis capable might be good to have.
Reading around the internet ive seen two interesting builds:
streaks
er small and srm
should i invest the money in getting these things now, or just save it and keep using what i am, which seems pretty successful to me
keep in mind i still need to buy the third chasis, im currently farming exp on the test prime and my C and D. ill be able to insta-max all the elites probably by the time i can afford the prime.
Im only thinking about it because different builds might break up the monotony, but if its less powerful than ill just grind it out with what im doing
