Some folks (myself included) really don't like the click-and-drag and discrete boxes of inventory space that make management much more annoying than in an ascii roguelike, but that's a UX quibble not an anti-roguelike one

yeah that looks like a fine thing to start with. You're going to have some trouble with devices (in this game every device besides potions has some % chance to fail based on your device skill, which in turn is based on int/race/class/personality/some items), so the higher tier devices are going to be forever out of reach and you might sometimes fail to read ?Teleport multiple times in a row which can be deadly.
You should remake with the same build and tell the auto-roller to seek roll-sets that give you at least base 16 in strength and dexterity, and at least 10 base charisma (for the protection against fear) and possibly int. If you input overly-greedy autoroller values it will discard all so just do like 16 16 12 10 10 or something.

To enjoy it you need to play on max difficulty, with "No time to grind" enabled. Then, press the + key to speed up the ass-slow animations. Maybe game music after a while, depending on your tolerance. With these things added it becomes a decently fun base experience.
The inventory management is incredibly tedious - and the crafting system together with it. I absolutely cannot play any crafting character. And even then, every character can and should do some crafting anyway - there is no escape, at least for a compulsive min/maxer.
It's still a very easy game to win if you know what you're doing - there are a few trees that are absurdly strong. I'd compare it to a MiBe 3 rune in terms of difficulty.
I hear that there are some excellent mods for it that just about fixes game balance, though I have not tried them out for myself. Overall, the game's atmosphere and design is rather lovely - unfortunately, that is decidedly not the base for a quality roguelike. I am, however, rather excited for their next game. (Not a roguelike.)
Is going Jiyva on a stabber good? I don't know what god is good besides maybe dithmenos, ashenzari or makhleb.

Kiku will help you to deal with things you couldn't to stab - either by throwing zombies at them, dispelling them or hitting them with your stabbing tool that Kiku would gladly brand with pain.

Kiku is actually a pretty solid overall god if you can cast spells. You think 'Necromancy God, better worship him as a necromancer' but he guarantees you artifact spellbooks that will be mostly redundant for necromancers but definitely worth branching into for most characters.
Necromancy is really a support spell school, a really good one at that, as it gives you access to derived undead for pretty powerful summons, psuedo-channeling with sublimation of blood, healing with regeneration and vampiric draining, and one of the best attack spells for midgame, bolt of draining (though it falls off HARD in extended and against some late game enemies).
His capstone power is a choice between pain branding a weapon to deal extra negative energy damage based on your necromancy skill, which will shred anything without rN and most of a 3-rune game, or the Necronomicon. Necronomicon gives you Necromutation and Death's Door, two of the most insanely strong spells for extended.
He's a perfectly reasonable god for both necromantic dabblers and those who seek the knowledge of life and death.

Even with Dithmenos and Invis, stabbing stops being able to solve all the problems eventually. My favorite SpEn picked up spells like Summon Mana Viper, Summon Forest, and eventually Controlled Blink and Malign Gateway for mid-late game, and ended up transitioning into Dischord / Singularity(rip) with Malign Gateway to turn hoards of enemies into chaotic implosions of death.
Had so much fun trying it out in a Zig I forgot how deep I was getting. Rest in peace you beautiful bastard.

Yup. You really need to triple cover rBase again. Not sure on the logic behind that change. My 500 HP at XL 42 is shaking in his boots at the thought of a GBW instagibbing him through single pip acid resistance. I think Great Ice/Hell/Storm all breathe for their respective caps; Great Bile only breathes for 1333 when at full HP.

I think of Poseidon as more of a melee type character, you're going to be blasting with wands and preserving does cost mana so it could come up. The others are all better though.

No, wait, I was thinking of Shrewd. Shrewd is very bad. Nimble has a lower life rating modifier, but good skills, so it's pretty good.
Most important thing personalities give is skill bonuses, and the Lucky bonus. Nimble, fearless, lucky, hasty (for hack n slash characters usually), combat, and sexy are all good. Lucky is the best non-munchkin personality since it gives you great skill boosts and a drop bonus.

It depends on what you're wielding still. For a QB, elec or pain. If you're going for 3 runes, elec/pain/vamp. If you're investing you weapon skill higher than what is required for min delay, something like vorpal/freezing/fire may do more damage than elec. Otherwise, holy.

This is the only answer to "what weapon should I use in DCSS."
You dump your character.
You load it up in wizmode.
You import the dump's stats.
You spawn the weapons you have access to.
You fsim against several targets.
You account for the additional effects of AM and Vamp if at all.
Then you use the one which does the most damage.
Theoreticals in Crawl are retarded. The only way you can learn weapon choice is either by experience or fsimming since your characters stats will always influence the damage. Asking for advice on which weapon or brand to use is idiotic without a full dump and even then the only way to give an accurate answer would be to fucking fsim it yourself..

Giant spiders are more suited to being female, given that female spiders are generally far more gluttonous, large and aggressive than their male counterparts.

There's thoughts that the damages have been rescaled, but looking at the damage caps for high element breaths, they all seem the same as before. Still, high breaths only cap at 800 tops, so 2 resists will put that down to 480. Base breaths (other than poison) cap at 1600, so with 3 pips, that's 448 and with 4 pips 400. It makes high res less good, certainly. I'm more worried about the spells which deal high damage. Logrus ball, darkness storm, and nether ball are more terrifying than ever.

Or you could pick the one with heavier base damage and just, like, play game because one of DCSS' specific design goals is that such intricate minmaxing shouldn't be necessary -- and it really isn't.
As long as you're skilling properly and playing with half decent tactics you don't need to resort to wizmode tests to win game.
Here's a good shorthand for weapon selection:
1) Is it a weapon for which your character has already trained skill?
2) Is its base damage + slaying higher than the weapon your character currently has equipped?
If yes to both, equip new thing and throw your old thing in lava.
Also maybe keep around one staff of air if you find it for an emergency rElec+ swap.
That's it. What I've just written is, frankly, more intricate than you even need to get to streak win DCSS.

Light and dark breath caps are both still 400. As long as you have +light and +++fire you should be okay. Honestly I think we should rewrite poscheng's late enemies completely if we want people actually winning the game. The way I see it the only way you can kill the serpent is if you can cast *healing* every single turn with +40 speed and wraithform active to keep yourself from dying between every cast.
That's terrible game design.
Also apparently the ladder says I'm a loser because I died after killing JJJ and haven't quitted. Fuck the ladder.
