It really isn't a bad game. The story is lacking for the present in it, but much backstory is covered through the tapes. I suppose you wouldn't necessarily have to play any of the other games to get the jist of the plot up until MGSV canonically, but that's just me.
I haven't played many new games in an open-world aspect. The last one I could say I have is GTAV, and there's comparisons between the two I've seen in here a few times.

Yeah. The most biting was "TPP's gameplay isn't as good as MGS2's and its open world isn't as good as GTA's".
TPP does have a plethora of charming minutia, but I am always dissapointed when I think about what it lost from even 2.

It was different, it's not Rockstar open-world tier, and the combat and flow can get clunky at times. The only time it really all goes nice and smooth is when you're sneaking, and I suppose that's the point, considering MGS was initially tactical.
You're not exactly thinking MGS when you first start playing through it. It's appealing via sights and sounds, but it's extremely different from the rest of the series.

I'm pretty sure MGSV was entirely designed with sort of roleplaying in mind, what with avatar creation being there, no actual solid story in freeroam (and using a 'plot hole' from original Metal Gears to justify it) and this way the game has minimal obstructions towards making up your own story and whatnot, be it self-insertion or just something else

Don't worry about stirring shit up on nuke raids. The owner gets the invite to defend the second you deploy even before you run up the stairs. Just use Battle Dress and shoot as much shit as you want because they get notified no matter what.
