I've had the same thing with Sgt Hammer and Abathur.
I just started learning the game again from the ground up since watching my MMR tank from 3.4k all the way to 2.9k was a wake up call. Been using Sylv, Rehgar, Malf, Arthas, Sitches Muradin and Anub a lot recently. It seems Sylv is the only non caster damage dealer I know how to use.

I enjoy all of them, I often find ways to make my own fun, but learning proper decision making with Sylv(who I find the most fun) is annoying because you are either in the right or the absolute wrong and you should kill yourself. Positioning is on point, landing silence ults on cores is on point but most of the time, people complain when im not taking camps because im getting rid of a huge wave with siege minions but they complain when im taking a camp when there is nothing else on the map because I could be in lane pushing or soaking XP
But yeah, I enjoy playing them and they allowed me to get back into the game especially now that they changed up Sylv's talent tree so that it's not solely about 1 talent at that level that you have to get all the time, especially at level 7. Her and Sitch are the thing that got me back into HotS.

That's Hammer in a nutshell.
Strong situational awareness is important with her. She's not a hero who can handle surprises well.
Something to get the hang of: Going siege mode isn't always the right plan. Hammer does plenty decent damage rolling about and can keep mobile to avoid heavy AOE.
Go seige if you think you can avoid being blown away for a bit but don't try it if you think you'll need to brawl any time soon.
Also: Hammer is surprisingly good at finishing off running foes due to having a really long speed boost compared to most people's escape moves. Zoom up behind them and blast them in the ass (Or face if you can get ahead of them) with your shotgun round.
Finally: For the love of all that's holy, don't forget your mines. You can have 2 loads of them out at once. Having those in the bushes with you will give melee assassins a nasty surprise when they go after you. They also give a little LOS so you can use them to scout out bushes without going in personally. A little head start never hurt hammer when it's time to pissbolt.

playing hammer requires some knowledge of player psychology. that little ring on the ground will affect the enemy team without you ever firing a shot. Use it to zone the enemy team out, if you ever lose a lane as hammer you're doing it fucking wrong.
If you get caught in siege mode hit em with the shotgun then boost off, and lay some mines behind you (remember you dont have to stop to use the mines).Don't ever siege in a location where you won't have some kind of escape route. Remember that boost can be activated while in siege, which will get you moving faster than de-sieging and then boosting.
If you get a map that requires holding an objective (sky temple, cursed hollow, dragon shire) congrats, you basically win the game.
Always pick napalm. You can clear huge waves and take merc camps with it.
She's one of my favorites, I have an 85% winrate with her.

Luckily, I've only played 1 game with Cho'Gall, the rest were in AI games. We won the game but the Cho'Gall was dead weight and constantly complained, so we just used him as cannon fodder.
I've heard a lot of stories of people playing QM and having a total hot ass Cho'gall on their team. I'm just thankful it doesn't happen to me.Whoops, there I go jinxing myself again!

The one time I've seen Cho'Gal be terrifying was on the Dragon Knight map.
I wasn't aware that Gal could keep casting while Cho is piloting the Dragon Knight. So you end up with a Dragon Knight + Cho's spells...then a full health Cho'Gal to fight when it dies.

Yeah, I pick SEF most of the time, but barrel can be better against high stun comps with high-value immobile squishies like Kael. Look to barrel the squishies into your team if you take it.
In general, learn to use BB well. WE costs exactly 50 brew, so you can always press it if you need the speed boost. You can use this if you see a gank coming with not enough time to mount, etc. Don't drink if you don't need the resources or don't need to tank damage. Keep the speed boost from BB for as long as possible while chasing.

In the early levels, if the person is just running straight away from you without stopping, you can't really chase them forever. In that case, you generally want to kick>WE to initiate, and then just run alongside them autoing with BB and kicking when it's off cooldown to keep up, or keg smashing to slow them (without using fire breath) if you have teammates chasing. If they stop (or get stopped) for any reason, then you can take time to drink and fill up on brew before they start running again.
Once you have pressure point, though, you can chase forever. Here's how it should go:
1: Kick>WE
2:chase and auto with BB
3: Kick>drink while they're rooted>WE
4: go to step 2
