With HE shells, just target wherever. With AP shells, try to hit their sides at a 90 degree angle and aim for the areas under turrets and smokestacks near the waterline. Those will net you citadel penetrations that do massive damage. Though destroyers don't have citadels, so always HE them. And obviously that means you should try your best to never fully expose your own citadel. A typical strategy is to angle in a way that you can sway your ass and bring all guns to bear to fire then tuck it back in to hide while you're reloading.

What this anon forgot to mention, is that by following this strategy, you will either be closing on the enemy, or retreating from him. This will either draw you closer, and make you easier to hit (at the same time as pulling away from your backup, if theyve decided not to help you), or draw you away, and limit the time you have to shoot at your target, especially if your reload is slow.

In order to change course, you will have to broadside at some point - so time your enemies reloads, so they coincide with his optimum chance at hitting your citadel.

Or use cover when changing course.

In all cases, vary your speed, keep an eye on your allies, and constantly be aware of any terrain to use to your advantage

And graphics can of course be improved upon (HD texture packs such as the ones in tank games(WT,WoT,AW))

The base game for SO has crappy graphics but meatier content.
It can improve its graphics to look like WoWs.
WoWs on the other hand has much more dumbed down reliable gameplay thats easier to get into while looking much prettier.

The ships also feel much better.
Granted controls can be improved and physics can be added to SO, the question is will the chinks do it. The graphics aren't the issue as much as the controls and feel of the game, and those are the points really holding SO back.

Nah fuck off. The only thing that seems kind of wonky in SO is momentum and that's because wows makes everything weight a million tons to make up for their teeny tiny baby toy ships.

Well that's the problem.
SO is a much faster game. With games rarely lasting beyond 10 minutes.
If you overall decrease the speed botes go, this just makes it easier for CVs to dominate and slows down the game entirely.

Coupled with the spotting ranges in SO, if every bote was slow then they would have to rework every single spotting mechanic in game ontop of reworking the maps.

Also on top of all this, the scale much different compared to WoWs, so it throws off many people. Coupled with to scale ship sizes will throw you for a loop. You then realize that some ships are really slow in comparison when your BB for example gets outplayed by a DD in CQC.
At higher tiers the game slows down a bit because you have to think about your actions but its not all complete run and gun. You die quickly that way.

Again, Steel Ocean is a faster paced game. Ships are slower to respond based on their size. With DDs and subs being the most responsive. You learn the differences when you play them in game.
CVs and BBs handle like cement trucks compared to cruisers which handle like pick up trucks.
DDs are motorcross bikes and subs are 4 wheelers.

You learn this when you play the game and get used to it.
Yeah I want my botes to have slower start and stop times so it makes my life as a CV captain easier.
At the same time it would just make CVs in SO even stronger.

In WoWs, is there any reason at all to take the shitty aircraft setups on the Indy? I feel like strike loadout, like on the Bogue is retarded like what carrier sends out attack groups with no fighter cover? It's stupid as hell. I think the last time it was tried was a ton of B-52s and people buying into the hype thinking they didn't need escort, then something like 10% of them made it back.

So strike is worthless because it's so easy to get completely shut down by fighters. Then Anti Air loadout is too much escort for weak attackers being 1 bomber group. You're not capable of helping your team even if your clear the sky.

So I always take balanced group which Bogue didn't really have.

Am I doing this right? Am I missing something?

Compared to WoWs, the gameplay on SO falls behind spectacularly. For example, the speed of the boats in the two games is more or less the same, however, the size of the maps are very different, which leads to it being more of a speed game rather than a strategy game like it should be. Until the Mutsuki, ijn DDs play pretty similarly, get the situation awareness Captain skill and find out generally at what range you might get detected, generally 6km in your case, your torps have 7, try to abuse that.

Tiers 3-5 are the golden period for japanese DD's. Shit becomes painful at 6.

Target battleships, only try to torp cruisers if there are no battleships in range. Try to torp from outside detection range so you don't clue anyone in that you're there. This is the big point. Any cruiser or battleship with half a brain automatically goes full stop and hard rudder the instant a DD is spotted.

Torpedoes are basically retard removal, and Japanese destroyer playstyle is completely different to every other ship.

as you get higher in tiers you get worse while the enemy gets better.

most of your torpedoes will be in the 7-9 max range with 50-68kts. The best torpedoes in the game only have 67kts with a range of 20km, but your enemy has 11.28 seconds to react.

at 2.10km.

11.28 seconds to impact at 2.10km. If they move even slightly to the left or right or slightly slow down before that, they won't come close.

You can still have fun in jap DD's as long as you play your own game and stop caring about your winrate. Even when you torp 5 battleships and deal more damage than the rest of your team combined you cannot carry them when it really matters and shitters will steal carry you into losses through no fault of your own.

I've one-shot destroyers in my myoko with a full salvo. The Furutaka has a bit of a learning curve but the Aoba kind of feels like a middle point between light and heavy.

Dont get me wrong, they're all great (maybe except the taco) and I've had some of my best games in the Aoba.
The american cruisers at tier 4 - 6 are great CL's, cant talk about later tiers because I have no experience with them.

The german tier 4 sucks donkeyballs, but after that you get a 16.5 km range with a reload around 6 seconds. Shame that their HE shells suck for some reason.

I like it when the ship is responsive aka good maneuverability and turret turning. I figure if I used the Furutaka and above I wouldn't be able to efficiently use the turret traverse Captain skill. Hence why I was thinking of the Nazi cruisers since they have fucktons of spammy under 15cm turrets.

The only problem I see with higher tier IJN DDs is the hidden stat that lets torps be detected from farther away. But even then, if a BB see's them coming, I can still land 2+ on one using my Fubuki if I lead them properly.

Exactly, Shimakaze is a 41kn ship with 3x5 fast long range high alpha torps.
All tier6-9 IJN DDs have less, slower, lower range torps and since mid/high tier torpedo boats playstyle is based on luck mostly Shimakaze has more chance to do something than a top tier Hastu, Kagero and Fubuki

It looks disappointing so far. Looks and feels more like a Tales-of-X game than Valkyria chronicles. I mean, it might sell more if it tries to be more like any other run-of-the-mill JRPG, but it sure as hell lost my interest in the franchise.

A shame, since it's one of the best recent entirely-new franchises. It was truly painful to see it being underused, mishandled and mismanaged.

6.6km detect with 6km torpedoes.. so that you get a taste of what it was like to play american DD's... except your guns traverse is so slow it'd make some BB's grimace. You have 1 AA now apparently with two guns that have .9km range to AA-meme those planes that almost crash into you! (CBT wasn't that low)

Once she gets her 10km torpedoes/2nd-hull she isn't that bad as long as nothing major has changed since CBT.

Now based on CBT, normally I would say get the -Detonation chance module, and +AA damage/range and become an AA boat in your spare time in that window of experience between between hull 2, and not-shit-torps.(Which is now fucking 4k?!)

However: CV's seem to be more rare (And XP gains lowered, costs raised.) so perhaps ^ doesn't work anymore? I am not quite to my own Mut's 2nd hull to properly test.

m8, it takes a full minute for the torpedoes to hit at max range. It's virtually impossible that someone won't have turned in that time.

the point is the 10km torps have the option to kill people from outside your detection range..

I hated the 7km's on minekaze (Compared to 10km CBT) because I couldn't provide the same area denial/support, or attack targets moving away from me without getting dangerously close to being seen. I played like a spotter who happened to have high powered relatively inaccurate nukes. I was there to shepherd the enemy into traps, force broadsides to be exposed, keep the enemy lit for my allies to murder them, AND occasionally get a hit (With Minekaze having 3 sets, steering the enemy fleet wasn't too difficult, Mut with two.. is very tricky.)

The Mutsuki with 6km torps means you have been seen for .6km if they are traveling side-ways, have to be closer than 5km(speculating, could be higher/lower) to hit if they are running from you, and can only fire 'safely' if they are heading right towards you (which leaves a tiny ship profile to attempt to torp/aim-at)

10km's mean you have wiggle room without being nuked. (Also minekaze and mutsuki in CBT had 5.8km detect, so the Mut was at least invisible for .2km of your torp range.)

Basically if the xp gain mechanics from Steel Ocean, or World of Tanks were in WoWS, IJN DD would have a much easier time.
(Light up targets for the entire match with little to fear from anything except other Minekaze/Muts/Iso's.. or planes, which are/were easier to dodge than people think.)

Looks more like your team might have just attempted to zerg, and just effectively 'funneled' to their deaths one or two at a time. (or, the enemy advanced and created an effective wall. 'camping' your spawn.)

Myoko's strength is in her AA and torps. Her guns are, as you pointed out, actually worse than Aoba, because #3 turret is utterly useless and her reload is actually slower. Aoba is a more fun ship to play offensively, but Myoko really needs a BB to escort IMO. Her AA is - astonishingly - even better than her American counterpart at the same tier.

I'm on Myoko now and I agree with you on most all counts. All she can really do is protect bigger ships from air units and HE spam BBs if you correctly time broadsides with enemy reloads. In a straight gunnery duel with basically any other cruiser, she's SOL.

For also those reasons I also rebought Aoba for fun / matchmaking, just because her performance is so consistent

Myoko can actually put a lot of shells on target, you just have to turn away from the enemy, so that your retardedly placed #3 turret can work.
Get the rudder shift time upgrade, and keep waggling your ass, you can actually zig-zag between salvos.

As you say, the best place to be is supporting a BB.
But do not underestimate your gun power, you just have to be careful about it.

What are the best mods for Myoko? I'm thinking Main Battery mod 1, AA Guns mod 2, Propulsion mod 1, and obviously Steering Gears mod 2. Is that about right?

Well, here's my captain skills for the guy I've been using since Furutaka:

>the turret rotation skill
>the tier 3 damage control skill (gained before the AA barrage became a limited consumable)
>the 20% range on AA and guns under 155mm skill

Looking back, I'm thinking that the tier 3 superintendent skill might have been a better choice, but I'm not sure if I want to go beyond Mogami or not. I plan to get the tier 5 visibility decrease skill next, I've got two points left to gain.

15 wins in a week for 3 commanders.
100g and a day of premium for signing in two days in a row.
Sign in 20 days in a month and get a pretty good commander (rotates each month.)
